Food
Executive Chef Marile van Niekerk has cooked from the Garden Route to Cape Town, and now brings her nomadic approach to this well-priced spot in the Stellenbosch winelands. The first thing you’ll notice is the abundance of vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu: from red quinoa falafel to wild mushroom and chickpea curry. Even the generous burgers come with a vegan black bean option. Then you’ll look further down and the starters of Patagonian calamari or brandied chicken livers peri peri leap out at you. Or perhaps the grilled rib-eye with potato wedges? Or try the free-range duck breast with stir-fried vegetables and soba noodles. And that’s precisely the point of Nomad, where the menu won’t disappoint either vegans or omnivores, both of whom are spoilt for choice. The wood-fired pizzas (with vegan cheese available) are a popular option for a relaxed Sunday lunch, but the kitchen here is capable of so much more.

Drinks
The wine list is comprehensive, with plenty of options from neighbouring Hartenberg Estate and other local producers. Prices are fair, and there’s a good selection by the glass. Craft beer from Stellenbrau is available on tap.

Service
Charming, unpretentious service all-round.

Ambience
There’s a fresh modern feel to this relaxed space. Take your pick between the terrace tables with views over a small dam or indoors around the central fireplace.

And…
The dedicated kids’ menu and secure children’s playground alongside the sheltered terrace makes this an ideal spot for families.

User reviews

  • We visited this restaurant on the strength of the good reviews on this website, but unfortunately the meal was spoilt by the abysmal service. We had a reservation for 7:30pm and when we arrived the restaurant was relatively empty, around 10 occupied tables, served by at least 4 waiters. We were offered the menu/wine list promptly, but then waited for 40minutes for our drinks to arrive and a further 50 mins for the food to arrive. My wife ordered the duck breast with buckwheat noodles and when it arrived wenoticed it was served sans noodles. We brought it to the attention of our waiter who apologised and stated that the kitchen had made a mistake. A separate dish of microwaved noodles was then presented 15 mins later. This is a text book error, surely the dish should be inspected on the pass before being served? A humble Spur burger would never be served without chips, and I expect a R180 duck dish to be served as described on the menu.We asked to speak to the manager, but we were told he had "gone home". However they had problems with our bill and lo and behold the manager appeared from the kitchen to sort out the problem, but did not acknowledge us at all. At the very least we expected a reduction in the bill or a complimentary coffee, but would have accepted a face to face conversation with "management ". I tweeted the restaurant the next day , but still await a response. I'm hoping the restaurant was having "a bad hair day" as a fellow diner also complained about waiting 2 hours for their food to arrive.Their complaints fell on deaf ears, sadly. By the way the food rates 3.5 stars .

  • There was no better experience than tapping the hard crust of a Crème Brûlée and breaking through the beautiful soft cream beneath. Going dairy free I gave up the hope to experience this again. Then I discover the Nomad Restaurant. Just outside Stellenbosh, the Nomad restaurant is set over a freshwater dam. The absolute best Gluten free, Vegan Pizza, bread and Crème Brûlée! But that's not all, your non-vegan family members can also order regular food. I enjoyed this place so much I even went back for a second visit!
