Food
Joostenberg is well known for their deli and nursery on the property and is popular with families on the weekend. The restaurant offers a menu of hearty bistro fare where meat-centric dishes dominate. Their pâtés, terrines and rillettes are legendary, and are served with bread and pickles. If you are looking for something lighter to start the meal, try the smoked trout, cream cheese and crepe roulade with smoked snoek and trout mousse.

Pork features strongly on their list of mains and you can expect dishes such as pork sausages with apple sauce and mashed potatoes, pork cheek and chorizo casserole. Croque monsieur and gourmet beef joosten-burger with triple cooked hand cut chips are generous in size and highly recommended. The aioli that it's served with is sublime. Their dry-aged beef steak is cooked to perfection and presented with a red wine and mushroom sauce and potato lyonnaise.

The traditional Sunday lunch of three courses is excellent value and super popular for families. The portion sizes are very generous, so save yourself for the best bits. The restaurant has sprawling outside lawn space and with chickens roaming and swans on the nearby lake, is very child friendly. They also have a great children’s menu and their home-made ice cream is delicious.

Drink
They have an extensive and impressive wine list, which includes wine from the region as well as all of their own. They also sell a range of French wines which makes it all the more interesting.

Service
Service is friendly and attentive.

Ambience
In winter they light a big fire, which makes the tiled floored venue a little cozier. In summer it's wonderful to sit outside under the trees.

And...
Be sure to pop into the deli to peruse their range or tasty treats and the fresh meat market on your way out. They sell their aioli and rillettes there too. If you enjoy beer, the Stellies Taproom has opened opposite the restaurant – you can stop in for a tasting of the six craft beers they have on sale.

    Food
With its excellent butchery, deli and proximity to a couple of nurseries, the bistro at Joostenberg has turned into a very popular weekend spot. Meats feature prominently on the menu, as you may expect from a butchery known for its quality. Starters include the likes of pork tongue with tartar sauce, and a charcuterie platter with terrines, pâté and rilette. Mains will keep meat-lovers equally happy, with steak, free-range beef bourguignon and pork sausages with applesauce and mash, although you’ll also find a line fish of the day and a vegetarian omelette with mushrooms, gruyère and rocket.

Sundays feature a set lunch menu which offers excellent value for money. The three course meal brings a selection of starters (don’t overindulge here; the portions are huge and you’ll be forced to pick, as we did, at the remainder of the meal) like a fresh little salad of smoked salmon and avocado, pork terrine with pickles, and a delicious snoek pâté. Mains offer a choice between bouillabaisse, roast pork neck or tender veal with baby onions and mushrooms – it’s very much the Sunday lunch experience. Finish off with a loaded cheese plate or a delicious berry tartlet with berry coulis and vanilla pod ice cream. This is hearty, country-style dining made for healthy appetites.

    Drinks
The wine list has a lot to offer, not only from nearby vineyards but from Joostenberg wines themselves – the white Joostenberg Fairhead blend is particularly fragrant and delicious.

    Service
Friendly, if a little forgetful at times – but then again, what’s your hurry? Sit back, relax and enjoy the slow-food far-style atmosphere.

    Ambience
This spacious venue is designed for long, lazy lunches and big family gatherings. On weekends, parents make the most of this child-friendly space, and there’s bound to be lots of toddlers running about. This means the added entertainment of watching a gaggle of young boys chasing after some harassed chickens, or warily cosying up to a very unfussed cart horse grazing on the lawns.

    And…
You’ll kick yourself afterwards if you don’t stop for some shopping at the deli – there’s a fantastic range of quality meats, fruit, vegetables and breads. You can basically do a week’s worth of grocery shopping here, at very reasonable prices.

    (October 2015)

  • If you visit on a weekend, expect to stay for five hours. The beautiful country setting has rolling lawns and a fantastic play area for kids. Lovely food with genuine ‘homemade-ness’. You simply must order something with pork. (EO mag 2014)

  • Warm, friendly staff. Excellent food by Christophe Dehosse. Kid friendly. Warm fire in the winter en cool "spritzers" on the stoep in the summer. Just perfect! Joostenberg also produces fantastic Organic wines. The Deli stocks great quality meats and home made goodies. Everything you need in one place!

  • We were a party of 8 that dined here for a special birthday lunch a few Sundays ago. Gorgeous food served in an unpretentious way. The ultimate lazy Sunday lunch restaurant. DO have the Bouillabaisse and Lemon Pound cake (for dessert) if it's on the menu!

  • Joostenberg Bistro is our favourite restaurant in Stellenbosch. Whenever we can get away for lunch or breakfast, we head there. Service is always friendly, food is always delicious and the chickens make me smile every time! Joostenberg also has some impressive (some organic) wines and the deli will sort you out for dinner or tea.

