Have been frequenting Hoi Polloi every year for 3 years now with a group of girlfriends. We have had 3 fantastic experiences 3 years running. Service excellent, food excellent and find it reasonable for the exquisite dining!
I found Hoi Polloi to be very expensive and overpriced as they ask ridiculously high prices for mainstream drinks and the price for food can't be justified. Poor service as well.
    Great Food and wine
My fiancé and I were in Parys for the long weekend (16 December 2016) & decided to have a romantic dinner out one evening. I booked at Ruby's after it came up in conversation but quickly changed our reservation when a reliable (local) source told us Hoi Polloi is unbeatable! Both of us arrived with high expectations and wow, what a fantastic wine list ... page after page. Our first 2 choices were "sold out". We each ordered a starter (duck spring rolls, risotto with truffles) & main course (duck, fish cakes) respectively. The description on the menu alone is mouthwatering & then the food arrived. Reheated yet served cold & very dry. Very unpleasant to the palate; to say the least … all 4 dishes!!! And even though we gave verbal to the waitress each time, the manager - not once- came around to see how our evening was going & how the food was. The waitress was very apologetic & eventually offered a feedback/review card on which I (in detail) captured our experience. I went as far as to mention that if a chef places his name on a menu, I would expect that each meal be served freshly made, bursting of flavor & each taste should want us to return for another experience! And then I waited. My fiancé asked me repeatedly when am I going to write a review online & I kept postponing stating “let's give them time to respond to our written feedback either by means of a phone call or email”. To date, NOTHING. No follow-up, no apology, no effort even to invite us back to hopefully have a different experience. Especially since we paid full price for every poorly served dish! Except for our lovely, eager waitress - you can all hang your heads in shame employees of Hoi Polloi - especially you, “chef” … you should be thrilled I forgot your name despite it being printed proudly on the menu!
Was so looking forward to trying hoi polloi after my family had said it was the best place to eat in Parys. We went on good Friday, had a table booked. We waited a huge amount of time for our food. For starters we had springbok carpaccio, for R80 we got three tiny little pieces, the duck spring rolls were also very greasy. After another hour we got our mains which were for the price...shocking. The fillet steak was meant to be Med/rare but was well done, so we asked to have it taken off the bill as we couldn't wait any longer! Chicken roulade was the blandest dish I have tasted. The lamb curry was watery and very average, the lamb shank was also under seasoned and bland. Most of the food was barely warm. The manager was very good and could not apologised enough and asked us to fill out a review card for the chef. The wine was great which was the restraunts saving grace. I would love to come back to this restaurant again and hopefully have the experience my family have had in the past. Sadly today they were not on form.
