Food
Start with a meze platter – just the thing to share in the sun – with Gypsy ham, carpaccio and various cheeses. Then try the succulent roasted baby chicken with lemon, rosemary, and olive oil or the very traditional bobotie with pumpkin fritters. The baked cheesecake is one of the best in this neck of the woods.

Wine
A good list, carefully chosen, features the wines of the region and others.

Service
Friendly and unassuming.

Ambience
This is a delightful setting with plenty of big umbrellas to shield one from the afternoon sun, with some of the best views in town.

And...
If you can get up early in the morning, this is a great place to start the day with a scrumptious breakfast. (GL, October 2012)

  • Feeling famished after a long walk along the sea front, we rested our eyes on the peaceful sight of families enjoying a Sunday lunch and whale watching. We were met by friendly faces and soon found a table on the front line under a tree with the help of a waitress who was laid back and yet efficient. Simple but sufficient wine menu, bottle or by the glass. The menu is traditional and well balanced, but it appears that sea food is the primary interest and naturally so. Delicious looking seafood platters were being carried all around us, but we decided on fried hake and the "Banting Burger". It did not take long for our food to arrive but it would have been worth an even longer wait. The hake was fresh and done to perfection, while the "BB" (a first for me) was a combination of every good that is savoury and the accompanying sauces were delicious too. It was such a pleasant meal that we decided to stay for coffees and continue watching the whale calf frolicking in the bay from our vantage point.

  • For the best breakfast in Hermanus do head down to the end of the road where the waves and views are plentiful. I had a quick break in-between work responsibilities and being from Jozi, it needed to be quick. It felt like I won the lotto and went to heaven. The ever so friendly waiter was so accommodating and fast on his feet offering substitutions for my "no-gluten please". I had the eggs Benedict - wow! From the sensational visual pleasure to the complete satisfaction and excitement of my taste buds this was one for the books. The cuppa-chino, more foam no milk was superfluous. Needles to say, my staff found me there after hours still indulging in the moment and not wanting to return to Jozi.

  • The Burgundy location is unbeatable, but that is all that it has got going for itself. New owners mean new very high prices. And the very rude manager Pieter Nel is still there, addressing me in Afrikaans on arrival (he knows me well and that I speak English). He refused me permission to order any food, without explanation, despite many years of sending guests to the restaurant. Not recommended.

  • For a restaurant in such a prime tourist spot (the best view in Hermanus), Burgundy impresses by not charging tourist prices. Great food, substantial portions - at a really good price. Plus the wine list is sourced almost entirely from wine farms in the region - a big plus.

  • What a jewel of place in Hermanus! Lovely food reasonably priced. Had the mussles which was excellent and lamb shank - delicious. Only the calamari wasn't very good. Will definitely go back.

  • We went for breakfast and were so impressed that we returned for lunch the next day. Unbelievable service from the waiters. Eveything was beautifully presented, of high quality and good value for money. Fresh mussels were superbly prepared. Great fish and chips, and the breakfasts were good.

  • Like their previous restaurant, Savanna, this is one of those places that you go back to time and time again. Wonderful good food. Try their Eggs Benedict and a piece of fridge cheesecake.

  • The previous owners of very successful Savannah, took over The Burgundy last year and transformed it almost immediately into the most popular restaurant in Hermanus,so much so that you have to queue as you did at Savannah. With their well placed location close to the Old Habour, Sunday morning breakfasts will never be the same again.

  • What a delightful experience, friends and I started going to the Burgundy again. The new management and first class staff, together with excellent food and the greatest view in Hermanus, makes it the number one on my list in Hermanus!

  • Some friends and I went to Burgundy over the Easter weekend during our stay in Hermanus. We felt like trying someplace different and it seemed to cater for our variety of likes and budgets. We were all delighted with the speed, quality of service and wonderful food we experienced there. I wish there had been more people to enjoy it too. Next time youre in Hermanus, book a table for dinner!
