Bubble waffles, sweet tacos, and giant churros: Durban North’s new dessert-only eatery, Plan B Dessertery

In the last couple of years, Durban’s Mackeurtan Avenue has become one of the city’s foodie hotspots. From burger joints to burrito bars, the restaurant offering has been growing at a rapid rate. Now, East Coasters will be able to satisfy their sweet tooth with the new dedicated dessert bar, Plan B Dessertery.

Ken and Michele Fourie and Michaela Mulvey – who are also behind Wakaberry and burrito spot Four15 – are the store’s founders. “We wanted to bring something fun to Durban. Cape Town and Joburg always manage to sneak the fun stuff in before us so we wanted to give Durbanites something to get excited about”, explains Michaela. Thus far, their efforts seem to be working: the store has created quite a stir on Durban’s Instagram feed with its bubble waffles and other sweet creations.

The inspiration behind the new dessert bar comes from street food desserts around the world – the kind that are easy to hold and don’t need a knife and fork to eat. The sweet menu features trendy bubble waffles – which originate from Hong Kong – churros, and dessert tacos.

The waffles come in nine different flavours, with options like the Bees Knees with vanilla ice cream, chocolate honeycomb and caramel sauce; the toffee apple with double caramel ice cream, green apple chunks and candied nuts; and the Wimbledon with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, crushed meringue, cream and chocolate sauce.

The dessert tacos are made with a sweet waffle cone and come in three flavour combos with a Sunbow options sprinkled with mini Astros. As for the churros, you’ll find filled ones, giant ones, and mini churro bites. You’ll also be able to grab an ice-cream cone, or a coffee-infused shake.

Plan B Dessertery is open now open at 41 Mackeurtan Avenue and, from this week, diners at Four15 will be able to order dessert directly from the new neighbouring dessert parlour.

The team are also running monthly community driven projects. This month, they’re inviting customers to support Sole Mates Foundation, driven by 11 year old Tatum Teunissen who collects shoes for less fortunate children.

High fives all around!
