Sidewalk snacks like crazy good pregos served with crispy fries to mop up the goodness and beef trinchado. They accept cash only. (EO mag 2014)

Signature dishes at this busy and popular neighbourhood eatery include succulent Falklands calamari, their famous Prego rolls, and trinchado beef. Equally worth ordering are their gourmet pizzas with thin and crispy bases, salads, sandwiches and pastas. The Cypriot breakfast, heavy on halloumi, is also a favourite. It’s the place to people-watch, but also an establishment where everybody knows your name if you are a regular patron. Take note that it’s a cash-only venue.

    Wine
An extensive wine list with many well-priced options.

    Service
The team functions like a well-oiled machine.

    Ambience
The place is generally packed and heaving with people. There is both indoor and pavement seating.

    And...
Their peri peri sauce, which comes liberally sprinkled on their signature dishes, is clearly a secret weapon! (JW, October 2011)

  • I can't say that I've ever had a bad experience at Espresso. The vibe is great, the food is great and if you can't get a table right awat the bar is really awesome and vibey and having a cocktail while you wait is alright. The Espresso pizza is my absolute FAV! The calamari in the pergo sauce with bacon is GENIUS! I try not every time I go there but it's so hard cos it so darn good. I have had the prego before and that is also amazing. *Some say this is the best prego in JHB but I beg you to try Riverside Cafe in Bryanston too and then decide. I voted for RIverside but it's VERY CLOSE.

  • This place is overpriced, serves average food, and has high ambient noise. There are much better places in the immediate vicinity...

  • Whenever I can't think of any restaurant to visit, this is always my go to restaurant. When I'm not feeling, nor looking for a fine dining experience, however, looking for good food and a relaxed atmosphere with beautiful people, this is my go to restaurants. It is generally packed to capacity, but definitely worth the wait. Sunday is a great day to be sitting outside, watching people walk by, and enjoying the food. My absolute favourite is their signature pizza, espresso pizza. It is nothing authentically Italian, however, the restaurant makes no claim about being authentically anything but perhaps a place to eat good food, have a relaxed enjoyable experience in whatever attire you choose. That's what I believe at least. Definitely my go to restaurant time and again.

  • I really have never had a bad experience at Espresso. It is my number one choice for Sunday lunch. The street vibe in Parkhurst is wonderful. I enjoy every minute of it.

  • Not very impressed for a first time visit to a place that is supposedly a breakfast institution. First impressions after sitting down were not good - the menus are old and looking very tatty, with peeling corners and all a bit grubby. The cafe itself looks as if it could do with a thorough spring clean and lick of paint. Food was very average. We ordered smoked salmon on a croissant with avo and cream cheese. No cream cheese was available, so we made do with chunky cottage cheese. Half the avo served was very hard and unripe, and the salmon was at best below average. Service was friendly but staff could do with clean, fresh uniforms. Value for money - not good. We probably wont be back.
