9 ways to spend your 67 minutes this Mandela Day

Analysts estimate that more than half of South Africans do not have access to enough food, so what better way to spend your 67 minutes this Mandela Day than by planting veggie seeds, making soup or packing meal hampers? We rounded up some food-related activities you can get involved in on Friday 17 July and Saturday 18 July 2015.

Work in the garden for Harvest of Hope (Khayelitsha, Cape Town)

Abalimi Bezekhaya and Harvest of Hope are hosting a gardening day at Moya We Khaya Garden Centre in Manyani Peace Park, Khayelitsha on Saturday 18 July 2015 from 9am to 1pm. Get your fingers dirty by tending fruit and veggies in this organic garden and planting trees supplied by Green Pop. Harvest of Hope provides fresh organic veg, fruit and herbs grown in urban gardens in Cape Town’s townships to eager cooks who sign up to receive a bag each week. (Some of us on the Eat Out team have been enjoying these veggies for years now!) At the same time, the organisation creates sustainable and dignified work. (Find out more at harvestofhope.co.za.) Volunteers on Mandela Day should bring warm clothes and a snack for themselves. There will be soup for lunch and a children’s choir for entertainment.

Pack hampers for Foodbank SA (Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town)

Commit your 67 minutes at one of FoodBank SA’s hamper-packing events on Friday 17 July 2015. The events will take place at the Foodbank SA warehouses in Epping (Cape Town), Redhill (Durban) and Meadow Dale (Johannesburg) with your time slot needing to be booked in advance – 8.30am to 10am, 11am to 12.30pm, or 1.30pm to 3pm. FoodBank SA asks that you make a contribution towards the costs of the food rescue programme for the day. For more information, phone 021 531 5670, email ashleigh@foodbanksa.org or visit www.foodbank.org.za.

Cook soup for Meals on Wheels (countrywide)

There are numerous Meals on Wheels branches around the country, all of which would welcome donations and assistance. The Tygerberg Branch in Parow has a great need of soup, for example. You can cook it and donate it frozen, or deliver fresh or dry ingredients. The team there works very closely with counsellors and schools in the community to keep people fed. Another way to quickly help is to simply sms the word ‘meal’ to 39055 to donate R15. Find a branch near you.
