Starters include superb Dutch bitterballen with Dijon mustard, fried calamari with fresh lime and salsa verde, and cheese croquettes with garlic aioli. If you have a hankering for German sausages at their best, try the unbelievable trio of bockwurst, bratwurst and wiener with sauerkraut and mustard.

For something even more substantial, try the beef and ale pie with hand-cut fries, or the slow-roasted barbecue beef brisket with Swiss cheese, slaw and a soft bun, which will have carnivores weeping with happiness. The sociable eaters can order platters of meat or cheese with ciabatta to share with likeminded pals.

The delicious oval thin-based pizzas – with beer in the dough giving them a nice light quality – are topped with imaginative things like biltong, avo and blue cheese. Try one called the Kickin’ Chicken, with peanut sauce, toasted cashews, coriander, and a splash of chilli to give it that extra little kick.

If you are able to resist finishing off with the deep-fried Oreos, then you’re not really trying.

A small but well-priced wine collection is joined by a great selection of some of the best local craft beers and much sought-after imported bottles.

Service swings along at a great pace.

Overlooking the famous fields of the Mooiberge Strawberry Farm, the long deck with its eclectic bar and steel tractor seats faces outwards to the view and the distant mountains. There are also many other intriguing areas where friends can hang out in a group, but bear in mind this is not the place for a quiet tête-à-tête or a quiet, romantic lunch.

If you don’t want to really eat (why on earth not?), go for sundowners and order a plate of salty or sweet snacks to devour while watching the sun go down.

  • This is a very vibrant and energetic centric venue. At times too little attention is given to the patrons, hence me thinking the service isn't 5-star. However an all round good place for an after work drink situation.

  • The Farmer's Kitchen and it's twin restaurant/bar Thirsty Scarecrow are literally and figuratively the two most colourful restaurants in the Stellenbosch area. Not only do you have a scenic view while enjoying an excellent drink, but you are surrounded by beautiful strawberry fields and colourful scarecrows. The food is really fantastic and there are plenty variety to choose from. The drinks....oh boy. The coffee is really great and don't get me started on the milkshakes and the strawberry champagne! A wide variety of craft beers are available from Thirsty Scarecrow. Food and drink on the menu will suit almost everyone's liking. What further makes both restaurants so nice, is that it is really cool place to linger....either with your kids at the Farmer's Kitchen (they have a lovely play area for kids), with your special someone (enjoying the view) or a big group or friends/family (they have room). It's really perfect for a birthday party or other special celebration as well. I highly recommend that you make a stop, when visiting or passing through Stellenbosch!

  • This is my new favourite restaurant - I love the view from the deck, the strawberry beer, good and affordable selection of wines and the food is amazing. The Fat Tony pizza is superb :-)

  • Shocking bad service!!! We ordered 3 of the Beer tastings. 2 arrived after quite a long time. We waited for the 3rd one to arrive and after 20 min we enquired about the 3rd one and the waiter said they do not have enough glasses, sorry.
I cancelled my order and needless to say the remaining 2 orders were warm and were not consumed. I requested to speak to the manager and after 10 min he arrived (after I requested a second time to speak to him). I said I would like to bring the following to his attention merely to make him aware of the shortage of glasses for him to address in future and I was told that I must remember that they are busy and do not have enough glasses. Honestly poor communication skills and a general lack of enthusiasm.

Food arrived and I think that if someone orders ribs, that one should get more than 2 pieces, merely my opinion.
While we were having lunch they were busy with construction and plastering of walls.
We asked twice for tomato juice and once it arrived it did not have a cap on, but a piece of tin foil.
Next to us was a baby chair with an ashtray on it. Out waiters clothing was dirty, not ironed and had pen stains on the pocket.

I’ve taken photos of this and are more than willing to send this through.
This surely is an establishment that will not see me or my 4 guest ever again
