Food
The menu offers a fresh take on trendy Mexican food, using fresh seasonal ingredients in dishes that are perfect for sharing. Kick off with favourites like chilli poppers and empanadas filled with sweet potato, feta and tequila-soaked mushrooms, then move onto the likes of steak or pulled pork tacos with orange chipotle sauce, served with your choice of a soft or hard taco. The flavoursome and spicy beef strips with chimichurri are delicious and definitely worth a try. Other highlights include tacos and burritos. The dessert menu is small but features delectable options like the hot churros served with custard.

Drinks
La Santa Muerte has a small bar, offering an adequate selection of mostly local wines. Maybe more suited to the Mexican fare is the wide selection of cocktails. Try the beer cocktail made with traditional Mexican brews such as Chavela (tomato juice, beer and hot sauce) or the Michelada (tomato juice, lemon, tobacco sauce and a shot of tequila). They also offer two commercial beers and a craft tequila ale.

Service
The staff are friendly, efficient and well versed on the menu.

Ambience
The black pressed ceilings, parquet flooring and antique bar give the space a quirky and unique ambience. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, making this the perfect hangout spot for the cool Melville bunch.

  • VERY NOISY! SERVICE IS SHOCKING! The staff talk about their "last free meal", around the bar while on duty. THE FOOD: - Half the chicken meals on the menu: not available. - Jalapeno poppers must have been fried in cold oil. It was NOT AT ALL crispy, pale in color, chewy, soggy and pretty much still raw batter on the inside. - Taco shells were soggy, the chicken strips was SO dry, it must have been fried 3 times. - Ceviche salad: THIS IS NOT FRESH FISH as indicated on the menu. (I have plenty ceviche meals) and you can see this just looking at it. My salad was placed in a silver foil container in the same brown takeout bag as the hot food order. The salad was warm and was totally nausiating just looking at it! NOT A PLACE TO EAT!!! Take your chances with one of the many other eateries down the lane.

  • Muerte means death in Spanish hence skull and grungy look theme of restaurant.Had a crumbed chicken taco which was nice ,not too dry and came with guacamole. Paired taco with fire in the mouth 3 amigos sauce which was tasty and definitely for fire seeking chilli addicts

  • This is by far our favorite Mexican eatery. We love their poppers and soft-shell tacos. Their cocktails are unique and really delicious too...here's the but...the service is almost non-existent. You will wait...for a long time...for everything. This combined with the slightly dark and somewhat unclean look (it is modelled on the Saint of Death after all) are the drawbacks. Knowing this - we still come because the food is just that good...pity the menu was not a bit more diverse, but we love it nonetheless.

I keep coming back to La Santa Muerte, I love the variety of hot sauces, but even more I love the TACOs, they are so delicious, never ever have I had moreish nachos!!! The portion sizes are perfect for everyone! Double YUM!
