Critic's review

Best for after work-drinks. The menu includes the usual: fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas and nachos. Platters and jugs of
frozen margaritas are great for groups. Very raucous in summer.

  • Phenomenal little place, great vibe. The iceberg beer float is amazing- beer draught with a dollop of frozen lime margarita inside it. Yum. But I'd limit it to 2 or you may find yourself face down on A pavement. We had the nachos to share that were delicious a the quesadillas that were yummmmy. I'll go back if I'm around. The service was really great.

  • I regularly go to the Fat Cactus in Park Road as it is close to home and a popular (sometimes raucous) place.
The service has always been good and the manager is attentive.
Lately my experiences of the food have made me question my regular visits - the hard shell tacos have been stale on 2 occasions (the manager did offer their soft shell tacos instead), and the chilli poppers of late have a soggy batter - where's the crumbed crunch??
I really hope the improve on these before the summer and its balmy nights where I love to spend an evening sipping on their frozen margaritas and eating their food.

  • This was a great dining experience. My hubby and I love this place. Staff were well versed in all aspects of the menu and super friendly and the food was out of this world!

  • The original Fat Cactus opened 13 years ago in little Mowbray and is still serving the best Tex Mex, poppers and margaritas and then Park road followed suit - simply put - both shops kick ass in the burbs and the bowl - Viva Fat Cactus!

  • There are few things better than a lazy lunch with friends on a Saturday at Fat Cactus, with a jug of moggyritas (a mix of strawberry and lime margarita) to share. The dishes are cheesy and moreish and the meat, tender and delicious. We just keep going back for more.

  • I made a reservation for Saturday 13 August. On mine and my partners arrival it was halfway through the rugby match. When we walked in the manager pointed us to our table where someone was sitting, regardless of my name on the table. The manager said "there is your table, you can just tell that person to move" when we go to the table. I asked the man move. He moved up slightly. So it was the 3 of us at a table. Disgusted in the service we got up and proceeded to walk out. The waiter asked if we were going to a table outstide, we said no and that we were leaving because we were not willing to sit and with a random person at our table. His response was "okay". I am shocked in their lack of customer service.

  • The best place for a good margarita jug with friends after work on a Friday afternoon! Loving the World Cup inspired Bafanaritas! Awesome vibe and friendly staff. Definitely one of my favourite hang outs.

  • We have in the past stopped there after dragon-boat practice on a fairly regular basis and it was one of our favourite places to go. This time though it was a little different. The service was slow compared to our past experiences. I ordered the Gamba Gamba which, on the menu, merely states ‘grilled prawns with tomato cucumber and avo’. I presumed this to be plain- grilled prawns in a salad. Everybody else received their food long before I did and then the prawns were drenched in some kind of sauce (unknown) as well as finely crumbled nachos all over it! I am on a strict low-carb diet and therefore could not eat the salad at all! It would have been much better if the waiter had told me that the salad was different to the description on the menu. We took the meal as a take away for my fiancé to have the next day. He ended up throwing it away as the avo was still hard (not ripe at all) and he felt that the prawns were not very fresh. We go there regularly but now we will have to reconsider it before we go there again.

  • I like to call myself Fat Cactus number one fan, but if I was I would know about the 2 for the price of 1 Cuervo Special on Thursdays. Guess where Im going on thursday... And the amazing chilli poppers only make my choice that much easier.

  • Went to Fat Cactus in Gardens with a couple of my friends a few nights ago, as I do at least once a week. As a waitress, I am very particular about how and where I spend my money. But Fat Cactus never fails to impress. Despite the not-so-fantastic weather the place was packed inside and the vibe was great. We did not make a reservation but the manager on duty was very accomodating and seated us at the bar armed with one of of their famous margarita jugs. No more than ten minutes later we were seated at a very cosy table. Obviously the chilli poppers were outstanding, but instead of going for my usual nachos grande with Mexican chicken I tried the Calamares. Phenomenal. Service great, vibe awesome. This is why I will continue going back... at least once a week. Keep it up guys.

  • I love the Fat Cactus franchise, but I was *very* disappointed by the service on Friday night. Our food took more than an hour to arrive while people around us were being served. They also falsely advertised the price of the Mangorita jug on the black board, with illegible fine print saying it was only for happy hour - this was indicated with an HH which actually just looked like a mistake ... My experience in retail has taught me that if your conditions are illegible the customer is right. This really amounts to fraud when you think about it ... The portions were disappointing, the food lacklustre. A great vibe and location will do nothing for you if you dont get the basics right! Please fix this!

  • Ive always said that the Fat Cactus makes the best chilli poppers in town, and last night I was proven right yet again! Our waiter was very friendly and efficient, the fajitas were delicious and the Mangoritas made for a very festive Tuesday evening. All in all, a great night out!

  • Thank you for the constructive criticism! It seems that your experience was obviously not a positive one! Everything you have described is certainly not what we aspire to and conceptually hasn’t kept our original business alive for 12 years. Our sour cream should have no mayo at all in it. Our guacamole does have onion and tomato, lime and coriander. It is possible that we ran out and some was quickly made for you, in this case it is possible our recipe was not adhered to. Our nachos are sourced fresh, locally, from a company called Mexicorn (Anton 021 593333), and are unspiced, made from real masa harina and are gluten free. The dips that you describe are fresh salsa, fresh guacamole and a bean dip. Cumin is the main constituent of our spice blends as so Im sure it is in most curry powder blends. We would like to invite you to give us another chance. As we don’t have your contact details, please contact us so that we can get your feet tap dancing to our Mexi-fresh melody!Yours TrulyFats Cactusgardens@fatcactus.co.za021 4225022 (Celeste/Dimo)

  • This restaurant needs to look up the meaning of Mexican Cuisine! Instead of sour cream I was given this vile mayo concoction. The guacamole was bulked up with onion and tomato, not a hint of lime or coriander. Nachos was doritoss with 3 vile dips, one tasted of curry as if curry powder was used instead of cumin. Wont put my foot back there!
