Critic's review

Food
Year after year, little changes on the menu of upmarket pub-grub. And that’s just the way locals and regulars like it. Alongside crisp battered fish and the popular Malay seafood curry, the local catch of the day is your best bet. Some meaty options are available too, such as the Paternoster fillet with creamy mussel sauce. Prices are a little steep for the pedestrian fare.

Wine
A surprisingly good range of Swartland estates at good prices, all available by the glass. Darling Brew lager and ale available on tap.

Service
Friendly and efficient, even in the holiday season you’ll rarely have to wait long.

Ambience
A rustic cottage with the best sea views in town. A large shady deck struts out onto the beach, but if you want a front-row seat in summer you’ll need to book the day before.

And...
In season, the sizeable crayfish offer good value. (RH, October 2012)

  • We recently visited this restaurant at the beachfront in Paternoster. The food was actually quite good but I would not recommend people to go to this place. We had several experiences that made us realize that the place and the customers are not very fond of mixed-race couples. We had to listen to several racist remarks towards us. One person made a remark about getting aids towards my wife. Another family was literally starring at us for being there. We further got the impression that the person at the reception didn't want to give us a table when she saw 2 mixed-race couples coming in although the waitress already had a free table for us. We paid a lot for our food and drinks just to listen to some racist remarks and see people staring at us for being in that restaurant. Further they didn't even bother to reply to my 2 emails after our visit. This is just sad. This place made us realize that racism is still alive in South Africa.

  • This was my first visit ever to Paternoster and I had a meal with my wife on Friday 20 March. I must admit if I had known the price I was going to pay for a meal for two I would have booked at a different restaurant. One does not mind paying for great food and great service, but this was not my experience. I thought that the portion sizes were small in comparison to the price we had to pay and although the Malay curry was great the King Prawns I had was insipid and lacked flavour the portion of rice you receive with your meal is just too small. When paying R169.00 for a main course you expect something exceptional unfortunately this was not my experience. I am sure that if it were not for the location it would have changed ownership by now. I just hope that they do not catch (ecxuse the pun) a lot of other first time visitors.

  • Very sad day at Voorstrandt Restaurant, Paternoster We loved Voorstrandt Restaurant in the beautiful Paternoster, when coming to the west coast who is so renowned for their hospitality, we make sure to make a reservation at Voorstrandt Restaurant. Until today 22 March 2015. We went for dinner the previous night, had delicious mains and the waiter suggested we have the sticky toffee pudding for dessert but rather decided to come back for it the next day. So we went there over lunch, the following day and as we placed our order with the waitress, the owner Adriaan comes to just make sure if we wanted dessert and drinks, first we thought he was just checking the order that was placed, but that was not the case. He told us that it is lunch time and that there are people waiting to be served and that it is no problem for him if we come for dessert after lunch time but NOT NOW, and asked us to get up and leave - My jaw dropped on the floor. We have never been so humiliated and embarrassed in our lives!!!!!!! How can this be??? How can a restaurant owner decide for you what you would like to have for lunch and what not, who does he think he is. Adriaan the owner of Voorstrandt Restaurant does not fit in with the West Coast Hospitality. For us that comes from the bustling Gauteng province we're use to rude and inconsiderate restaurant service but have never imagined we would experience that here. Needless to say as much as we loved the restaurant, we will never ever ever go back there. This was ultimately the worst dining experience of our lives.

  • The crayfish we ate at this place was still frozen and the prices were the highest we have ever seen for crayfish. We heard they buy crayfish from locals for next to nothing and ask this ridiculous prices in the restaurant.

  • I was pleasantly surprised! I have been vising Paternoster for years and have neglected this restaurant. Delicious calamari and prawns...I had a burger that was fantastic! Restaurant was busy but the service was excellent!

  • Very disappointing meal 20/4/2013! The location is amazing, but there is no fresh fish on the menu, all previously frozen! Difficult to understand for a fishing village! My husband had yellowtail and it was very unappetizing. I had seafood curry, which tasted wonderful, but I suspect was made from seafood mix that you can buy at Pick&Pay. There are so many other options in Paternoster, we will never return!

  • Possibly the worst restaurant in the Western Cape! Visited them a few times over the holiday. Service really poor and extremely unfriendly. Arrived one afternoon at 16,45, asked for a table for drinks and was told that they've got reservations from 18,00 onwards. They seated us in the bar area and did not even offer us a table, should we be willing to leave at 18,00.

When we asked for oysters we were told that their policy is not to serve food in the bar.

Point is that we often eat at Sevruga / le Quartier/ Beluga / Moreson / Salt and easily eat between R800 - R1200 worh of starters with drinks, for 2 people and can do this in 1 hour and 15 minutes, if required. Voorstrandt however thinks that they are so famous that they don't need this.

I am proudly South African and won't support them ever again. The manager is the worst mannered manager I have come across. The service was bad everytime we were there. The food is really nothing more than mediocre! If you eat seafood there, you may just as well buy a box of I+J hake and fry that up yourself.

Worse Cape restaurant I can think of! I would rather drive the 15 minutes to Vredenburg and eat in the mall (without sea views).

Would love to see a few other restaurants opening up in Paternoster. Suzi and Marthinus - well done for you guys!

  • A very disappointing meal. Not one item on the seafood platter was fresh. Everything was deep fried, greasy and the mussels were so overpowered by the thick chunky garlic sauce that we could not even taste them. For a seaside restaurant they could at least pride themselves with fresh seafood. Beautiful setting though.

  • I agree with the previous customer. Voorstrandt has a perfect location - what more could you want sitting on the beach, so close you can almost put your feet in the sand! However, the male manager is surly to the point of rudeness and the waiters have an attitude as if they are doing US the favour by serving us! Something needs to change - maybe get rid of the rude manager (if hes the owner, too bad!). We have been more than a few times and wish the waiters would get it together!
