Food
Possum’s has become renowned for adventurous salad. The plate offered for the table easily sustains more than two diners. With all the usual leaves present, it contains a few hidden but welcome surprises in the form of strawberries, Cape gooseberries, sweet potato, avocado and beetroot (R58).

The Portuguese rump espatada with a cabernet and pear reduction and frites will certainly keep the meat lovers well satisfied (R130). The beef fillet with porcini mushroom sauce is equally delicious (R135), and be sure to order extra frites to mop up that sauce – the calories are well worth it.

The Portuguese sardines (R110) and mussels in a tomato and wine broth (R70) looked and smelt superb as they headed to a nearby table.

As for dessert, ask for a slice of the red velvet cheesecake: it’s smooth, creamy and moreish. One slice is more than enough to share, especially after all those meaty delights.

Drinks
There's a small but concise wine list, with favourites such as Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir. You’ll also find a few beers and spirits on offer.

Service
It’s a small restaurant, where it's always easy to get the attention of a waiter. Staff members are attentive and knowledgeable. The menu is written on a chalkboard, which might leave you feeling a bit like an intruder if you have to have to read it over another patron’s shoulder.

Ambience
Possum’s, situated in what used to be a much-loved second-hand furniture shop, has held onto some of that charm, with plates hanging on the wall as well as artwork for sale. A cluster of mismatched décor offers a relaxed and intimate dining experience. Receiving plenty of winter sunshine, it makes for a great lunch spot.

And…
As the name suggests, Possum’s is more than a simple eatery, it also acts as a deli, with numerous products on offer to buy for home enjoyment.

Possums is one of Joburg's special restaurants which is owner run and the menu is interesting and evolving. Their pork belly and caesar salad are some of the best in the city. Their wine selection is also remarkable.
  • One of Joburg’s special owner-run restaurants. The interesting menu keeps evolving, but their pork belly and Caesar salad versions are some of the best in the city; their wine selection is also remarkable. A good spot for a vibey night on a weekend. The décor is colourful and gloriously cluttered. (EO mag 2014)
  • Food
Possum’s has quickly become a firm favourite with diners on this busy strip, thanks to its emphasis on fresh produce and seasonal ingredients. There’s a small menu which changes regularly, but try one of the signature dishes, a homemade beef patty with a hint of curry spices served with homemade onion marmalade and pommes frites. The prawn pasta has both Italian and Thai influences, while the seared salmon is cooked perfectly. Desserts include wonderful ice-creams including one made from rose water.

    Wine
Expect some unusual local wines, as well as some excellent Aussie and New Zealand offerings.

    Service
    Fast and uber-friendly.

    Ambience
Colourful and gloriously cluttered, with plenty of food items to buy and take home with you.

    And...
They do great breakfasts for the perfect start to the day. (JW, October 2012)

  • My husband and I decided to have a celebratory lunch at Possum's this past weekend, celebrating our 6 month anniversary. Our experience, however, did not live up to the hype. I ordered the Possum's fillet special, but five minutes after placing the order, our waitron informed me they did not have any fillets and so I had to change my order. I then ordered the Parmesan crusted chicken schnitzel, when my food arrived, it was less than appealing. The Parmesan crust was completely black and I could smell it was beyond burnt. After just one mouthful, I discovered a bone and sinew in my chicken. Not only that, but the skin was still on the chicken. I ordered my dish with pommes frite, assuming they would be hand cut French fries, instead, I received McCain frozen chips. I wanted to make a complaint to the manager, however there was no manager in sight. When explaining my displeasure to the waitron, he responded, saying that the schnitzel was made from the thigh of the chicken that is why the skin was still on and why I found bones. A disappointing experience to say the least.

  • An amazing dinner experience which had it all. Remarkable service from the beginning to the very end by the great Fatima. The atmosphere intimate, cosy, you feel immediately that this place will warm you. The food, especially the Springbok sirloin, just to die for!
Highly recommended and on of my absolute favorites in town!
Thank you for a wonderful evening!

  • Lovely evening! We had a table of 11 there was an issue with one of the dishes and the way it was handled was excellent, followed up with a phone call from the owner the next day. I was super impressed at the proactive approach and will continue to support them!

  • I saw Possum's listed in the Eat Out Magazine, and thought it looked different and interesting - one gets tired of the same old shopping centre restaurants. 6 of us went for dinner - the food was fabulous - between us we had lamb shank, fillet, a burger, calamari, pork loin, various desserts and cheese dessert platter - all the plates were all wiped clean! The atmosphere is relaxed and easy, the decor is eclectic and cosy. The service was good for a busy Saturday evening - the place was full. Overall a very pleasant dining experience - I would recommend a visit.

