Owners description

La Gratitude was built in 1798 by the first Reverend of Stellenbosch. It boasts a blend of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture and is known as “The Grand Old Lady”.The building has been gently and tastefully renovated to provide the home for Ernie Els’s new signature wine bar and restaurant. They serve a wide selection of more than 170 wines, some of which you can sample from the cellars of the owners. The proprietors own Rupert wines with L’Ormarins and Anthonij Rupert wines; Rust en Vrede; Guardian Peak; Ernie Els Wines and Audacia Wines. The fifth partner owns Villa di Buona Speranza olive oil from Lucca in Italy which is especially imported for The Big Easy. If the finest cuisine prepared by head chef, JP Lopion, with the freshest ingredients whets your appetite, then plan to enjoy the delicious taste of laid-back luxury served with a hint of history.

User reviews

  • We were there on Friday the 4th of January and first impressions were awesome. Well the table allocated to us wasn't the best as we had booked late on a busy night. Our waiter Vusi was very good. We have never experienced such service anywhere else. Very friendly, suggestive and, well, waiters know their products. We did not even look at the menu. We recommend the place for dining. Great food as well.

  • We went there with very high expectations...which were exceeded! Our waiter, Jacob, was brilliant in terms of his wine knowledge, his suggestions of meals, and generally just very pleasant. We had the tiger prawns and risotto to start us off (prawns a bit expensive), followed by a wonderful piece of meat on the bone and lamb shank. The chocolate dessert and Italian ice cream was something from a different world. Very extensive wine list, but be prepared to pay a bit for high end wine. We had the De Toren Z, which is a great affordable high end wine. Total bill for 3 people, R1500. I'll definitely go again!

  • Generous portions, a nice bar and really greak steak. My husband loves it here.
