Food
A special place to do breakfast or brunch in the winelands. Enjoy a signature stable groom’s breakfast of artisanal meats, cheeses, preserves and pickles; eggs Benedict, royal or Florentine – with buttery croissants and freshly baked buttermilk scones from the bakery on the side. A modern lunch menu caters for light meals with really good sandwiches – try rare roast beef, gruyere and caramelised onions or the Vergelegen Club – and excellent sirloin burgers served with hand-cut fries and onion rings on a brioche bun.

The ingredients, some sourced from the estate’s orchards and gardens, are fresh, with the accent on robust country Provençal flavours, simplicity of preparation and attractive plating. Heartier appetites should try out one of the stone oven pizzas (vegetarians will enjoy the thyme roasted Portobello mushroom and butternut pizza with black truffle oil).

A contemporary bistro spin is particularly evident in the mains selection, with authentic versions of classic cassoulet, risotto, confit of duck in a sherry jus, bouillabaisse and grills – all served with richly flavoured French reductions and sauces. The little brother of Camphors – the fine dining restaurant at Vergelegen– Stables over-delivers on all fronts.

Drinks
A good selection of good coffee, hot chocolate and teas. The sommelier will advise on the well-priced selection of all Vergelegen wines by glass and bottle – including rare reserve and vintage wines.

Service
Smart and attentive with warm winelands hospitality on the side.

Ambience
Chic but family-friendly, with great views of gardens from a sunny contemporary interior in the atmospheric old stables of this grand old wine estate.

And…
There's a special “Little VIPS” menu for breakfast and lunch featuring meals like mac and cheese and cheeseburgers. There's also a playground to keep the kids happily occupied.

    Food
The food at Stables is not overly complicated, flavourful and well thought through. This is a perfect spot for a lazy breakfast with classics such as Eggs Royal comprising poached eggs and salmon on an English muffin, topped with Hollandaise sauce, or perhaps a portion of French toast (sweet or savoury). The full Deluxe breakfast comes with all the trimmings of a traditional breakfast. Lunch options include artisanal cheese and preservers, sandwiches, salads, food from the grill or hearty country fare such as confit duck, oxtail Provençal and even bouillabaisse. Stables also offers stone oven pizzas and caters for the little ones with a special kiddies menu. Dessert temptations such as berry parfait or chocolate tart will send you home with good memories to cherish.

    Drinks
The wine list includes only estate wines, with some of them available by the class.

    Service
Staff are well trained, showing attention to detail, right from the point of entry, with a warm welcome at reception. On realising that this was our first visit, the well-informed waitress took care to point out the places of interest on the farm and made us feel special and well looked after.

    Ambience
A winning combination of beautifully designed furniture, solid wood tables and a lovely view over the Helderberg mountains. The atmosphere is relaxed, with the joyful sounds of kids enjoying themselves adding to the experience.

    And…
There are so many extra’s to experience that you can plan a full day visit to Vergelegen – there’s the option of a library visit, manor house visit, children’s play area, wine tasting, camphor tree walk, beautiful gardens, vine maze walk, deli and baked items for sale as well as other take-home reminders.

  • This bistro-style restaurant on the historic Vergelegen Estate is very accommodating to families. Beautiful views, wine by the glass and delightful service make it perfect for lingering lunches. There’s space for children to play outside and interiors are airy and spacious, the walls adorned with local artists’ works. Great burgers, pizzas and steaks served on boards. (EO mag 2014)
  • Food
As befits a venue located at a popular tourist attraction – and an extremely beautiful one at that – the food is unfussy. Contemporary country casual is their choice of description and it hits the nail on the head. Breakfast runs the full gamut from eggs in all carnations and muesli for the roughage brigade to make-your-own smoothies with a long list of options to choose from. For the many tourists wanting to save their appetites for a big evening meal there’s an extensive range of sandwiches and salads, along with excellent crispy, thin-based pizzas and a few pastas. A word of warning, however, the tomato passata is disconcertingly sweet and overwhelmed both spicy chorizo and Serrano ham in the pasta. Not even tangy caper berries could cut the sweetness! A Caesar salad offers chicken and prawn as the two alternatives. While flavourful, courtesy of the perfectly boiled egg, crunchy lettuce leaves and crispy bacon bits, the dressing could be a tad more generous and assertive in taste, and more than one token round of toast serving as the crouton would not go amiss. But there are enough options for those who have worked up an appetite while wine tasting: grilled line fish of the day or a roasted chicken supreme were popular items under the chef’s choice section, while for real trenchermen there’s the plank steak – a 24-day aged sirloin, pepper-crusted beef fillet, lamb sosatie or salmon steak. There’s an abbreviated dessert menu with two fruity options, the ubiquitous crème brûlée and chocolate pudding – in this case a Venetian torte – and a vineyard cheese platter.