  • What a great evening at this amazing bistro. The service was excellent and our waiter, Fatima, was extremely knowledgeable. We had the exotic mushrooms for starter, clean spot on flavours! For mains we ordered the stuffed lamb rack and the fillet with poached pear and gorgonzola sauce – both dishes were exquisite. This was my first time there, but definitely not the last. Thank you for a beautiful evening!

  • I always wanted to try Possum's and was then quite disappointed. We wanted to sit at an empty table inside and were told that we couldn't because they needed to set up for a private function, by the time the 2 of us had left no set up had begun. The ambience is very nice but I cannot say that the food was fantastic at all.

  • What a night out - fab food, excellent wine, and a magnificent ambience. Possum's is a special unique place, there pate is worth traveling for on a daily basis alone but all our meals were all wonderful - duck breast a must here! Then to top it all off they have the world's best waiter - a knowledgeable guy who will enlighten you all night about wine and food! My wife and I have travelled the world and yet we are so
lucky to have found this gem! Thanks for a wonderful evening!

  • A room with some fancy faux French bistro decor does not amount to a good restaurant. Possums' food is average at best and the service is more akin to a Karoo petrol station at 2am - lacking.
Where on earth does a restaurant have a dog loitering around the inside amongst the tables and sleeping next to the kitchen? The dog may bre cute or even charming but really!
In my view the ambience is its only saviour, that is if you value ambience over decent food and service. Better places to frequent within a 5 minute walk.

  • Great food and ambience, especially for a Saturday night out with friends. Food was sublime - Caesar salad to start that I could eat at least once a week, and really good burgers. Highly recommended. Food great, service excellent (thanks Karen) and ambience also great.

  • On my last trip to Johannesburg, I was fortunate enough to be treated to a meal at Possum's. We received great service, four incredible courses, which included one of the most exceptional lamb shanks I've had to date and a great selection of imported wines chosen for us by our waiter. I was really impressed and will be returning on my next trip to Parkhurst.

  • We had the most disgusting experience at Possum's last night. That morning I had phoned and made a reservation for 9, but more friends wanted to join us and we decided it would be better if they rather booked a separate table and so I reduced our reservation to 5 people. From the moment I walked in I was given attitude over the booking changes by the man that seated us. At some point a blonde woman came up to us to explain the menu, however she was unable to take our order as she was clearly intoxicated. I'm not sure if she was the owner or manager. The waitress came and took our order. The food arrived and we started eating when suddenly this woman appeared at the table again and started harassing us about the booking being changed. She was extremely rude and aggressive, stating that she ran a very busy shop and that she doesn't like "being messed around" (using a harsher word than that). She was clearly intoxicated and unreasonable. We decided to get up and leave the restaurant, at which stage she tried to detain one of my friends against his will. When he insisted on leaving, she screamed after him. Needless to say, we will never consider going to Possum's again.

  • The food was fab and the ambience even better! I was just a little surprised by the service after reading the rave reviews on this page. But I'd like to think last night was an unusual one. Our waiter went missing in the middle of service. Only once we had flagged down a different waiter, were we told rather sheepishly that our original waiter would "no longer be with us". There was an untidy scurry to take our dessert order and huge confusion about our bill but thankfully Thoko (our "new" waitress) was eventually able to pick up the slack with the utmost aplomb. Thanks to her we will definitely be back. But just a note to the owner - in an unusual situation like that, just pop by the affected tables and inform the clientele.

  • I'm with Hendre and his review - we had a reunion dinner with a colleague from the UK - great service from Miles, and regular check-ins from the owner. Interesting menu, good food. But the clincher is the setting, the candles, the fresh flowers on the tables, the art on the walls - what a memorable evening!

  • Bad service leaves a bad taste in our mouths, we had breakfast at Possum's a few days ago and while the food was good, the poor service has put us off, Our waitress made a mistake with our order and although she was apologetic about it, when we pointed the mistake out to the person who looked as if they were in charge, they brushed it off. Here is what we would have liked, 1. Once the waitress was aware of the mistake, it would have been great if she had pointed it out the manager. 2. When the manager was aware of the situation, we would have liked it if they would have tried to rescue the situation by offering alternatives and not simply blaming the waitress - especially as we don't believe it was fully her fault. 3. An offer of not charging us for the mistake or offering a discount or at least an apology from the managing staff would have been nice.

  • Although I mentioned that I am allergic to onion at ordering, both my dishes had plenty of onion. When I made the waitress aware of this, no apologies were received while answers like we thought it was only for the main course and our dishes are made like this, etc. were given. The manager was far too busy talking with friends not giving any attention to our table. Sorry, but extremely disappointed.
