Food
Go hungry. You’ll develop a large food baby after wolfing down one of these bad boys. I opt for the Saffa burger – according to Urban Dictionary, that’s ‘a real South African’. This patriot of a burger features soft, seeded buns and comes with two juicy, chargrilled patties, melted mozzarella, cheddar cheese and all the trimmings. The beef has a slight smokiness to it and the mild chilli basting adds a lekker kick. Throw piquanté peppers and chutney into the mix, and you’ve got an explosion of slighty sweet, spicy and umami flavours.

Because ‘The Avo’ burger isn’t available, we decide to tuck into the CMGP (creamy mushroom and green pepper) burger. To my disappointment, I can’t pick up the mushroom, or green pepper flavour, for that matter. Could it be that they had failed to add the very sauce after which the burger is named? Perhaps they had run out of mushrooms? And green pepper.

Hoping to find solace in the hand-cut chips, I am further disappointed. The chips turn out to be a little oily and instead of being crispy on the outside as I had hoped, are more like slap chips.

For the brave (read: ravenous), Woodies also offers ‘Challenge Burgers’. Choose between The Triple Stack (including three 100g patties) and The Colossus (either four 100g patties or two chicken fillets) with cheese, pickles and all the trimmings.

Drinks
Woodies only sells burgers and chips – no drinks. The food market, however, has a wide range of drinks available.

Service
Besides the quarrel at the counter, the service was reasonably quick and efficient.

Ambience
It’s a food market so shared tables are a thing. Because the food is served takeaway-style, you can opt to chow down in the comfort of your own home if you’re not lucky enough to find a seat somewhere.

And…
Woodies is one of the few, if not the only, dedicated halaal burger bars in Cape Town.

  • One of Cape Town's best kept secrets and best damn burgers hands down. If you looking for a fine dining experience, then you've come to the wrong place. But if you looking for a great tasting, value for money burger, then you found it!

  • The burgers here are massive! And well priced too! They certainly don't skimp on portion sizes. Their chili burgers have loads of chili, I love that they use fresh chili and jalapeños too, if you like just a hint of chili, don't try this!

  • I travel to Cape Town every 3 months. When i land, the first thing i want to eat is a Woodies Burger. Before I was hooked, I heard about Woodies. The rumors were positive so decided check it our for myself. By nature I am a burger buff. So its not easy to impress me. I ordered a double beef with cheese. The burger is presented in an old school and unpretentious manner - wax paper and a bag of hand cut chips. The burger is a perfect size. The bun was soft and light. The burger + sauces was really flavorful but not over done. I remember looking at this burger after 3 bites and saying to myself, F%@(k this is really good! After that i am a fan. I have tried every burger on the menu and I have always been impressed - nothing comes close. I discovered that one of their secrets is that everything is 'hand made' & fresh. Their meat is superior quality and they add love into the mix. I guess they are so popular because its made with love and care. Its like eating grandmas food or your moms - it just tastes amazing and you are unable to explain why. Its magic. Woodies is the Best Damn Burger joint.
