Food
Although the menu has been given a fresh new look, they seem to have been cosmetic only, and one can still order some of the old Toni’s favourites. In keeping with the focus on healthy eating, patrons can now opt for a Banting pizza base (they have always offered gluten-free) for the more than 30 pizza variants. The menu does also offer a couple of salads, pastas and desserts – including Toni Sime’s legendary banana, toasted almond honey and cream pizza, and the baklava scroll pizza with cinnamon sugar, pecans, syrup and ice cream, both absolutely delicious.

Drinks
Currently they stock beers from brewers such as Stellenbrau, Devil’s Peak, CBC, Guinness and Striped Horse on tap. There is a hugely popular selection of cocktails, judging by the number of jam jars being served, including quirkily named tipples such as Godfather, Lolly Pop or Church Hill. The wine list is compact but with a good selection of South African wines.

Service
Young servers contribute a vibey, fresh-faced energy, which has always been part of the Toni’s image. But they are competent, skilled, friendly and helpful, and some of the faces responsible for loading pizzas in and out of the beautifully mosaic-clad oven have been around since the start of this business.

Ambience
The original Toni’s Pizza is located in a renovated house in a small suburb called Deerness, just behind the Union Buildings. With a large stoep (covered during the winter) and a few smaller rooms inside that are pared back and modern in decor, it is still a welcoming, engaging space. A table in one of the inside rooms will give one an opportunity to see the pizzas being made and finished as they come out of the kitchen.

And…
Since Toni’s is truly beloved by young and old, and because Toni is the mother of three boisterous young’uns, she thought of providing a completely safe, enclosed children’s play area adjacent to the restaurant. Younger adults may wish to congregate near the large new dispensing bar while older folks might try to find a quieter corner further from all the activity. They are immensely popular for parties of all types, and excel at making people feel at home. Toni’s also has franchised branches in Menlo Park and Sinoville, while Toni’s Fish and Chips is just around the corner in Pierneef Street, Villieria.

    Food
It really is all about the pizza here. They have good pasta and a few other items on the menu, but what made the young Toni Simes famous was her pizzas. And they’re still as good as they were ten years ago. They’re into their teen years now and while they’ve held onto the basics, all the good ones, it seems as if they’ve tweaked the toppings and perhaps expanded with a few more adventurous combos, but not much more. It was all pretty much there from the start. The most popular option is certainly the Pizza Pesto with its tomato base, mozzarella, peppadew and basil pesto, goats’ milk cheese, walnuts and avo. Also worth noting is the Insalata with garlic, chilli, avo or artichokes, rocket, grana padano, pine nuts and olive oil. It really depends on whether you want to go the veg, fish, meat or cheese route. All these preferences are catered for, and then you can also go half/half or order two to three pizzettes (which makes almost a full pizza), each with a different topping. You’re truly spoilt for choice. Whichever way you go, the base will be thin and crispy and the toppings quirky and full of flavour.

    Drinks
An above average selection, especially for a place where you would probably be happy with a handful of quality wines. Some interesting selections include Kleinhoekkloof sauvignon blanc (from Ashton) or, if you favour red, an Edgebaston Berry Box. You could also opt for a Ginger Ninja shake with ginger bananarama or a Final Stroh shake, which is a different take on rum and raisin.

    Service
The goal is quality, so you will be warned that pizzas take time. But service is on the dot and they try to keep diners smiling.

    Ambience
Family is key here, which puts Toni’s squarely in the neighbourhood eatery genre. It’s warm and fuzzy with a gentle buzz, and Toni usually to be seen buzzing in the background. The interiors are simple but sweet and with the pizza ovens part of the general party, you can keep an eye on proceedings.

    And…
This is the mothership branch, and while there are a few franchises dotted around town, this is where you will find the heartbeat. Ten years on, it has lost nothing of its initial appeal.

  • Pizzas at their best, with unique tastes and clever combinations to give an old friend fantastic new flavours. The venue is both fun and sassy, making it great for families. Order mini pizzas with different toppings; you can go through the menu to select your personal winner. Order the one topped with provolone, gorgonzola, chorizo, lemon zest, chilli and rocket or the option with mozzarella, pears, walnuts and gorgonzola. (EO mag 2014)
  • Food
If you have to book two weeks in advance over weekends, they’re doing something right. The secret is their pizzas with wonderful toppings like pear, gorgonzola and walnuts, or artichokes, olives, ham and fresh basil. Order a large one or choose two mini pizzas with different toppings for fun, but remember: that’s probably enough if you’re still aiming for one of their decadent sweet pizzas with hazelnut chocolate and marshmallows, or mixed berries and ice-cream. Toni Simes is an amazing pastry chef and bakes a mean cake too.

    Wine
A good selection of local choices.

    Service
Take into account that the place gets really busy. If you’re fussed, better to go during the day in the middle of the week for a quiet meal. Even so, the staff cope well and try hard.

    Ambience
If you want a table it’s best to book. The interiors are funky and colourful with a good dollop of playfulness, which comes from the 20-something owners. They have a welcoming fire in winter with enough heaters to keep everyone warm and, in summer, the blinds go up and the air streams in. It’s always good for a kuier.

