I went here hoping to satisfy my craving for Chinese food and while the food was tasty I was a bit disappointed by the lack of flavour. I was lucky enough to be at a table where we shared a number of dishes, and each one had an underlying sweetness to it which was confusing in a lot of our choices. The crispy chili beef wasn't crispy and the chicken in the chicken and cashew nut was boiled and rubbery. The restaurant itself is lovely, nicely decorated and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful, but they seemed to be standing around watching people eat of a majority of our visit (it wasn't very busy) which was a bit off putting.
An often overlooked, yet well situated Chinese restaurant in Newlands, Cape Town, probably best known for its take-aways, yet with ample seating, the charming welcoming family who own and run Tai Ping, have not tried to be all things Asian, by providing sushi, Thai and more, but stuck to what they know and deliver best, namely an accessible Chinese menu, with the usual set options, but also some delicious and interesting a la carte items. Good quality and value - very user friendly too with BYO, and worthy of support for sheer consistency and good delivery.
We went to Tai Ping last night for a takeaway. Its a delightful looking place, and the restaurant looked incredibly inviting. The menu is a bit confusing but its easier than you think to work out.I had the Beef Chow Mein, whilst my girlfriend had the Vegetarian Chow Mein. It was truly delicious, and the spices and flavours were dead-on. Prices are reasonable as well. However; within the hour the stomach cramps had started. Im a 24-year-old student with a stomach of steel. And I got 4 hours of sleep last night. So if youre into vigilantism, and feel like dealing with what can only be described as violent crime all night, go for the Beef Chow Mein.Wont be going back, thats for sure. Use it/dont.* Girlfriend was fine, so only the beef must have been suspicious.
