Having established three sister restaurants in Johannesburg, Pigalle Cape Town is one of the larger restaurants having a go at fine dining in the Mother City. The restaurant enjoys a favourable location and a good reputation.

Food
The menu here is kept straightforward and approachable. The starters are familiar favourites. A well-prepared wild mushroom ravioli makes for a pleasant overture, piping hot and served with asparagus spears (one does wonder, though, at their origin in the middle of winter). You can also delve into a retro prawn cocktail, and those who regularly crave scallops will find them featured here, served with a spring onion risotto and hollandaise sauce in a rather rich first course!

The main act can easily be made into an all-shellfish affair. It’s hard not to be tempted by the chef’s langoustines, prepared simply with butter and garlic. In season, lobster features on no less than four of the dishes. But for those who feel a little less extravagant, the line fish of the day is grilled and presented with seasonal vegetables, or you could try the the baby chicken marinated in garlic and chilli and supported ably by a garden salad and fries. As for the carnivorous, the sprinkbok loin, served on basil mashed potato, wilted spinach and a port wine jus is highly recommended.

If you're in for the whole experience, then it would be a sin not to enjoy the safe but pleasant dessert menu offerings. Pavlova, cheesecake, creme brûlée, they're all there!

Drinks
The wine list has been thoughtfully put together. You can opt for a chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon rosé 2000 for a jolly sum of R6200, or keep it local and sample a few well-priced South African wines by the glass. A perfectly handsome wine list.

Service
Staff do well in remaining on the periphery and not being bothersome, even when there’s only one occupied table in the house. It’s all hands on deck throughout the service.

Ambience
Pigalle is highly recommended for dinner as live music is performed here every single night. It’s an elegant but large restaurant that would easily fit in any shopping mall, casino or theatre, but it could also work for a lunch for two on a busy day. Bring your grandmother, your partner or business colleagues – all will be at ease.

And…
It's a good pick for a romantic lunch for two on the terrace in summer, with oysters and bubbly, no less!

  • For me dinning out is much more than the food... I go dinning for the experience and the ambiance. I look for good service, friendly, engaged and knowledgeable staff. I look for well-prepared dishes with fusion of flavours and inviting presentation. I look for love, that food orgasmic feeling. I loved the live band - it felt like someone gave them my personal playlist. The music added a calming soothing sensation. I found the décor fascinating, different yet enchanting... I had the Line Fish, Nacional, it melted in my mouth, magical.  I would however recommend that it gets served in pasta kind of dishing plate, because it was difficult to enjoy the sauce from a flat plate. My sister had the lamb shank, a simple 10/10.EXCELLENCE. The lamb shank was succulent; falling off the bone with perfect, aromatic and soulful flavours. My friend had the most well prepared rib eye steak, it was juicy, tender and nicely spiced. Pigalle serves beautiful, crunchy, well flavoured veggies and the portions are huge. It really is worth visiting.I got all I was looking for... a magical night, a journey of food and an amazing experience.

  • I have visited Pigalle many times over the last 10 years. Haven't been there in a couple years, went 2 weeks ago, couldn't eat the lam cutlets- the knife couldn't cut through them and the teeth couldn't chew them. Two weeks later, last night I ordered prime rib medium rare. Same situation. It was my birthday celebration and I invited 5 guests. Very disappointing. I'm done with Pigalle. A huge bill and an empty stomach.

  • From our very first date night, to the many that followed, and eventually even celebrating our wedding reception at this awesome establishment, I only have good words to share about Pigalle! I fell in love with the rich, warm, luxurious decor of this restaurant the first time I went, and was only further impressed by the beautifully plated, absolutely mouth watering dishes that followed. Perhaps best of all though, is the fantastic, eloquent, friendly and extremely attentive service. Five star dining experience, but without a hint of pretentiousness! It's reminiscent of the old Hollywood jazz lounge scene, which is such a rarity in today's restaurant market. I would recommend Pigalle over and over again. Truly a gem!