    And...
Toni Simes always has a smile as she runs between tables, the kitchen and any regulars she recognises. She keeps the place pumping. With husband Ian, she has also started Toni’s Fish and Chips Co. just down the road at 910 Pierneef Street, offering amazing quality once again. (October 2011, DdeB)

  • Best pizza you'll find in Pretoria! Pesto Pizza is my absolute favorite and you can't leave without sharing a dessert pizza. Service is great and so is the wine list. One of my all-round favourites in Pretoria.

  • Hands down the best pizza I have tasted in South Africa. Toni comes the closest to making true Italian-style pizza. The Nutella or the Belgian chocolate dessert pizzas are absolutely delicious!

  • So we went out to Toni's Pizza as a group of friends for a Birthday party. My friend forgot to inform us that for a group bigger than 15 people each person needs to pay R110 then you get a starter and any pizza.

Not knowing about this, me and two other people decided to eat before we go to Toni's with the idea to have drinks and eat the dessert pizza instead. When we got there, we were informed of this "Ridiculous" Policy of theirs for groups bigger than 15 people. I explained to the waiter our situation after which I was told that we had no option but  to take the R110 offer and if we just decided not to eat anything we would still be billed R110 per person. I was sitting there considering leaving, but then my friend would end up paying the R330.This literally felt like blackmail to me. Secondly, with their "set menu" Policy you can’t even go half one pizza, half another and you are forced to have there salad. You have no options except for the pizza you choose to eat.

  • I have been going to Tonis since the opening of the restaurant in the little dotted shop with the beautiful pizza oven, further up the street from where it is now. I must say it is great to go to the new location and see growth. The pizzas are great. They are original with fresh, interesting ingredients. Just the place to go to and ask for a pizza with less fattening ingredients when you are on a diet. Toni is always open to new challenges and ideas, and nothing is too much trouble. The crust is fantastically light and not a soggy fattening mass thatll fill you with the first slice. Those who complain about this speciality restaurant must rather go to one of the many pizza chains and pay a little bit less. The rest of us will book ahead so that we can ensure we get a place in this buzzing restaurant.

  • I have always been a Tonis regular and fan. Until recently I have never been disappointed with the food or service, which is usually top notch. We have always been treated well there, and given much attention and great quality service by the friendly staff there.Since Tonis has moved to its new location, however, I have only been met with rude waiters and poor service. After arriving with a pre-made reservation for 6, the waiter escourted us to a table for 4, and was incredibly rude when we informed her that there would be more of us (as earlier requested). Then, after moving to a new table, we waited for 20 minutes for service. After this, we waited another 20 minutes for our dinks, at which point we left. We were not offered an apology and were met with a smug reply from the waitress. IT is such a pity, as Tonis wonderful food will be missed. I have friends who have been met with similar bad service, and I truly hope that Tonis will jack up their service before they lose more of their devoted regulars.

  • I went to Tonis last night for the first and last time, yes the service was good, yes the atmosphere was lovely, yes its a great venue but it was without doubt the worst pizza I have ever had. I ordered half prawns and half salmon. Try eating the Sahara Desert and that may come close to describing the dried out cardboard like base the even dryer prawns and the poor quality salmon. Tasteless that is how I would describe it, hardly any cheese, well maybe there was but it had joined the cardboard base, the prawns and salmon in a competition to see which was the toughest and most parched! I had really been looking forward to trying their food, maybe I do not know how a Pizza should taste, but I left there feeling I had eaten dried air and to boot they charged me R120 set menu (it did include the starter Plain Base and Salad) but that is an outrageous price? I however would have not mentioned the price if I had actually had one bite of anything decent, the waitress and it could have been the manger on seeing my full plate asked if everything was alright, as I was part of a birthday group it would have not been polite to say no its not alright.

  • A true gemstone in Pretoria - You MUST visit Tonis - but do book or go outside of normal rush hours,Even when its a busy as hell the Pizzas and pasta that youll get will be of the highest standard and truly an explosion of taste. I will never eat another pizza again. Everything is well priced, and Ive always had superb service. Get phoning and book a table, or just pop in - but do realized that the news are spreading fast and if you didnt book you will need to wait - but boy is it worth it!

  • I have heard a lot about this place, and I must say that I have probably never had a better pizza than the pizza I ate here. The menu offers you a lot of very interesting pizza combinations, you just want to try everything on the menu. And it is almost possible with their little pizzets. Its small little pizzas, meaning you can order a variety of pizzas. And the pizzas are very well priced. If you go there, treat yourself and order the pesto pizza.I will definitely go back for another pizza. Well done!! The only thing that I have against them was the very slow waiters. Service needs to pick up a bit.

  • A great restaurant with even better food, which has become the victim of its own success. I couldnt help but feel that I had to sit, eat and get out as soon as possible in order for the next client to do the same. The food is abolutely fantastic, but unfortunately it does not make up for the lack of service. The untrained and rude staff made it an experience to forget. Not even the food will get me to go back there again.
