The name Tauren (a bull on its hind legs) suggests steak in its purest form. Tauren was established in 1986 as Christie’s Kingdom, the brainchild of Christie Hennig. Back then it was one of the first modern-day restaurants. In 1991, Johan Reinke bought the restaurant and named it Michelle’s Restaurant, in honour of his wife.

A year later, Bester Warnich and Johan Swanepoel bought Michelle’s and renamed it BJ’s Steak Ranch. The name was retained when Johan became sole owner – and in 1999 when Dawie Groenewald bought the restaurant.In 2005, Abrie Mostert took over the steak ranch and, in partnership with his brother Bert, re-built the restaurant to its current full glory.In 2011, Johan Swanepoel returned to his beloved Namaqualand and reclaimed Tauren – this time assisted by his wife Joey, a capable hostess and manager.
