Food
Burgers are the driving passion here. The philosophy behind the meat is framed by noble aspirations of ethical sourcing, environmentally conscious practises and affiliating with a reputable local supplier. The menu boasts hand-minced patties that are made with cows that were 100% grass-fed and routine antibiotic free. And it’s not all lip service. The burgers really do taste that good.

The menu sets expectations high enough that only a burger towering with toppings beneath a thick, juicy, flavoursome patty can meet. And it does. You can choose to build your own burger, offered choices of bases – a roll, no roll or the self-proclaimed Hipster-version: a Portobello mushroom serving as a bun. Beef, lamb, ostrich, chicken or veg are the protein options, and the toppings and sauces are a veritable rainbow of variety. From cheddar to bacon jam and interesting chilli chocolate, all toppings are covered. There are also many flavoured mayos to choose from, which pair well with the side options of potato or zucchini fries of various cuts, breaded or fried.

If DIY is not your thing, you could go for the Republik Edition 6.0, which comes with a beef patty and is topped with bacon, cheesy risotto and drizzled with chilli-chocolate sauce. It sounds crazy and it is. Crazy delicious! The Republik Bunny Burger – “for all the Durban ous”, as the menu cheekily points out – is a lamb patty topped with potato curry and a papadum.

A lot of the menu options read as if inspired by hangovers. The mishmash of crazy combinations taste good and seem to satisfy a craving you didn’t know you had. This includes the deep-fried Bar-One bites, which make for a welcome departure from the usual ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Drinks
It’s a craft beer bar so the menu offers local craft beers, bottled and on tap, as well as some cider varieties. Wine comes by the glass, carafe or bottle. And there’s an extensive gin list, of local and international origin. The milkshakes are liquid desserts and extend from the conservative vanilla or Bar One to the milk tart, popcorn or the Sowetan Plumber (Nutella, Oreos and coffee). If you need a chocolate fix, you need the Because Chocolate milkshake, a trifecta of Nutella, brownie and Oreos, and comes served with a chocolate.

Service
Rapid and attentive service by friendly waiters.

Ambience
The market is a younger, trend-setting crowd, and the menu and its ethos caters to it. It’s laid-back and casual, with a wraparound open deck area and picnic tables, creating a social and relaxed atmosphere.

And…
There are open mic nights and comedy evenings hosted regularly, which are worth popping into.

    Food
Indulge in the ultimate gourmet burger experience at this popular social spot.

The burgers take centre stage on the menu: build your own burger from a trio of base burgers and get creative with your taste buds. Add a juicy beef, lamb or chicken patty to any one of the base burgers then choose from the mouth watering sauce selection from creamy bourbon mushroom, rich black pepper or traditional cheese and barbecue. For a carb-free option try the Hipster burger, served on a grilled garlic infused portobello mushroom accompanied by battered zucchini fries topped with honey and mustard aioli.

From the signature burger selection, the Republik 4.0 sports a 180g free range beef patty, crowned with creamy camembert cheese, crunchy deep fried parma ham, and drizzled with a delicious fig and rosemary sauce. The shoe string fries are a great addition to the meal, however they can be messy to eat. The southern fried chicken burger wasn’t a favourite as it was slightly burnt and over cooked, which gave a bitter aftertaste to the dish. For a fancier treat, try the French dip sandwich, slow cooked roasted beef with caramelised onions served with sweet potato straws.

Tuck in to desserts like the deep fried Bar One bites, served with vanilla ice cream or a classic Peppermint Crisp tart. On the flip side the gosh brownies and ice cream were disappointing in taste and presentation, especially for the price.

    Drinks
Enjoy happy hour with the extensive selection of beers, ciders, red and white wines. The milkshake combinations are decadent, try the coffee and condensed milk or the unique avo and vanilla for something different.

    Service
The hostess was lovely and friendly at the entrance however, our table felt unattended to at times. A bit of confusion surrounded the orders taken.

    Ambience
Fun, vibey atmosphere especially on Fridays and Saturdays, décor is trendy and urban.

    And…
The food philosophy is great, through the motto of ‘For the People’, they are a socially responsible and an environmentally sustainable business, encouraging everyone to do the same.

  • You often hear of these new places to go to and most of the time when you try them they disappoint. It was a Friday night and I worked late, I didn't eat the whole day because I had heard so many good things about republik. Needless to say we walked in. To a vibe which made us not wanting to leave. From young kids, to families, to people having date night's, to birthdays being celebrated upstairs with awesome music. We got greeted by every single staff member who walked past us and the menus arrived. We ordered cooperberg my favourite cider. It then came to ordering mains. As much as I wanted to order everything on the menu I had to make a decision. I ordered the burger without a bun. Beef to be exact, crispy bacon, caramelized onions and a side of deep fried baby marrow chips. The food arrived in about ten minutes, my tummy didn't even have time to grumble. It was by far the juiciest and tastiest burger I have ever tasted. My stomach was full and my heart complete. Desert we had the deep fried bar one. I'm not sure If they still serve it but gosh. It was definitely made with love. I will definitely be back and I honestly recommend everyone to go and try their burgers!

  • Amazing burgers with the best toppings, I would suggest the Republik burger - topped with camembert cheese, deep fried parma ham and with fig and rosemary sauce. All the burgers are not the norm, they are unusual and made to perfection.
