Owner's description

Fondly known as a home away from home on Durbans south coast, Waves is a popular spot for a relaxed weekend meal with friends and family. They're famous for their seafood dishes and generous pizzas. The view across the sea from the wooden deck is spectacular and its no surprise that this is a sought-after wedding venue.

Sheelagh Lloyd Ate at waves February 2015 The location remains very pleasant. The waitress helpful and pleasant. The food ATROCIOUS. The owner when asked to come to the table SURLY AND UNINTERESTED. Tiger prawns grossly over-cooked and so exceeding tough. Garlic sauce totally uninteresting. Salad dressing gloopy and not tasteful. Chicken peri-peri, the chicken undercooked and the peri peri sauce brushed on afterwards (no marinating). Additional peri-peri sauce brought but very poor quality. In addition, talking to friends yesterday, they also in February had VERY UNPLEASANT fish (grossly overcooked) and the owner uninterested.
    1) Drinks took 20 minutes to get to us. 2) Our food took 1 hour to get to us after ordering. 3) The knives, forks, glasses and plates were all dirty. 4) The "Vegetable Platter" we ordered to share was a terrible drizzle of lettuce, sprinkled with other salad items, microwave potatoes, sour tasting green beans, a slice of butternut, old spinach. Terrible food. 5) Prices are too high considering the value. Nice view for a beachfront restaurant, not much else...

My three daughters and myself were visiting a friend in Umkomaas and she suggested we have dinner at Waves diner on the beach.
Just after we were seated and given drinks the owner appeared with a black employee in tow and the owner told him in a very derogatory and nasty way to scrub and sweep the floor around the table next to us. I did not approve of the sweeping whilst we and others were there.
Later it got chilly and one on the girls had been given our jackets. My daughter got up and went to the owner who was chatting to other folks and very politely asked the owner to light the gas heater. He immediately responded in a unfriendly manner and stated , no I'm not cold and definitely not for so few people. He looked at me and I just shook my head. About10 minutes later we decided enough is enough and got up to leave. I asked the staff to contact the owner so I could speak to him and the staff contacted him by phone and he refused to come and speak to me.
In my opinion we must not support this terribly rude person.
On the 15th May 2014 we were on holiday at Clanstal. We had our two dogs with us and we were looking for a place to stop and have supper. My fiance got out the car and asked if it was possible to have supper and take our pets to the deck to eat. The owner was surprisingly pleasant and insisted that we (my parents, my fiance and his nephew), come inside with the dogs and have supper, as it was too "cold" to let everyone sit outside. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was like going home!!! Last year we went to this particular resturant with my brother, and all I can say is that to me they should be a 10 star resturant, as they make the guests feel welcome and loved. Do yourself a favour and visit WAVES and you'll be wanting to come back for more!!!