  • Decadence and elegance can best describe Pigalle in the heart of Green Point. I've been privileged to dine here on three occasions for two staff functions and my sister in laws 21st and was never disappointed. Service is key to Pigalle's success and from the moment you enter to the time your leave, the waiter is on your beck and call from placing napkins on your lap, refilling your glasses to taking your orders in a timeous manner. On all three occasions we had an A-la-carter menu offering seafood, chicken and meat lovers a variety of options to satisfy any pallette. Meals that stood out for me was mussels in a creamy sauce with fresh rolls, Fillet pan fried perfectly with a red wine jus topped with mushroom sauce accompanied by roast vegetables and fries, while a trio of desserts is always a good choice from chocolate mousse, creme brulee to cigars and ice cream. To cap off the evening, a live jazz band lead by legendary trumpeter Ian Smith will ensure you burn those extra calories after your delicious feast

  • Although not a frequent diner at Pigalle, it was once one of my absolute favourite restaurants. I always left there beaming from ear to ear but I am sad to say I will not return.

I had completely forgotten that I have been expecting a call from them to resolve a problem I had when dining there some months back now. The reviews on this website just jogged my memory. We had dinner at Pigalle late one evening and we did not eat much as we had a heavy lunch. I left half of my duck on my plate and requested a doggy-bag. My partner just nibbled on the outer part of his meat. The next morning when I checked the doggy-bag I found that my duck was missing and my parter's meat was almost entirely raw.

I called Pigalle the very next day and they were closed but whomever answered the phone promised me that someone would return my call in the week. After hearing nothing for a week I called again and was again assured that someone would call me in the week... Well, I'm still waiting.

A restaurant with an excellent reputation like Pigalle's would do good to deliver the same level of service to customers after they walk out the doors or they may never return.

  • We were turned away at the door for not meeting the 'dress code'. My partner was wearing cut off pants, though not in an informal style. I had booked for a date night and driven far to come. No one told me on the phone that there was a dress code, I didn't see it on the website or here on Eat Out. There was only one other table at the restaurant but the hostess wouldn't let us in. Our greeting was rude and we were treated poorly. Very pretentious and inhospitable. I won't be going back.

  • Perfect! My partner and I went for date night and it is so fantastic. I bought a groupon voucher and thought that we would be treated like aliens, this happened on our last groupon voucher but alas our waitress was so good and explained everything so beautifully, we opted for the two sauces suggested, which complimented the prawns and crayfish perfectly. The seafood platter was good quality seafood and cooked perfectly too. Pigalle is a little expensive for everyday eating out hence the groupon but I will be back, specials or not. The atmosphere feels a little holiday resorty but they are trying hard to get a younger crowd. I loved it. Thank you Pigalle xx

  • So i was looking for a vibey place to go for dinner with my fiancee. A fread of mine recomended Pigalle. Nothing prepared me for the 5star treatment. We felt royal. The Ambience was out of this world, the band played till midnight and the service was fantastic. The waiter recomended from the sherry to warm us up the wine, the lobster thermidore was devine. Praise, man you made our day. Thank you very much for the great service and the good time. But next time just let us at least have a glass of tap water.

  • Will never go back. Food was good. After spending more than R500 per person on food and wine, they would not serve us 1 glass of water. Its not as if we werent spending money. Our table spent over R2500.00. The show was like a bad attempt of a high school dance show and half of it was hidden as we could not see (and our table was very near the front). For the same price Madame Zingara is much better value and so much more fun. No one at our table will be returning.

  • First off, the good, Great ambience and fantastic food. The general service is very good - with different waiters helping to keep your glass filled etc. The bad, Our waiter, David, was a complete rip-off. Brought garlic bread to the table, which we didnt ask for - and charged us for it. Kept bringing and opening bottles of still water which we didnt ask for. So, the bill included a few surprises. He showed no reaction when I complained. It is down right fraudulent and spoiled an otherwise great evening. Would I go again? Definitely not.

  • Celebrated my 30th birthday with 20 guests in July 2009. What an awesome experience! The waiter dedicated to our table was attentive and did not get a single order incorrect all night. Glasses were kept topped up at all times. The band was great, atmosphere was electric and my guests did not want to leave and end our awesome experience! It was definitely worth flying to Cape Town for!

