Food
So many good burgers, so little time… True of Cape Town mostly because of this place. This is the flagship in the now national chain and remains a favourite. Their burgers are phenomenal – and substantial – so starters are rarely ordered (but they're good, in case you were hungry and wondering). If you're heading straight for the burgers, try the Player (a beef patty topped with bacon, feta and avo) or the Original Royale (beef topped with bacon, cheddar, chilli and onion rings). Of the variety of options – covering beef, chicken, ostrich and veggie versions – these two stand out. Seal the deal with a portion of disco fries – skinny fries with melted cheddar, mozzarella, creamy peri-peri sauce and spring onions. They’re insanely delicious. If you have space for dessert, try the chocolate brownies or deep-fried Oreos.

Drinks
As expected, they stock a great selection of craft beers and interesting milkshakes. Of the latter, the peanut butter version is exceptional.

Service
Friendly without being annoying, and incredibly quick. This is the perfect place to pop in en route to a night on the town.

Ambience
No fuss. Outside features wooden benches and the inside holds designer-y chairs. Not that you would really notice. The burger on your plate will be getting all the attention.

And…
They don't take bookings, but turnover is fast, so you won't have to wait too long.

This burger joint has a scrumptious selection of home-made burgers, from the Poppa trunks with feta, Cheddar, sweet chilli sauce and a chilli popper to The Boom Boom burger, with tomato relish, biltong dust, chilli cream cheese and battered jalapeno chilli rings. Can’t decide? Order one of the sliders options, comprising three mini burgers with different toppings. Sides are ordered separately, but the burgers are enough on their own for those without a whopping appetite. Unlike the Kloof Street branch, the Somerset Road branch also offers fabulous pizzas. Try the moreish Blogger with roasted butternut, balsamic onion marmalade, goat’s cheese, pine nuts and rocket, or the Cab driver with creamy peri-peri chicken, fresh chilli and rocket. For dessert, share a decadent Lindt brownie sundae for two.

    Wine
A short but well-balanced list, with affordable options by the glass. Craft beer fans will be pleased to see Jack Black, Darling Brew, Brewers and Union, and Hudsons Pale Ale on the menu, as well as Everson’s Cider. Feeling brave? Tackle one of the rich milkshakes; your fellow diners will no doubt help you out.

    Service
Helpful and unobtrusive. Usually pretty speedy too, except when extremely busy.

    Ambience
Hip, but relaxed. A good venue for a date if you want to keep things casual, or have a meal out with friends in one of the booths.

    And...
Ask about happy hours when you book. There are often good deals on eating before 6pm. (Katharine Jacobs, April 2012)

  • WHAT A LET DOWN! I Was soo disappointed by the service at this restaurant! We waited 45 minutes just to get out food and when it did arrive the waiter had given us the wrong order! The service here was just so poor. It literally took the waiter 15 just for her to get me water ( tap water for crying out loud). I ordered a boss burger and my friend ordered the cheese burger. To be honest the food was not only cold when it got to us but it was mediocre. I had read all the wonderful reviews prior to going to Hudsons and I was expecting to be blown away. I was not. I will definitely NOT be returning to Hudsons.

  • This is the kind of place you when you want to get together with friends or go on an easy date and have a good time with great food. The ambience is very relaxed and the food is exceptional. It really deserves its reputation, the burgers are so so tasty. Paired with their big milkshakes or cocktails creates the perfect combination. Truly the best burger in town.

  • A nice viby atmosphere - lots of happy faces to be seen - that's the first impression I got, as I stepped onto the wooden deck. A waitress was right there to show to an available table (the last one on the patio area). We got seated and shortly thereafter, the menu's arrive and the drinks order taken. Good start!! The patty itself was a lovely, juicy, thick, pink-in-the-middle slab of beefiness! Just how I like it. The trimmings were not sparse and the bun soft and fresh! An orgasmic burger all round!

