Food
Try one of the famous flatbreads like the delicious Moroccan with chilli, lamb, and tztatziki, or the Oriental duck spring rolls. Unbeatable mains include beetroot Woolloomooloo, oven-roasted chicken with mash and a beetroot reduction, and superb slow-roasted five spice Cantonese pork belly. Finish with the famous deep-fried ice cream with butterscotch sauce.-

Wine
A good list with something for most tastes and pockets.

Service
Usually good but can slow down when it is really busy.

Ambience
The courtyard is focused around a large Brazilian pepper tree, giving the place a nice indoor-outdoor feel with alfresco dining on summer evenings being particularly delightful.

And...
There is a sister restaurant in Steenberg Village when the schlep to Kenilworth gets too much. (GL, September 2010)

  • Except for the food which was outstanding a disappointing evening. Service was very poor. Beer on drinks menu not available. Menu not what it used to be.

  • Jakes on Summerley is a faithful standby venue for lunch and dinner and happily stays open in between. Good to see hands on owner Liz giving the decor a revamp, well timed.

  • The restaurant and atmosphere is really nice. However I ordered the sirloin with blue cheese (medium) and it was the toughest piece of meat I've ever had to eat. I would not recommend getting a steak at this restaurant based on my experience.

  • Absolutely divine - the family owned restaurant is gorgeous with wonderful mouth watering foods that slip off your tongue. I felt so at home and the atmoshphere was festive.

  • I had the most amazing time at Jakes! I know that the restaurant has been an institution for many years as we use to frequent it often about 5 years ago. My friends and I loved the revamp... absolute class and sohistication yet comfy and at home. The food and service was really great. I had the duck, deliciously tasty and crispy! The entire evening was pleasant and positively memorable. A fabulous establishment that I will most certainly recommend. GO JAKES!

  • Jakes on Summerley was one of my favourite restaurants 5 years ago and I used to frequent it at least fortnightly. I took a group of friends there last night and whilst the revamp is fabulous I was appalled at the change in portion size. They are either attempting to do nouvelle cuisine or trying to make more profit. The portion sizes were always generous whereas last night the portions were miniscule. I had the Thai red curry which is served on a teacup size portion of rice with a side offering of curry which was more like a starter portion. I felt as if the portion sizes had been halved yet the prices had gone up. The service was also not fabulous and the waitress actually came and asked us whether we had meant to tip her less than 10% which I thought was a complete cheek.Come on Jakes - get your food and service to match the ambience which is truly fabulous.

  • I ate at Jakes on Summerly last week and didnt experience the Jakes of old. The restaurant has sadly gone from destination duck to destination disappointing. The service was average (although, come to think of it - it hasnt ever been particularly impressive), the twice-cooked special, so special it doesnt appear on any menu was well below standard and it appeared that the one and only credit card machine works on a hierarchy basis of how long the waiter has worked at the restaurant...

  • Not as impressive as I had hoped. The atmosphere is convivial, and the menu varied, but the food didnt live up to my expectations. A bit pricey.

  • I recently celebrated my 50th birthday at Jakes and what an event it was! From the start of our dealings with the Jakes team to the night of the event we were impressed with their professional and friendly service. They were helpful, super efficient, accommodating, prompt and made my special evening an occasion that will be remembered until old age zaps my memory! In short, Jakes provided the kind of service everyone in Cape Town can be proud of; the kind of service every visitor to our city should be exposed to. Not only did the evenings logistics run without a hitch but the food was a gastronomical treat of note. All 114 people ate at the same time; every dish served at its right temperature and prepared to perfection. Weve had nothing but praise from our guests and can ourselves do nothing but lavish thanks and praise on this restaurant and staff. Jakes is a beautifully decorated venue for drinks, special occasions, romantic dinners and family outings. Its comfortable and relaxed... a bit like home away from home, except that the cooking is way better. Try the duck in orange sauce - its truly seriously delicious. We can see why people would want to go back to Jakes - many in our party certainly will.
