Budget-friendly breakfasts in the Winelands

Contrary to popular belief, it’s still possible to have a cracking breakfast for R50 and under (coffee and tea excluded) at a premium spot in the Winelands. Whether you’re keen on a fry-up, a fruity muesli vibe or an indulgent pastry to start your day, this list has all the eateries that will leave you more than satisfied even when you’re on a tight budget.

Big Dog Café (Franschhoek)

Terbodore Coffee’s eatery at 191 Main Road was designed to help bring out the best in their coffee. For R42, get two free-range eggs on toasted sourdough or a croissant. Add-ons include everything from turmeric hollandaise (R19) to coffee-cured Franschhoek trout (R42). Smoothies, cakes and pastries all come in at under R50, including vegan options. The birthday cake waffle is worth the R60 for those with a sweet tooth – a buttermilk waffle is topped with cookie crumble, cornflake-milk ice cream and house-made dulce de leche.

The Blue Crane & The Butterfly (Stellenbosch)

Breakfast is served at 6.30am to 12pm Mondays to Fridays and 8am to 12pm on Saturdays. Options start from as low as R45, from which you can choose between the Birdie Breakfast of three rashers of bacon, grilled tomato and poached egg on rye; home-made chocolate muesli with toasted nuts, dried fruits and seeds; or home-made bircher muesli with berry compote and yoghurt. Or have a slice of their legendary cakes for only R40.

Boschendal at Oude Bank (Stellenbosch)

There are few eateries more atmospheric than this stunning spot on the corner of Church and Bird Streets – if you’ve been here, you’ll know. Breakfast is served daily and the legendary simple scrambled eggs on toast is still only R45. If eggs aren’t your thing, choose one of the many freshly baked pastries under R50, of which the dangerously good date-and-nut muffin with caramel sauce is a must-have.

Café BonBon (Franschhoek)

This popular traditional French-style bistro serves breakfast daily between 8am and 11am, with pocket-friendly options like the courgette, corn and feta fritter with crispy bacon and roasted cherry tomatoes for only R50, or cinnamon oats porridge served with warm apple and currant compote for R45. All breakfast items are served with toast.

Lanzerac Deli (Stellenbosch)

For only R35, indulge in the sweet or savoury scones (with each portion comprising two scones) served with jersey cream, cheese and jam. Or try the giant muffins served with butter, cheese and jam for only R25. There are also croissants and pain au chocolat served with butter and jam for only R25; else choose from the selection of savoury quiches with a crisp side salad for only R45. These and other breakfast items are served all day every day from 8am to 6pm.

Meraki (Stellenbosch)

This award-winning eatery at 42 Ryneveld Street continues to win the hearts of locals and visitors alike, with scrumptious breakfast options at very fair prices. Croissant options range between R20 and R45, featuring generous fillings like tomato, mozzarella and pesto. Granola bowls, seasonal fruit bowls and cooked oats all range between R35 and R38. Or enjoy a croque madame Provençal (which has tomato instead of ham) for only R48. Even the classic French toast with maple syrup and crème fraîche comes in at a fantastic R45. The breakfast menu is served Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 11.45am, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 11.45am.

SCHOON (Somerset West)

This is a tiny shop with a big heart. Take your pick of freshly baked artisanal loaves under R50 that you can take home for a make-your-own brekkie, or order a simple croissant (or toast) with jam, Boland cheese and salted butter for R52. Else opt for the delicious soft mielie pap with burnt honey for R45. Pastries range from R20 (for a pasteis de nata) to R55 (for pecan-nut choc-rye tart) and everything in between, including croissants with a milk tart filling.
