Food
With the harbour below, no surprises that seafood is the focus here. Tuck into a steaming heap of ginger-and-lemon grilled prawns or even the sumptuous yellow fin tuna, served with spring onion mash and a not overly spiced salsa. There’s crispy duck and lamb too.

Wine
Select labels from the immediate wine region enjoy pride of place on this comprehensive list. Each dish carries a wine recommendation.

Service
Staff work hard to provide a premium experience.

Ambience
Perched on an outcrop and dubbed ‘The Rock’, this venue has some of the best sea views around. Rough-hewn stone walls, earthenware pots and grass blinds lend a rustic feel while the newer sushi bar and alfresco areas adds big city style.

And...
Party into the night at the adjoining Gecko Bar. (C&MR, September 2010)

  • Great service, funny and friendly staff.Portions were well sized. The fish (Kingklip) was fresh and decorated in an array of gourmet-cooked vegetables. The sushi too was well worth it, especially enjoyed the variety they offered. Overall a great dining experience and I would love to return.

  • This is more a a commentary than a review. In Jan 2004 me and my wife had a seafood meal there which was a forgettable experience except for the fantastic view! It is therefor encouraging to see the better reviews posted more recently - I'd better go back there!
It cost an arm and a leg then, especially considering the average dishes and pathetic service but back then I got the impression that the place was quite new and inexperienced which, in all fairness, with certain exceptions most places in that region were not much better. Their advantage was that fantastic view which made you forget about the food and service.
We will always remember it nostalgically as my wife was, unbeknown to us, pregnant with our firstborn!!

  • One of my favourite restaurants in Hermanus. The sushi is world class, prepared by a Japanese master! And on Fridays (lunchtime only) the sushi is half price! There are also Thai chefs in the kitchen preparing authentic Thai curries, stir-fries and the most wonderful Tom Yum soups. The vibe is always good, service alway great and we are always delighted with the wonderful food. If you're after something more traditional like steak or prawns, that's great too.

  • I recently had my mothers 60th birthday at the restaurant. The general manager went far and beyond any expectations by collecting flowers for me and balloons to make the night special for her. We had a special dessert for her and the service was amazing.

  • Our third visit and probably our last. I booked a week ahead requesting a window table. On arrival we were offered a corner table wedged between a large table of 8 and a wall. When I requested why we did not have what was requested the manager said sorry they were full . We were eventually seated at another table with the promise that as soon as a window table came up they would move us. This never materialised and it was downhill from there. The service was shocking , drinks were slow, waiter did not listen to requests and my husband had the lamb which was tasteless. This is the third time we have received inferior service and will not return again.

  • Amazing view, great service and equally as mind-blowing food! The Harbour Rock is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to and I would sincerely recommend it to everyone! The winelist is astronomical, and the food produced by all three kitchens is fantastic. This is a place to add to your bucket list!

  • This place has the advantage of wonderful views and atmosphere, pity that the food is so horribly over priced. I am not someone who minds forking out money for a spectacular meal, but unfortunately their food is far from breathtaking. I ordered the vegetarian option for the day, which by Joburg standards was a starter portion, yet it cost R75. This was one of the Hermanus restaurants we would always visit when in town, but will now be scrapped from the list.
