Cape Town’s Cheyne’s, Lucky Bao, Mexicola Locale and Ding Dong are not closing

Contrary to the posts on social media Cheyne’s, Lucky Bao, Mexicola Locale and Ding Dong have not closed their doors but have instead undergone a change in ownership.

The social media announcement from the new owner follows a spate of false posts eluding that Cheyne’s, Lucky Bao, Mexicola Locale and Ding Dong were going to close down for good.

“I hereby announce that I am the registered legal and financial owner of our family restaurants; Cheyne’s, Lucky Bao, Mexicola Locale, and Ding Dong with immediate effect,” says Vivienne Morrisby.

The full announcement can be found here.

The group of restaurants will remain within the family under the new ownership and is a gentle reminder that the restaurants are all still operating and eager to welcome back their loyal (and new!) customers.

Vivienne reassures guests that the secret recipes behind the much-loved dishes will not be changed.

“I have taken legal and financial ownership of all four of our restaurants, and confirm that we have no plans to close any of our restaurants, or to change our menus or the dining experience at our restaurants,” she says.

An institution within the Hout Bay community, Cheyne’s has garnered a reputation for its Asian-fusion dishes – with locals flocking from near and far to taste what the kitchen team has to offer.

Lucky Bao operates in two locations in Cape Town, Hout Bay and De Waterkant. The restaurant offers Asian-street food and light meals. The Hout Bay location is a small 8-seater spot known for boa and streetfood fare.

Unlike the other restaurants which stick to a theme of Asian-inspired or adjacent, Mexicola Locale is rooted in all things Mexican. The Hout Bay-based restaurant offers a range of smokin’ Mexican dishes such as nachos and tacos.

Ding Dong, a Tachinomi, otherwise known as a Japanese standing bar, serves a range of Japanese inspired cocktails, bar food and beers.

Guest reviews on Cheyne’s restaurant stand testament to the establishment’s stellar offering in both service and food.

“The food is stunning and it’s a beautiful space too. Runs like a well-oiled machine”, shares Jessica S.
