Food
The best-known dishes on Bjorn Guido’s menu are probably his creative pizzas, but the starters are worth pausing over, too. Try the summery watermelon, chevin and pistachio salad with aged balsamic, or indulge in a rich, creamy chicken liver parfait topped with jewel-like elderflower-and-port jelly.

Then by all means progress to the pizzas (R80 to R115): thin, bubbling, wood-fired bases in a range of creative combinations. Think bacon, brie, strawberries and balsamic, or wild mushroom, prosciutto and truffle oil. The Miss Piggy boasts an exciting-sounding mix of pork belly, pineapple, avocado and coriander, but doesn’t quite deliver the porky flavour punch we’re hoping for.

Another hearty option is the beef burger (R89) with tomato compote, pickled jalapeños, cheddar and hand-cut chips, which comes perfectly seasoned and generously proportioned. If you’re after medium-rare, make a point of ordering it as such – mine came rather well done.

There are also some more bistro-themed mains, which are more pricey – like the springbok loin wrapped in prosciutto for R185 – plus a handful of pasta, risotto and fish options, including a glorious-sounding veal tagliatelle with port and wild mushrooms (R98).

For dessert – if you’ve room – share a slice of the overwhelming but sublime chocolate torte. It’s a dense wedge of what can only be chocolate, butter and cream, with a dollop of sour cream, which slightly offsets the magnificent sweetness. The creamy, delicate crème brûlée also attains a near-perfect score from my extremely-strict-when-it-comes-to-crème-brûlée partner.

Drinks
The wine list is limited to the Lourensford Estate bottles at a mark-up, but these include a good range of varietals, and all are available by the glass.

Service
Staff are courteous and friendly, but this is a popular spot, so you might have a slight wait on busy weekends.

Ambience
This restaurant strikes a lovely balance between stylish and relaxed. The front deck, overlooking the lawn and geometric ponds, is glorious on sunny days – provided your table has a brolly. Inside, wood, exposed brick and dangling light bulbs create a calm, stylish atmosphere. The inner room, onto which the kitchen opens, is cosier and great for winter dining.

If you’ve got kids, ask to sit in the back garden, or at the back of the restaurant, which opens onto a walled garden with several jungle gyms – great if you’ve got a little sprinter. (There’s also a kiddies’ menu of pizzas, toasties and other child-pleasing options.)

And…
Don’t miss the lovely Lourensford Harvest Market on the estate on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm.

  • The starter were disappointing. For starter we shared the Anti Pasti Plank, the olives tasted like it came out of a packet, and Morgenster who specialize in Olives is down the road from Lourensford. The Hummus – tasted like blended chickpeas, we could not taste any spices, i.e cumin or paprika, garlic, lemon or tahini. I also believe when you order a bottle of still water, the bottle should be 1st a sealed bottle and 2nd cold and not poured into a glass jug from a filter machines at room temperature…and then get charged for the filter water. Next time I will order a BOTTLE of sparkling water…hopefully chilled. Our waiter was amazing, very friendly and helpful, if it wasn’t for the great service, I would properly not go back again.

  • The worst lunch we have had in the winelands. There was both under cooked and over cooked food. Then to top it up there was a huge wait between courses. Mussels arrived with no sauce. Quite worrying that the chef missed the cider cream sauce. Then the veal arrived with no sauce. The sole was dry. Sadly it was a birthday lunch for a member of our lunch party and we could not have had a worse experience. Just so disappointing. It is such a pity because it a beautiful setting.

  • We went to the Millhouse Kitchen to celebrate an occasion. My partner had the pork belly pizza, which was delicious and crispy, as ordered. I decided on the lamb burger, which looked wonderful, but was overcooked and tasteless. When the waiter enquired, I showed him the burger, but said that I didn't want to wait while it was replaced. A moment later, the manager ("Skara") was at our table, very concerned and contrite. He said that he wanted us to be happy with our meal and would therefore like to replace the burger with their beef fillet. I accepted. This arrived a few minutes later, looking scrumptious. It tasted wonderful, accompanied by their Lourensford Shiraz. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. We will visit them again soon. http://www.tripadvisor.co.za/ShowUserReviews-g469396-d3167356-r274202503-The_Millhouse_Kitchen-Somerset_West_Western_Cape.html#

  • Warm "City feel" in the vineyards. Beef carpaccio and prawn risotto amazing! The restaurant has three areas - on a fri for pizzas with friends and family it's vibey and casual yet in the front section I can put on my little black dress and celebrate an occasion surrounded by fairy lights and candles. An amazing atmospheric restaurant, perfect balance between being very smart yet welcoming and relaxed.

  • Great spot on a gorgeous estate. The restaurant has a modern yet relaxed european feel. Busy and lively through the day and more sophisticated atmosphere at night. Good, generous, hearty food. Cheesecake to die for. Great place for breakfast with really good coffee. Will be back..

  • Our hosts Somerset West residents, had mixed feelings on the food and service, whilst I don't personally like the Lourensford wines. The menu is very appealing but they need to work on the whole experience.

  • Had lunch there last week and enjoyed the setting and most of the food. Delicious cold soup starter (tomato and plum!) and good pizzas. The slow roasted duck a bit dry, but the chocolate tart more than made up for it! The best dessert I had in a long time!

  • A very welcomed addition to the Strand/Somerset-West dining scene this restaurant is vibey, food is tasty, love the decor and as a bonus it's very child-friendly too. There is a huge garden, jungle gym and tortoise home to keep them occupied. For food, choose from starters like squid or a very delectable paté, mains like pizzas, a burger, linefish or pork belly and dessert can be ice cream in a cone. It's unfussy but on the ball, wines are really reasonably priced and we loved the Naked Mexican beer too. Love the cat print wallpaper. Will be back!
