Critic's review

Food
Ghazal offers authentic North Indian cuisine with sensational spice balance and a wide variety of curries. The meat and chicken pieces are always succulent and moist. A highlight is the prawn masala, which has a delicate, mild blend of spices that compliments the sweet prawns perfectly. It’s a must for prawn lovers.

Wine
The comprehensive wine list includes Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir and Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage.

Service
Attentive, knowledgeable and helpful.

Ambience
The Sunninghill franchise is spacious, clean and modern to maximise customer intake.

And...
Ghazal offers flavourful delicate curries and the best soft, puffed garlic naan in Jozi. (NM, October 2012)

  • WHAT A SHOCKER!!! I can deal with slow kitchen service. I can also deal with bland tasting food, the online reviews were mostly good so it might have been an off day. When you serve a vegetarian dish to my child with chicken in it, that's when I draw the line. To top it off, for management to shrug their shoulders without a glimmer of remorse shows me that this is an establishment that does not respect or appreciate their customers. Sorry Ghazal Sunninghill, you are not doing me a favour by serving me at your restaurant and your management staff are an embarrassment to the industry. My family and I will never ever be eating at your restaurant again.

  • I have become a regular here due to the great food and great value. It is the best Indian food available in Johannesburg and I know many who agree.

  • I ate here on a Wednesday and had the worst Indian meal ever. Poppadoms were stale (too moist, as if they had been left out), the mince samoosas were tasteless, onion bajia ok, korma terribly over-sweet, chicken bhuna dish had all the right looks but zero taste. Tandoori prawns were reasonable, but only because of the quality of the prawns, not how they were cooked. The only positive things I have to say are that the service was pleasant and the restaurant is nice and spacious. This may have been a post-new year glitch and I was looking forward to trying the food here, but I will not be back.

  • Lovely food. In fact the best ever. Really wanted to go back but the menu doesn't cater for kids. I sent numerous emails to ask if I could pay a for a full portion for my son, but bring something small for him while 6 adults ate. I got no response. When I called, they turned down 6 paying adults and the full portion I was prepared to pay for for my son in return for bringing in a small meal for him. Even if it was to decline my request, a response to my email would have been appreciated. That's 6 adults very disappointed that we cannot enjoy their food.

  • Expecting an Indian experience, we were met with Africana coupled with music of the same ilk. The complimentary sambals were also disappointing and we believed we were set up for a bad meal. If you are looking for an authentic Indian experience, this is not your spot. Having said that, the food was good - the Chicken Makhnie was incredibly tender and the sauce was good but not great in our experience. The Lamb Korma sauce delighted on many levels of flavour but the the dish could have been improved by serving on the bone.
