Seafood commands centre stage at this seaside restaurant. It’s fresh and in abundance. The luxury of a perlemoen starter is only upstaged by the totally decadent seafood platter, loaded with crayfish and everything else. Your job becomes even more difficult as you then have to decide between the myriad of sauces and extras accompanying the platter. Alternatively, keep it simple with calamari or delicious grilled fish.
Don’t despair if you’re not a seafood admirer. Lamb shank, oxtail, braaivleis and pap, and crocodile sosaties all also fill the gap nicely. The ribs are also fantastic. They even serve curried tripe, although the ‘pensie’ could have been cooked a little longer. But all is forgiven at the sight of the fluffiest heap of samp – it’s nostalgic and comforting and just one of the many side options available. Monumental loaves of freshly baked bread beckon from a table.
As for sweets, how could you refuse Peppermint Crisp tart or koeksisters?
The wine list contains everybody’s favourites, perfect to sip from the quaint little enamel mugs supplied. You could also saunter over to the ancient coal stove to pour yourself ‘moerkoffie’.
Friendly, energetic waitrons with rolled up pants and curious Karate Kid-style headbands scuttle over the sand, bearing enamel plates to keep everyone happy and fed. Food orders are discussed and suggestions are made, resulting in the embodiment of South African hospitality.
Robinson Crusoe might have dreamed about this place: painted white benches and tables, shelter from the elements and tons of enamelware, as well as outside seating with the sea lapping at your toes for balmy evenings and warm fires inside for when the breeze turns into a howling gale. Your view: the ocean.
