Owner's description

This bar and restaurant is just the place to kick back and relax after a long work week. The wine list is vast and quite interesting, and the venue is warm and understated.

Hillside Tavern opened it’s doors in October 1989. Since then this popular restaurant has been one of Pretoria’s favourite meeting places for local customers and international tourists alike.

The dream did not stop there, and twice Hillside Tavern was awarded the “Golden T-Bone Award” for the best Grill House in South Africa. Our signature steak dishes have also won the “Grill House of the Year Competition” twice in South Africa.

    FANTASTIC ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
My T-Been was uitstekend en die groente is ou skool wat ek baie geniet het. Hulle sien my beslis weer Goeie wynlys en billike pryse
Their signature steak is worth the trip but everything else, including the sides, was blah at best. If you're really, and I mean really, in the mood for a steak and you're in the neighborhood then go to HT otherwise I'd find something else. The critic's review is spot on.
I have been going to the hillside tavern for years and the fact that nothing has changed adds more appeal to the place. From the steak adorning the wall at the entrance and the dark coloured layout of the restaurant. The food is generous and well worth the asking price and the wine list is decent. It definitely is one of the best places to go for steak. Booking is essential.

We had dinner there last ight and were very disappointed. The service was slow, the food even slower in coming out. We ordered the chicken livers starter which tasted like tomato sauce and worster sauce heated up and 3 chicken livers and the gogonzola snails which were lovely. They had run out of rolls and served this with 3 half slices of brown bread. Our mains took over 45 minutes to arrive and when we enquired with the waiter, they told us they are backed up and we need to just wait and see when the food comes. When the food did arrive, the presentation was sloppy, the steaks cold, so the butter on them didn't melt. The onion rings soggy and oily. A big disappointment.
