Critic's review

Food
Vegetarians can savour the maa kidal – black lentils in a butter and cream-enriched sauce. The signature dish, Gateway to India raan (lamb marinated and partly cooked overnight in the clay oven before being finished in a gutsy onion gravy) deserves its status.

Wine
No budget beaters, but some unimaginative choices are balanced by good wines and two champagnes.

Service
Informative and helpful.

Ambience
Gracious proportions make this an elegant space – enormous carved stone lions preside over diners and segment the restaurant into eating bays, silk panels soften walls and a glassed-in tandoori oven piques interest.

And...
You pay for the experience – additionals like rice and speciality breads are pricey. (TG, September 2010)

User reviews

  • I would love to meet the owner of this restaurant as the service and the food is disgraceful. I ordered a lamb curry with potatoes and I get big peppers and onions and the toughest meat I have ever eaten! Not to mention the calibre of the waitron that delivered the food to us who literally argued with us upon delivering the food. I called to complain to the manager regarding this and the strange thing is that no one knows who the manager is cos I got a lady the first time who then handed my call very rudely to another gentleman! Talking about me whilst I was still on the phone. We work in gateway and have nothing but bad comments to customers about your service. The sad thing is that once pointed out to the so called manager, the service remains the same...very bad from a business perspective as you are loosing customers that could actually return cos we work around the corner from you and could add value to you.

  • Extremely expensive and poor quality. It is obvious that they spend all their money on the expensive rent and not the ingredients for their dishes. Not a good experience so avoid!

  • We ordered three curries for take away on the 22nd June,,
    Chicken tikka
    Chicken korma
    Gateway lamb
    Total price, R470
There was about 4 small pieces of average chicken in each and the lamb was so tough and full of fat.
Very disappointed. Definitely a rip off. At that quality and price I am surprised they still have a business.

  • We arrived 10mins prior to closing time, but were still treated like royalty. My first visit to Durban definitely became more memorable after enjoying the traditional, authentic Indian flavours of their (Very Hot!) Rogan Josh. Very clean restaurant, with no expense spared on decor and good quality staff, leading to an extremely pleasant experience. Will recommend to all of my friends, thank you!

  • Absolutely wonderful! Loved the connection between the name, Gate way to India and the interior. Felt as though we stepped from the boulevard into India. Beautiful decor; excellent service; outstanding food!
