Critic's review

A great venue for group celebrations and viewing mesmerising sunsets. It’s comfortable and relaxed, so it can cater for kids during daytime as well as after-work drinks. Stand-out dishes: flat breads and dips and the tarte flambée with crème fraîche, smoked pork lardons, caramelised onions and gruyère. (EO mag 2014)

Mediterranean-inspired food is the name of the game at this vibey seaside eatery. Watch the sun set and nibble on a vast array of tapas like lamb koftas, halloumi and patatas bravas. Mains are hearty with paella or seared tuna being good choices. There’s a lot to choose from and lighter meals like salads and pastas, or try the flat breads with interesting toppings (prawn and fennel or rosemary lamb mince). Brunches are also popular with yummy egg Benedict or French Toast with fresh fruit. Try the spicy Lebanese shakshouka for something different.

    Wine
There’s a well-curated wine list with some interesting local and imported bubbly.

    Service
This is a hot spot so be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy periods. Waiters are professional and obliging.

    Ambience
The place to be is the outside deck with views of the Mouille Point lighthouse and promenade. Inside is a medley of blues with seating on various levels.

    And...
It’s the ideal spot to revive your spirits after a walk on the promenade or nearby Green Point Urban Park. (LvA, October 2012)

  • Came past Sotana on Saturday afternoon after a lovely walk on the Promenade and I was beyond delighted! I had no idea what I felt like and with the array of tapas choices I was spoilt for choice! Quality and quantity were just perfect and was left wanting more. I will be back to tick off the next few items on the tapas menu.

  • The maitre de at reception needs a personality adjustment. Sunday, 1 May - looked to have a cup of coffee - two empty tables - made every possible excuse not to host us. Went and had coffee round the corner - returned, two tables still vacant. She honestly needs to reassess her role. I trust you don't do this for a living as you have no idea what your role entails and how to treat people!

  • I've had breakfast and lunch at Sontano quite a few times and I always find it great. Lovely location next to the ocean. Interesting menu of sushi and Mediterranean-style food. Try the Paella or Moules-frites for a special treat. The drinks list is decent and the coffee is good. On Fridays and Sundays they normally have live music.

  • Really good food and good value, spoiled by indifferent and unskilled service. I had finished starters and mains before my companion's starters arrived. The reason? We had ordered items from different kitchens! Silly us. So that you too don't make the same mistake, mixing the sushi and the regular menu is a recipe for disaster.

  • Beautiful setting, however one waiter for a busy terrace for lunch does not give the greatest service. But the disappointment came with the salads, I got a very small beetroot salad and my friend got the standard green and parmesan shaving one. In asking for bread, we were advised we have to order and pay for it, we asked for rosemary bread and once it came to the table, it was cold with white streaks indicating a bad defrosting job. Needless to say we returned the bread. No apologies from the waiter and no sign of management. We did enjoy the small salads and got 2 glasses of wine and 1 cappuccino. The bill with the tip was R210 which is far from good value for money, even with the setting.

  • Just tried Sotano (again after a disastrous visit 6 months ago). This time it was for Sunday brunch. The wonderful sunny weather was part of a very pleasant experience, but also food, service and atmosphere. The decor is very important to me, and Sotano has managed to create a really cool, yet comfy spot. And the gorgeous views are a bonus. We all had eggs of different shapes and taste. All good. As well as the coffee. Bread could be more interesting and they are a bit not so gnereous with the greens. But all in all a perfect week end spot.

  • The service needs to relooked at...The waiters were all over the place and there wasn't a dedicated waiter for our table. We were served by anyone who walked across our table, and at times, no one came to pick up our plates when we were done with the food. The whole time, we needed to call service to get things done. It's a good place to chill but they just need to notch up their quality of service a bit more!

  • Bad service. Two managers standing around and adding no value whatsoever. Slow service by two waiters. No suggestions or menu explanations. One main course we wanted was not available (which would have been okay if advised before chosing), no bread before the meal. Not going there again

  • Had lunch last Wednesday and ordered a sandwich with grilled prawns and avo. Lovely ingredients, but it was completly soaked in cocktail sauce. Even the bread was swimming in the sauce, which ruined it completly.

  • I strongly suggest avoiding this restaurant. Staff not properly trained, from the waitron right up to the very inexeperienced manager. We arrived at 8.30pm, ordered our meal (after battling to get the drinks we ordered) by 9pm, received our food (not as described on the menu) only at 10pm and by 10.15pm we had one member of staff sweeping the floor less than a metre from us, whilst another was spraying cleaning material on the table next to us...the kitchen was closing at 11pm you see, so they had to get going! Needless to say, we didnt bother staying for dessert. We did, however, get 2 out 3 meals on the house - they missed the point completely.

  • It started out promising, nice terrace, friendly waiters and interesting menu. But, all that faded as we went along. Food was ok, but nothing to write home about. The most important reason for this disappointing visit was the endless waiting for our food. Dont go here if youre in a hurry, it takes forever.

  • I absolutely love this place. The food is incomparably delicious and of great quality. Its reasonably priced, the wine is fantastic, the service is unparalelled and the setting is simply beautiful. Its without a doubt my new favourite spot in Cape Town.

  • This was my 3rd visit to Sotano. As a Caveau regular, I was disappointed with the meal. Average food (admittedly with some highlights) and appalling service. In my opinion, the Caveau model has always been premium-priced, but worth it based on quality of product and service. This was premium-priced without the delivery of either. Disappointed!

  • What a treat - this place has it all . Great food , great location , friendly and efficient staff. While the prices may be leaning towards the higher side, only the best ingredients are used - as a foodie , I appreciate this. Being a cheese lover, the locally produced, hand made borato mozzerella (a serving is a whole ball , not the usual few slices) is INCREDIBLE, and the paella far more than delicious. Cant wait to try the rest of the menu.

  • Different restaurant, same rip off. A bottle of Ken Forrester Petit chenin blanc @ R139? I can by that at Getwine for R30!! A two course meal at La Boheme is R110, here I got a very small paella for R120! We had to ask the waiter 3 times for a glass of ice. I miss the Bravo summer salad...

  • The venue is superb and beautifully decorated. The food was average and the coffee undrinkable. Its likely it will draw a crowd that is more social than food savvy. I would recommend they dont stop serving brunch at 11 and force the lunch menu on the weekend crowd looking for a good brunch.

  • Valued Restaurant friends, this place is not your dream place. The food was terribly expensive. No value for money. The food was not good, the pita had no chicken inside, the portions were tiny I really feel like we were cheated. This is not a good way to start I visited the manager he apologized but did not bother to take my details. There were 4 of us for dinner we all felt equally disappointed. I personally will visit them perhaps for a drink but no more than that You guys have a long way to go!