  • The Joostenberg Deli is one of our favourite eating places, whether it's a family outing on a Sunday, breakfast with friends or lunch for a special celebration. It truly is a restaurant for all occasions and all seasons. In summer it is open to the beautiful gardens and rolling lawns; in winter the huge log fire keeps it cosy and warm. Susan and Christoph are professional hosts, combining Christoph's excellent and varied fare with Susan's attentive, calm presence in the restaurant seeing that everything runs smoothly. Like all good restaurants, their staff are long-time employees and have obviously been well-trained. The food is delicious and plentiful with the menu that changes seasonally and with the added benefit of Christoph's French flair. This is a restaurant that has it all!

  • Although I have already replied to the client directly by email the day after her visit, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify my response.
It was not my intention to be rude or disrespectful or unfriendly or arrogant. My only intention was only to ask to "please turn off the volume on your phone as the sound is annoying". To my mind I was addressing your husband, not your son. It was a busy day, and most of the tables were occupied by clients enjoying their meals. We strive to provide a relaxed, pleasant dining experience, as well as family friendly environment with lots of outside space for kids to run and play. However noise in the dining area is an issue for us as many clients come to the farm for a peaceful experience. I think it is understandable to assume that music and sound in general on cell phones is annoying to surrounding clients and to avoid that I thought is reasonable to ask you to switch off the sound on the phone. I honestly don’t have any other reason or excuse for my reaction on the day and I hope that you can see my point.
Although it is irrelevant to the matter, I would also like to correct your comment that I was “born into” the business. This is not the case. My husband and I established the business together with my father and sister and we have all worked at it for the last 14 years.
Please feel free to contact me by email should you like to take the matter further

  • *******VERY BAD Experience************. Supposedly being a child friendly venue - while seated outside my 5 year old son excitedly showed his Grandma a short video (normal volume) of the horse and cart ride he has just been on at Klein Joostenbergvlakte Bistro, when the restaurant manageress Susan Dehosse, pounced on us and asked us to switch off the phone because it was annoying. I was floored by her arrogance and inability to speak in a courteous manner. There was no one behind us, at the far end was a table with happy laughing kids and infront of us was 2 happy ladies enjoying the jovial spirits of the kids (ours aswell). I can just Imagine what would have happened if my 1 and a half year old son started to cry there, would she have slapped him to get him to keep quiet. Afterwards, we went up to her and said that we did not appreciate the manner by she addressed our child, she arrogantly said she was not addressing our child but addressing us (she was looking at our 5 year old son while speaking and who then afterwards asked me mom, why did the lady say I am annoying? (We don't even subject him to dialogue like that at home). I asked her who found it annoying did she or the customers - all she could answer was "I am sure the customers found it annoying" (again using her arrogant tone) We as parents are always tuned in to respect others around us and we are quite sensitive to our kids noise levels and usually manage it well not to intrude on the comfort of others (as those with small kids would be able to relate to this). I told her, it was not what she said but the way she said it, she just looked at us with a straight face and blurted out "but it was annoying". In this day and age I never thought we would come across such rudeness in the service industry, it still exists, it exists at Klein Joostenbergvlakte Bistro. She is in their Family Business and got the opportunity to run the Bistro because she was born into it but this still gives her no right to treat others with disrespect. Who should I report her to, her dad? She'll probably tell him to shut up as well. What a beautiful venue but how spoilt the memory...... :(

  • What a lovely spot for a casual Sunday family lunch with kids. Laid back farm setting, very informal. Good wine list and nice wines from the farm. All well priced. The menu is set at R165 pp and this includes generous sharing starters and a choice of mains and dessert. Honest farm style food, not pretentious in any way, all ten of us enjoyed it! The kids are well catered for also with several kiddie selections but also the option of a small version of the adult mains.. how clever. If you are looking for a casual chill out day in the Winelands and a place that the kids will adore try it...

  • Having read so many positive reviews about Christophe Dehosse's previous restaurant, Christophe, in Stellenbosch, I looked forward to and so much wanted to enjoy Joostenberg Bistro.
Perhaps, for a family this is a great place. But screaming children and abundance of flies will negate any positive hope for a good experience. The food, while good, was not exceptional, but I really did expect better. A set menu with heavy hot meals in 34 degree heat simply doesn't work, and particularly not when the roast pork was overwhelmed by fennel. Service was okay though I had to dredge out my ropey Afrikaans. The highlight, however, was the Joostenberg white wine blend, which was crisp and light.

  • Was taken away from work yesterday by my husband for a surprise lunch. He took me to Joostenberg where we had not been for a while as we tend to go to restaurants closer to us for lunch.
The food was amazing as usual and such good value for money. He had the prok cheecks which were delicious and I had the charcuterie platter with bread and salad. Such comfort food, done perfectly and so satisfying. Lovely wines by the glass to accompany your meal too.

  • We enjoyed a delicious three-course Sunday lunch (we arrived late but they enquired and happily made a provision). We will most definitely visit the restaurant again soon. We enjoyed most tender pork and chicken dishes. Tasty, fresh ingredients - reminded me of my Moms home cooking (just slightly better Mom, sorry).