  • I decided to celebrate my 30th birthday at Pigalle as I believe this is the perfect place to celebrate any occasion. Once again I was right. We got a beautiful, round table, right in the middle of the main area. The interior and setting of the restaurant is simply stunning. Then the service... just marvelous. Alex, our waiter was amazing with his knowledge, flair, good timing and very professional way of serving. The food was absolutely exsquisite! I highly recommend oysters - you wont find better ones in Cape Town. Every one of the guests enjoyed their starters. The main course was the winner... the Pigalle Platter, a great selection of shell fish; Norwegian Salmon with basil mash, fantastic slow cooked duck with cherries and my husbands winner - Beef Fillet with mustard mash and wilted spinach. The food was beautifuly presented, with a wonderful flavours and textures. Did I mention the jazz band? They played really great tunes and even on Tuesday night the place wasnt that full, they created a really great vibe and soon the guests were jamming on the dance floor. Big thanks to the owner, Victor- his charm and passion for Pigalle made this evening extra special. I highly recommend Pigalle to anybody. You wont regret it. After 5 years Pigalle is still top in town.

  • My Girlfriend and I were fortunate enough to dine at Pigalle Green Point on Saturday the 24th Jan 09. It wasnt our first time, and we were both so pleased to see their all round standards were still so high. From the moment you are met at the door and ushered to your table or to the bar, you can feel you are in for an absolute magical evening. Our waiter Daniel, was informative, attentive yet not obtrusive. And his knowledge of the dishes on the menu was very impressive. We had the Lobster Ravioli and the Salmon for Starters and would recommend both. For mains we shared the seafood platter for two, It was truly delicious..It would be an insult if we didnt share our experience with you, So thank you to all at Pigalle for another evening we wont be forgetting.

  • We recently had a fab evening here. Service was great, the food very good and the atmosphere was brilliant. There were a nice mix of customers from young to mid to older. The music was great too, I could dance and still talk to my husband, I really enjoyed my birthday meal there. My brother did warn us that the last time he was there the service wasnt great, so my husband phoned in advance and told them this......needless to say they were forewarned!

  • Discussing Pigalle with visitors over dinner last night reminded me of the night i took 8 people there for a birthday celebration. I personally visited to book several weeks in advance. As the first person on the book for that day I asked that they be sure to allocate cubicle 9. I was assured this was noted. and I asked for the table ot be noted whilst I as there. They gave that table away and placed us right near the entrance and right at the stairs where everyone that passed brushed against your chair. Service was diabolical. We finished our meal and settled the bill. As we were about to leave a waiter tripped and hurled a tray of coffee at our birthday girl. Scalded with ruined suit she went to the loo to try and clean up. On her return she asked for a glass of water. We were told well have to re-open your bill as we do not serve free water. The silk suit was worth 10 times the bill and was never fixed. The next day the manager was totally unsympathetic. I put off everyone that mentions the place.

  • Friends of mine always talk about this restaurant as the best, so 8 of us went to Cape Town and we booked a table there on Saturday 12th.Waiters name was Johny, and I can tell you there was no service for us that night. We waited 30 min or longer for the starter coktails while waiting for our other friends to arrive, so I had to ask if they still remember the drinks, which they forgot.... Somehow the table next to us was more important to the waiter, maybe he thought hed get a better tip, I really dont know. Anyway after I complained to the floor manager, we got the menus and were toled few specials by a manager. When the time came to pay and tip , we all decided we are going to tip for the service weve recived, which I said was nothing, actually. Anyway we did leave a small tip, which wasn.t too small, so when the waiter was counting the money he was badly commenting to us about the tip. Look , food was good, I can say nothing bad, but the service was really bad.And I know it doesnt happen there often, but it spoiled the whole evening for us. 1 more thing, sole was served with green peas and mash, that was not the class of garnish for the Pigalle, please have a look at that plating, and plating for kingklip as well, too simple.

The service was phenomenal - if we thought it, they brought it ....and all without intruding upon our splendid evening. We absolutely got lost in time, like we were at the Cotton Club. The food was sensational - I have never had seafood so fresh. Thank you guys.
