Better Together: Cape Town’s hot new takeaway spot inspired by COVID

While the current global pandemic has seen many in the food industry take a massive knock, there are still stories of those who have managed to create something new out of this crisis. Enter chefs and co-founders Teenola Govender and Geoffrey Abrahams, who have just launched their Cape Town food delivery kitchen called Better Together.

Teenola moved from Durban to Cape Town in 2014 to pursue her dreams of becoming a chef. She graduated from Silwood School of Cookery and has previously worked at the likes of The Test Kitchen, Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia, The Pot Luck Club and Ye Olde Test Kitchen (The Test Kitchen’s pub lunch pop-up). Geoffrey, who is also a musician and professional photographer, has worked at numerous top establishments as well – most notably La Colombe, Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia and Lima, chef Virgilio Martinez’s Peruvian restaurant in Dubai.

The pair met during their time at Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia in 2018 and they instantly clicked. Fast forward to 2020 and this chef duo saw an opportunity even in a pandemic. “We saw this as a time for us to reunite in the kitchen and cook some killer food,” says Teenola. “We wanted to make delicious, affordable meals that we could not only serve to our immediate friends in the industry but also to the general Cape Town public, to be enjoyed from the safety of their own homes.”

What’s on the menu? The pair has devised a menu that plays to their strengths, drawing inspiration from their respective cultures. “We’re using family recipes, genuine Durban spices and authentic techniques. Our aim is to build layers of flavour with every bite,” says Teenola. “It is our core belief that good food is better when shared, because it has the power to forge new connections.” Think Goan coconut curry with fire-roasted chicken, or cauliflower accompanied by tandoori naan and pineapple atchar. End off with a lemon-and-thyme cake with homemade vanilla lemon curd. This flavour-packed offering costs only R300 for two.
