  • We chose Jakes for our new Years evening. The service was shocking as our waitress was not to be found most of the evening. Our main meal came two hours after our starter and mine was over cooked and my partners was half the size of anybody else's. He went to complain to management who basically shrugged him off and told him he was lying when he insisted his steak was way smaller than it should of been. There was no compensation in any way or apology. I then e mailed the owner and after a week of no reply called to speak to him three times but he never bothered to call me back. I find this appalling. Our new years eve was ruined by this. I finally received my main meal at 11 45 p.m. Real pity about this as we will not go back now.

  • One restaurant experience is bad enough but two at the same restaurant within 24 hours is just not possible, right? Our first bookclub meeting last Thursday evening was meant to be a celebration, welcoming new members to the group and toasting a birthday as well. Steenberg Brut was on order and after a bit of a wait, the fresh-out-of-school waitress brought out the (correct) bottle and popped the cork and poured. Except, the bubbly was warm and waitress didn't think anything of it. Sent it back and the second bottle out was marginally colder by a degree! And again didn't seem to be a problem to the waitress or the manager on duty. Oh well, I thought, serving deliciously chilled bubbly in the middle of summer isn't obviously something Jakes cares about! Which brings me to the second rendezvous at Jakes, lunch the next day with my lovely PR agency team. I tried to discard the previous night's shoddy service and warm bubbly but sadly, the service was even worse than the night before. And with only a few tables occupied! Eventually food orders were taken and I was looking forward to the Thai prawn and chicken curry. After an almost 35-minute wait, the food arrived and oh dear, bits of mould floating on the top my curry dish and the schnitzel dish was cold. After trying in vain to locate our waitress, I eventually waved down the manager (same guy from the night before) and he stared disbelieving at the offensive curry! By now it was well after 2pm and I had another appointment at 2.30pm and was famished. A rushed chorizo hotdog mess from the kitchen was the best they could do. Any by the way, the head of the PR agency who was lunching with me was part of the team who launched Jakes and the Steenberg Village complex. She was absolutely mortified and deeply disappointed that the levels of service had dipped. Many will gloss over a mediocre experience and drink more wine to dull the poor service and quality of food. With those prices and the smug attitude of the Jakes staff, needless to say, I won't be back.

  • Loved lunch today. Had delicious quesidillas which I hadn't tried before. ...havent found anything on the menu yet that isnt delish. Service was great. Amalia was efficient and friendly....didn't wait for second thoughts on the second carafe of wine - my kinda girl! I still rate jakes as one of the best "any time any day of the week" restaurants.

  • Jakes's outdoor experience has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere, surrounded by greenery and filled with the sounds of many conversations. Service levels started off well until smoking was allowed in a non-smoking area and after concerns were raised, it seems that more-frequent guests are allowed to bypass the rules and non-smokers who were not 'regulars are ignored.
Management hid inside and allowed the smoking regulars to continue as they pleased.

  • Firstly...liver, lamb liver? Eeeeeew, is it nice anywhere?!

I have been to the Jakes in Steenberg over 50 times in the past 6 years. I personally have never been let down. :)

Recommendations? Duck, duck, duck, ermagawd duck! (Not on the menu but do ask).
The lamb shank is phenomenal as is EVERY main actually. All the ones that I have had have been anyways. I have been open to trying everything and have thouroughly enjoyed every experiance there. (Everything but the livers) lol

As for starters, I adore the tasting platter but I do try change up my choice regularly. I am human and do have my favourites...The carpaccio being one of them. Yum!

Deserts are ALL to die for!
Definately try the dessert platter (lovely bits of everything tasty).
If in a chocolatey mood then give the Triple choc fudge brownie a go.
    You won't be disappointed.

The decor has been changed recently. Looks AMAZING!!
Well done guys, really sets the perfect ambiance.
From the very stunning entrance, being glammed up with copper coins. Followed by series of antique light bulbs all round the dining area. Breath taking wall art and paintings all round. Large mirrors to reflect lighting and care of the plants the share the space. Such fine detail and thaught process that was carefully put into the piecing of it all together so perfectly.

I could go on about the food and decore for ages to be honest :) (I'm honestly not a big fat person)..

Service has on occasion been slow. Sorry guys.
However service has always been friendly and attentive to both the needs of the table and the customer. :)

They have lovely long stemmed wine glasses and nicely spaced and laid out tables tables too.
I usually bring my own wine, it's only R25 corkage. The wine list is good too.
it's nice to see some new winners being added. :)

    If you have never been?
Go go go! Find out for yourself and form your own opinion. Total win from me.

    Do Enjoy :) x

  • The liver and onions is disgustingly bad. No sign of management. Mediocre food generally. Avoid if possible. What a let down.
