Food
With a carefully thought-out menu showcasing food representative of various African cuisines, Moyo caters for the discerning guest wishing to experience not only what South Africa has to offer, but also food with influences from the rest of the continent. For a starter, try the crocodile tail pies served with a pineapple and orange salsa and a rocket and red onion salad. For vegetarians, the Somalian butternut rice cakes – made with Arborio rice and roasted and puréed butternut – make for a hearty and flavourful starter. Mopane worms and a chicken liver bunny chow are also part of the starter offering, as are seafood and salad options.

For mains, the Karoo lamb and chickpea tagine cooked in a tomato, peach, ginger and coriander sauce makes for a perfect main course, with a well-executed complex balance of flavours and tender top quality meat. If you really love your meat and wish for more than one type on your mains plate, then the Nigerian meat kebab is a good main course option with its skewered variety of beef rump, chicken breast and ostrich fillet, grilled and basted in suya basting and served with tomato salsa and corn fritters.

The peppermint crisp cheesecake is a unique flavour combination of two South African sweets that works. Served with a butterscotch sauce and chocolate drizzle, it is not for the faint-hearted, but brings a sweet ending to a perfect meal.

Drinks
Traditional cocktails such as pina coladas and mojitos are part of the drinks offering, as well as more unique cocktails like the African Sunset, which comprises Spiced Gold rum and peach schnapps muddled with fresh strawberries, mixed with berry puree and fresh limes. Shooters are also available and are a good idea for after-work drinks or a boys’ or girls’ night out. Brampton wines are on offer and sold by the glass or by the bottle, as well as a range of other whites, champagnes, MCCs, roses and reds. Top quality whiskies, bourbon and brandies are on the drinks list, as are rums, vodkas, gins and tequila.

Service
The service is great while booking (they send SMSes to confirm) and at the door upon arrival. But once seated, it takes longer than necessary to place a drinks order or to get a menu. These long waits, although minor irritations given the overall hospitable environment, are difficult to overlook as they persist between courses, with waitrons neglecting to clear the table properly or to check on guests after serving each meal. On observation, the bigger tables do tend to get more attention.

Ambience
The African-themed décor, traditional music, and dim lighting create the perfect ambience for the quintessential modern African dining experience. They also do face painting while you dine, making guests feel welcome and of one spirit with the authentically modern African environment.

And…
There is a children’s menu, making the restaurant ideal for a family night out.

House specialities include carrot and cumin soup and isishebo lamb curry (traditional Durban lamb curry with coconut, banana, yoghurt and crisp poppadoms). The Salt River samoosa platter includes a selection with pea and potato, cheese or curried beef. For vegetarians there is lentil bobotie, vegetable pastilla (pie) and tagine with seven vegetables. Fillet Khuzwayo was created by chef David Khuzwayo and is a delicious play on Chateaubriand steak with marrow bones and béarnaise sauce.

    Wine
Excellent list with well-chosen wines like Hartenberg The Stork Shiraz or Van Zylshof Riverain. There’s also a selection of great cigars, even though smoking is only allowed outside within a measured distance from the eating area.

    Service
Well-spoken, charming and attentive staff greatly contribute to the fun and entertainment that this establishment sells.

    Ambience
Melrose Arch offers live music over weekends, bringing home the diverse cultures of the continent. There are two little ‘gigi’ areas on the lower level that must be the hottest love seats in the whole of Africa. Book them without delay to impress your loved one. Rooms are eclectically decorated with an African fusion feel and mosaics.

    And...
Moyo now has a catering section called Moyo on the Move, with not just food and beverages, but the entire Moyo concept, from the waiters in garb to tented interiors, furniture and entertainment. (HF, October 2011)

User reviews

  • When reviewing a restaurant the food is reviewed based on quality, taste and cost. The venue can be evaluated based on decor, layout and service. Looking at Moyo's food it failed completely with mediocre tasting food that might not agree with everyone's pallet (or stomach) when compared to above average cost. The accompanying starch is dry and not enough gravy is provided to allow you to enjoy the African meal without choking. The decor of the restaurant is run down with regards to the two rooms available to general public and they were shabby and not up to the standard of the area. The chairs were so uncomfortable it might have been better to sit on wooden stumps. The service would have been acceptable for a busy evening though not for a quiet winter time were it had been sporadic with us mostly waiting to get their attention. Layout is also unconventional placing some tables in front the firefighting equipment which not only is unattractive but unsafe. The layout of the Kitchen area means you sit under the mezzanine area which results in many loud bangs as people move chairs about or drop things, making the whole experience devoid of any enjoyment.

  • Took seven international guests who were all disappointed. Ordered the large kraal grill which advertised meat for 4to 6 people with two side choices. When the food arrived the side choice was only for one person. I called the waiter who referred me to the floor manager who then called the general manager who informed me that serving a side choice was only for one person and not for 4 to 6. This was company policy and could not be changed. He grudgingly brought a serving for another person. We left after mains and with faces painted proudly went to another restaurant for dessert and coffee. The starters average R65 and mains R 150. Bring a scale if you order meat the weights bear little relation to what you see on your plate.

  • We had dinner at Moyo Melrose Arch on Tuesday 29/03, and it was a shocker. Only the 6th bottle of wine selected was in stock. Wrong starter was brought to the table. After waiting for close to an hour for main course, the waiter came over to tell us that 2 of the 3 mains were finished and we had to re-order. Single malt whiskey ordered after the meal was also out of stock. Never again!!!

  • The standard of the food was very good. The portions are big although it would be nice to get some vegetables with the main meal. Our waiter got a few things wrong but otherwise the service was fast and friendly. The ambience is very nice, complemented with some striking decor. We sat at the Kitchen Level and found it quite noisy, we struggled to have a conversation and had to almost shout at some stages. Next time I will rather sit outside. Unfortunately I did not find the prices fair as the quality of the food did not justify it.

  • Moyo was such an experience for me that I took guests there three times in two weeks. On the last visit, when taking our orders the waiter asked whether we would like some vegetables with the meal and I said yes. Ordering anything without seeing the price is probably not clever, but you dont expect a reputable establishment like Moyo to charge their customers R160 for a plate of vegetables and rice. The final insult came when I could not submit my complaint on their website after three tries. Thant bye bye Moyo for me for ever!