  • Hudsons never ever fails to disappoint! Every weekday they have happy hour from 4:30-6:30 where you can indulge in some of the BEST cocktails, beers on tap and starters (!!!) all for half price! When dinner time comes around, the options for burgers are so extensive that it's often hard to choose, but if you want a little taste of everything, I recommend the sliders where you're given 3 mini burgers from the menu! The vibe is great and the place is always buzzing. It's a great spot to frequent- I highly highly recommend it! (also the fishbowl-sized milkshakes are to die for)

  • Hudsons in Green point is the place to be if you are looking for a good burger, a fun time and an ice cold beer. I had the Original Royal burger which was very tasty and ended off my visit with the new cookie monster milkshake. Defiantly will be going back soon!

  • Still the tastiest burger I have ever eaten. It's all in the burger patty - delicious flavour and meaty texture. With a variety of burgers to choose from with fresh and flavourful toppings - definitely the yummiest burger I have add to date - finishing it off with my favourite dry drink of course ;)

  • Shocking service!! Waiting 30 minutes for drinks, mediocre food, heaters on when it was a hot day outside and then to put a cherry on the top a drink added to our bill that we never ordered. We only noticed when we got home and emailed the franchise only to get asked if we wanted to come back and get a free drink??? Perhaps if they concentrated on serving their customers and not adding extra drinks to peoples orders they would be able to run a better restaurant?

  • An absolute shocker of note! 50 minutes to get a drink - why? Because they ran out of glasses and were waiting for the clean glasses to come out of the dishwasher. The food - terrible, bones in the burger, shocking service - the waitress was pathetic. If you are too busy to cope rather shut the doors and stop letting people in. Never again, an awful experience.

  • This afternoon I convinced my boyfriend that we eat at the Hudsons. It was his first time visiting, so I thought it would be the perfect place as I usually love it there. However today was absolutely terrible! There were 2 blonde waitresses working and I cannot express enough how disappointed we were - mostly with the service. They were the least bit friendly, not welcoming, and had quite the attitude on them. One even appeared high?... Don't have much to say about the burgers today either, by the time we received them, we weren't even hungry anymore. Not sure we will be going back anytime soon. Disappointing.

  • Say "two milkshakes please" v e r y r e a l l y s l o o o w w l l y y y y.........Get the idea of how long it takes them to serve milkshakes. Try more than an hour. Oh and do not think you will get both at once. No, no, you will have to witness how your partner is guiltily sipping away at his/her milkshake. And when you finally catch the eye of the floor manager AND she actually reacts upon this, she will let you know it is not their fault that milkshakes take longer than pizzas, burgers etc., as they only have one blender!?

  • Great atmosphere. Really enjoyed being there. Very noisy but you feel as if you are alone with your own table in a way. Service is good. Friendly staff and very quick service. The burgers are really good as well as the chilli poppers. Sometimes exceptionally hot and sometimes mildly hot. Great restaurant. A must see. Especially happy hour as all starters are top dollar.

  • A bunch of us celebrated a birthday here last week. The pizza's, salads and cocktails were delicious. Very good value for money. 3 out of 4 burgers had pieces of gristle in the beef patty. The crumbed chicken strips starter masqueraded as rock hard weapons. The thing that let us down the most was the service. One pizza arrived 15 minutes before any other meals, there was no apology or explanation to the table for this. Our waitress was unfortunately quite rude and abrupt even when we tried to make light of the situation. As someone who has worked in the industry I completely understand what a busy Friday night service is like, but quite frankly that's no excuse to be rude to guests. Any mistakes can be forgiven if some sort of effort is made to make the guest feel like they are still being looked after. This is my fourth time there and My friends and I will not be returning. How disappointing...

  • Order the beer-battered onion rings and chilli poppers (with three cheeses) as sides and enjoy them with your pint of beer on tap. The hand-made burger patties are tender and come with delicious pickles and sauces. There are a couple of vegetarian options too. Try to leave room for their milkshakes – or take one home with you.
