Food
This is a very popular breakfast and lunch spot on Parkhurst's ultra-hip and bustling 4th Avenue. Try their signature breakfast dish, the famous egg basket, which comprises of two toast baskets served with crispy bacon and tomato relish. Or enjoy a combination of savoury and sweet by ordering the half & half, which is half a portion of egg basket or half a portion of crumpets with layered mascarpone and strawberries, drizzled in syrup. The croissants and other baked goods are also tempting. For lunch, have the homemade chicken or steak pie and end with their no-guilt flourless Belgian chocolate cake, or the pear and almond tart. Remember to take home some of their delicious macaroons.

Drinks
The coffee is good, as is the selection of teas.

Ambience
Vibey and busy, with views of chefs pulling piping-hot baked delights out of ovens.

Service
Quick, professional and friendly.

And …
They make cakes to order. Why not book a table for high tea, and afterwards pop in next door to browse at their unique selection of books.

    Food
Sunday brunch at Nice is always the perfect way to end the weekend and get ready for the week ahead. Their breakfast menu may be small, but it offers lots of variety. Their breakfast baskets are everyone’s favourite – you’ll find toasted bread fashioned into a basket shape, filled with eggs, bacon and tomato, or scrambled egg with smoked salmon and tomato relish. For a scrumptious treat, try the crumpets topped with mascarpone, strawberries, bacon and maple syrup.

Their lunch menu offers a great choice of pastas, sandwiches, salads and freshly baked pies. For something sweet, try their famous ‘magic’ bars: delicious homemade caramel and nut bars that they also use in making ice cream. Alternatively, opt for the very popular roulade with strawberries and rosewater-flavoured cream.

    Drinks
The wine list is small but well curated and features varieties like the Fat Bastard sauvignon blanc, Rupert & Rothschild Classique and Zandvliet Shiraz. These wines are also available by the glass, and there is also a few bubblies represented, from Graham Beck to Veuve Clicquot.

    Service
Service is fast and efficient, with friendly owner/manager Carla keeping a watchful eye. Servers are well informed about the menu and helpful without being overbearing.

    Ambience
Warm and cosy, Nice feels like a real neighbourhood café. The décor is simple and homely, with decorative splashes in the form of antique chandeliers and flower vases. Tea is served in antique silver teapots and pretty porcelain teacups. The restaurant fills up with both families with kids and the trendy Parkhurst crowd.

    And…
Do try out their deli take-away service. The deli menu is vast and includes items like freshly baked pies, cordials, speciality Yswara teas, handmade ice creams and cakes you can order for a special occasion.

  • Food
Opt for a slice of chicken pie (perhaps the best in Jozi), or crumpets stacked three-high with mascarpone, bacon, strawberries and Maple syrup. Other options include great organic salads, gluten-free Belgian chocolate cake, and scrumptious toasted croissants with fluffy scrambled eggs and perfectly crisped bacon.

    Wine
    A small but good selection.

    Service
Friendly and helpful to the extent that we were offered a plate to share. Waitrons were knowledgeable and able to eloquently recite the day’s fresh juices and other specialities.

    Ambience
From pretty antique roses in silver bowls to restored Bentwood chairs and soft, worn damask, it’s all delightfully old world. Moms can bring their broods – dressed up in finery - for tea to teach them about the finer things in life.

    And...
The bookshop offers a range of great literature and gifts, and there’s couture one shop down from the restaurant. Perfect for the ladies who lunch. (HF, October 2011)

  • I heard it get's crazy on weekends there. So I tried them out for lunch. Was quite happy with the services. Probably because I sat far away from the kitchen lol. The food was fresh and delicious. Will be sure to try it out again.

  • Visited in June 2014. Average food, too many people crammed into a single space and a ridiculously rude owner who has no idea what's going on and who shows no shame shouting at both staff and customers. Excellent venue if public humiliation is your thing.

  • Got asked to leave after our meal cause other people waiting for a table. No time to relax and enjoy our tea/oj. After spending over R250 on breakfast this morning it was time to go. Not good first impression.

  • Nice on fourth definitely has the best breakfast in town. The food is always consistent and never disappoints. The waiters are friendly and very clued up, however the manager/owner is very rude - she lacks people skils, My husband and I had an incident there, where she spent about half an hour screaming at her kitchen staff and waiters, passing offensive slurs at them...I would like to enjoy my breakfast and tea in a peaceful environment not one that has just been made awkward by the "manager" not to mention how rude she was to these poor people. Last time we have breakfast there.

  • The suggestion that Nice has one of the Nice(st) pies in Johannesburg would be true. Their beef pie is incredible. It is well presented and looks and tastes really good. I love the simple decor and very friendly owner who has become a great acquaintance. They serve really great breakfast, and I wish they were open in the evenings for dinners, but one understands that there are grandchildren and pets to tend to. They could do more to employ diverse staff. Though I love the idea of employing high school learners, because how else does one instill values of responsibility, than building a work ethic from young. There is potential for difference in any industry. It's always nice to visit Nice.

  • I love Nice. They make the most wonderful breakfasts. Everything is fresh, and if you can't decide you can have half of one and half of another! The toast baskets with eggs and bacon and the crumpet stack with fresh fruit are a good combination - breakfast and breakfast pudding! Get there early, or be prepared to wait as they don't take bookings, but as there's lots of people watching to be done this is no great hardship.

  • Over the last 3 months, Nice has become my local morning hangout. The staff are mainly students, making them attentive, friendly and eager to give you great service. The decor is very simple - mismatched wooden tables and chairs, white linen tableclothes with a rose in a silver cup. Tea is a joy, served in beautiful silver teapots with a variety of mismatched china teacups - this is usually accompanied by one of their cupcakes, lemon ricotta cakes or gingerbread stars - all of which are equally delicious.

Their "Scrummy Crumpets" are really good (not a huge portion, but enough to pass as breakfast) and their Chicken Mayonaise and Balsamic Onions Toasted Sarmie is to die for.

Whilst it's not the cheapest place in town, you don't mind paying a little extra given the quality of food and service. Can't see myself anywhere else in the mornings.

  • We had breakfast at Nice last week and I thought that Nice was an understatement. Service is bright and breezy, food is delicious and we thought that breakfast was good value for money. We enjoyed breakfast so much that we decided to join them for lunch this week. Lunch was very tasty, but we didnt feel that it was good value for money. My fiancé ate the beef pie and salad for R60 and felt that it was a little dry (needed gravy) and the salad was hardly noticeable it was so small. I had the rump and caramelised onion salad also for R60 and, although above average in taste, was very unsatisfying in size. I drank a lime cordial and (tap) water and was charged an exorbitant R15 for a tiny glass. Total bill R200 for starter value. All in all, we will keep this as a favourite breakfast spot, but were too hungry when we left to recommend it for lunch.

  • My daughter invited me to join her for lunch last Sunday at Nice on 4th. This was my first and definitely not last visit! Well, what a delectable treat! We each ordered a piece of one of the freshly baked pies & salad - Chicken & Asparagus and Fillet. We then proceeded to share them between us - neither of us could decide between the 2! Both were delicious, light, fresh & immensely tasty. The side salad was simple but tasty and very fresh too. We couldnt resist spoiling ourselves and shared a platter of the most delicious cakes, lemon meringue, peppermint pie, death by chocolate, fig pie and carrot cake. All were simply awesome. My favourites were the peppermint and lemon meringue! Mouth wateringly delicious! The cappucinos we drank were delicious, not bitter, just perfect. The service was great. I recommend this eatery whole heartedly. And will definitely be ordering their cakes & savoury pies for my birthday lunch at the office next month!!
