Owner's description

Fat Harry's is the new kid on the block. Good honest food with a friendly atmosphere and ice cold beer.

From reading the previous review, and from our my experience last Saturday evening, it would appear that making a reservation at Fat Harry's is an exercise in utter futility. On arrival we were greeted by a waiter who could only shrug and tell us "sorry, we don't have a table, there might be space at the bar." This conversation had to be shouted over an unnecessarily loud band performing Beatles covers out of tune. The awful ambience and indifferent reception were not enough to persuade us to stay, and so I cannot comment on the food. Indeed, the only redeeming attribute I can assign to Fat Harry's is that it is conveniently close to Banana Jam, where our evening became considerably more successful.
Supper at Fat Harry's was an utter disppointment. Not only did it damper our special occasion but it also was a huge disappointment to a family member that had flown in from overseas. We had made a reservation but when we arrived there was no table available for us. On top of the bad start, we waited an hour for our food that arrived cold and the chicken was still bloody. Sending it back to the kitchen twice was to no avail as we still received raw food. The waitering staff was friendly but it should have been obvious we were walking into a disaster zone. Won't be back again and have warned all our friends not to visit.
Fantastic place. The food is amazing! Have never had such good pork belly and the burgers are to die for! The pattys are stuffed with whatever flavor you choose ie: jalepino burger has jalepinos stuffed in the actually meat, same with the Camembert burger, cheese oosing out the meat yum!!! Atmosphere is great and very good service
Wont be rushing back, My partner and myself went out on Tuesday evening and thought we would try Fat Harry's. On arrival we were not great ore seated after finding the waiter huddled at the kitchen pass and we were escorted to a high table right in front of the fire place. Music very loud but seemed to be adjusted later in the evening. Beautiful fireplace, ergonomics of the restaurant needs some attention two doors leading to the front porch, opened and closed continually allowing a cold drought to flow in. Good array of craft beers and an average wine list. Food a total let down, we both opted to try the burgers, myself the lamb burger. It was dreadfully dry, not nearly enough tzatziki or hummus if any of either, sweet potato wedges, clearly been deep fried not crispy. My partner chose the banting burger, burger patty, dry and flavourless. Salad over powered with red onion. None the less we decide to give their creme brulee a bash, what a disaster, clearly the cream had curdled the eggs leaving a bowlful of sweet scrambled eggs, horrid. To my dismay I politely inform the waitress and ask her to advise the manager, thinking he may come and apologies, to no avail. Food takes long so one would at least expect a decent meal....... Will not be rushing back.
We were a table of 9 and I don't see any of us returning. Avoid FH if you are vegetarian. We ordered the gnocchi and veg curry. The gnocchi arrived looking like a soup (the bowl was filled with a watery, creamy sauce, with stodgy gnocchi buried deep under the surface) and was not of a high standard. The veg curry was a pile of poorly cut vegetables (under and over-cooked) on a bed of rice. It lacked flavour and was definitely not worth R80; canteen food comes to mind. We also suffered the table next to the door on a very cold night. Either wear thermals or go elsewhere if seated there - the door swings open frequently and you get blasted by the cold. We had to close it a few times ourselves - not the end of the world, but poor planning by FH (they obviously know it's a problem, but do nothing about it). There was a fireplace on the other side of the restaurant - as an added bonus the flue didn't seem to be working properly, so we got little benefit from the fire but still left with clothing smelling of smoke. Service was OK, although we found an extra bottle of wine on our bill at the end of the night. It was removed, but didn't improve our poor impression of the place.