    Wine
They offer Vergelegen wines only, but at one of South Africa’s top wine estates that’s no hardship. There’s a good spread of grape varietals and blends as well as price points. Wines are available by the glass or bottle, including their premium reserve offerings. The only exception is their bubbly: it’s a bottle or nothing!

    Service
The staff are warm and friendly, while still eminently professional. They are happy to venture opinions and describe menu items and preparation methods.

    Ambience
The ambience is invitingly laid back and ideal for a tea with mum or a long convivial lunch with mates. The surroundings are airy with abundant natural light and beautiful mountain vistas streaming in from all angles. Although grown up and beautifully contemporary with bold colour highlights and modern artwork, it’s also the kind of place where children are free to run barefoot on the grass outside, returning for a few quick bites and tales of having seen a squirrel or hadeda.

    And...
A section of one wall is given over to shelves full of Vergelegen goodies like home-baked biscuits, cordials and bright napkins or even pencils and notebooks as mementos or gifts for friends back home. (Fiona McDonald, April 2012)

  • I was really fortunate yesterday to change my lunch booking for 18 to Stables. What a brilliant choice! The delightful hostess opened the side room to accommodate us. (which was good for the other diners, because they were a very noisy group). She quickly drew up and printed out a set menu at a very reasonable rate for the adults - 13, and the kids were allowed their own choices which all came out very promptly so they could eat and then enjoy the play area in the lovely weather. I had an extremely discerning group and they really enjoyed the meal, the wines, the ambiance and declared it one of the highlights of the trip to Cape Town. So, thank you all at Stables - you made me look good!

  • Many thanks for a wonderful, delicious breakfast. My eight guests loved it as much as I did. Our charming waitress kept the champagne flowing, and went out of her way to keep everyone happy. My dessert was presented with a birthday greeting in chocolate, and the waitress sang to me like and angel! How did the staff know it was my birthday?
I will be back soon - would love to bring my grandson as he will enjoy the beautiful kiddies' play-park.

  • It is a rare thing these days to get a pefect experience at a restaurant. I am made to feel important at Stables from the moment I arrive...The food was exquisite! They served exactly what I asked for (am a little fussy about mushrooms) and got absolutely excellent service in a gorgeous setting! What more can one ask for? Thank you so much for making my lunch wonderful. I will certainly be back...

  • We had the best experience at the Stables today. We did not have a reservation; the 2 lady managers made a plan for us and accommodated us. The food was of a very high standard and the service was perfect. Loved every minute! Thanks for giving us the best day!

  • Very poor and disappointing lunch. Service with an attitude and from the freezer, McDonalds fries, with spur onion rings, in a tiny bowl, over salted, and being asked when we are leaving as the next guests are here for the table, despite waiting an age to get food. Oh sorry, they ran out of burger buns, but by the time the burgers arrived they had managed to bake an entire batch of burger buns from scratch, that is how long our service took! I also hate having hot food served to me on a wooden chopping board. And to add insult to injury, we had to pay to enter Vergelegan despite having a lunch reservation. No such thing as a safe play park for children, it is tucked out the way round the corner, so you can't watch from your table and there is also a large water feature running between the venue and along the side of the play area. The atmosphere is shocking due to staff running around like headless chickens, despite there being more than enough of them for the small amount of covers. I would not recommend this venue to anyone.

  • Went for lunch, unfortunately! Bad choice of restaurant. Food for 2 took over an hour. Arrived cold and steak overcooked and dry, waitress untrained and unprofessional. Don't they know that food doesn't get served on bread-boards anymore? Its unhygienic! Just the worst meal I ever had. And we still had to pay to get in! Service, food and ambience rating - null! I see they don't have a "0" review rating so had to tick "1" but they don't even deserve that.

  • Truely don't even bother. Nice scenary but that's bout it. Took mom there for her birthday, attitude and welcome from staff was attrocious. Chicken served raw, chips cold, no follow up from manager, whoever he/she was.

  • Truely one of the worst experiences ever. Pricing is good, and that's about it. Management was rudest I have ever come across, waitering staff tried but couldn't even handle 2 tables each, food average to poor. Waited 45 minutes for a steak which arrived cold. Not even worth the entrance fee charged to get onto the estate. If given the choice again I won't take my overseas visitors there.

  • Had a light delicious lunch there and had their signature Filet Burger which was delicious.
The restaurant's service was just the right level of friendly and professional.
The only thing I thought was a little sad was the fact that it is a little too sophisticated and cold and not enough of the farm.
Good pricing, great food and beautiful setting.
