I took visitors to Little Ethiopia for lunch on Sunday after a wander round a quiet downtown Cape Town. The lights and music were switched on as we sat down to a rather indifferent welcome even though we were the only people there! We ordered a shared vegetarian starter which was a little tasteless, followed by four meat and one vegetarian dish. Apart from the Doro Wot consisting of one tiny chicken leg, the flavorings were all pretty much the same, and the vegetarian dish was nothing more than a rather bland brown gravy. We had asked for a special (R200) coffee ceremony after lunch but it was all done in another corner of the cafe whilst we were eating and we were just brought cups of coffee and a platter of popcorn with no 'ceremony'. I had arrived with high expectations from the reviews but left feeling very disappointed and short changed.

This is one of those hidden gems that you have to venture off the main drag (albeit not very far) to find. It only seats about 15 people, so best to book. The food takes some time, but that's because it's all freshly made - and definitely worth the wait. Everything is delicious, but the shiro is a must - even for die-hard carnivores. If you want wine, BYO.

Best Ethiopian food in Cape Town! Warm, friendly hosts and some of the best food I have ever eaten! Don't forget to bring along a bottle of your favourite wine. (I'll recemmend a chenin or a chardonnay.) This is a must-see, must-taste, Mother City marvel!

This was one of the culinary highlights of my 3 months in Cape Town. We were immersed in a very friendly atmosphere. The staff were fantastic both times we went and the tantalizing food satisfied every taste bud I possess. So much so, we came back for a traditional Ethiopian coffee session. The whole experience, both times, was totally worth every rand. I look forward to going there again, when I get back to Cape Town.
    Baie dankie!

Absolutely amazing! Everything traditional. The beef "Tibs" was what I had and I am speechless.
