Food
What you’ll find here is a typical Pretoria menu from a specific era, with meat and fish the stars of the show and an abundance of options. From the basic steaks in different sizes and cuts, to the pork neck steak with apple or mustard sauce or combos of steak and chicken, rib or prawns, that’s just the tip the iceberg. Then look further to soups and salads, game or ox tongue with mildly seeded mustard sauce, or fillet kebabs, they make sure it’s all there. As for sides, choose between chips, potato, mash or veggies, and then you have a trio of beans, spinach and pumpkin, almost a plate of boerekos. It’s a restaurant that delivers time and again. They (and their customers) know the recipe well, and neither ever veers in any other direction. Good food and quality service keeps everyone smiling.

Drinks
Theirs is a comprehensive wine list that covers all the expected options, from Boschendal and Buitenverwachting to Bellingham. Wines by the glass are served generously, at a good price.

Service
Everything is extremely efficient, even when packed on a chilly Pretoria night, and you are never left hanging. Staff are sweetly dressed in bright orange dresses. They’re determined to please and do just that.

Ambience
One of the original owners and his wife are running things now and has revamped the restaurant, adding a stoep area. There’s a lighter touch in the design now, to keep everything clean and simple, and while diners are packed in, the nooks and crannies disguise this and provide ample privacy.

And…
It might be better to book, but they’ll probably find space for you as not to disappoint. This is all about pleasing the diner.

When you walk into this establishment you feel a little sceptical about their food and delivery, but you’re proven wrong the minute a plate lands on your table. When they say never judge a book by its cover, they’re not kidding. While the decor is old school and a little retro, the food more than makes up for it. Try the lamb curry served with poppadum and sambals or, if you’re adventurous, try the oxtail tongue slices smothered in a mild seeded mustard sauce.

    Wine
The list is small but includes quite a few decent wines to choose from.

    Service
Exceptionally friendly. The waiters cater to your every whim.

    Ambience
The dark lighting definitely encourages a little romance. A

    And...
And… It’s quite popular and gets packed after 7pm. Either get there early or make a booking. (XZ,September 2010).

User reviews

  • Their signature steak is worth the trip but everything else, including the sides, was blah at best. If you're really, and I mean really, in the mood for a steak and you're in the neighborhood then go to HT otherwise I'd find something else. The critic's review is spot on.

  • I have been going to the hillside tavern for years and the fact that nothing has changed adds more appeal to the place. From the steak adorning the wall at the entrance and the dark coloured layout of the restaurant. The food is generous and well worth the asking price and the wine list is decent. It definitely is one of the best places to go for steak. Booking is essential.

  • We had dinner there last ight and were very disappointed. The service was slow, the food even slower in coming out. We ordered the chicken livers starter which tasted like tomato sauce and worster sauce heated up and 3 chicken livers and the gogonzola snails which were lovely. They had run out of rolls and served this with 3 half slices of brown bread. Our mains took over 45 minutes to arrive and when we enquired with the waiter, they told us they are backed up and we need to just wait and see when the food comes. When the food did arrive, the presentation was sloppy, the steaks cold, so the butter on them didn't melt. The onion rings soggy and oily. A big disappointment.
