We reported last week on an ice cream ‘burger’, now available at IYO on Bree Street, but if ice cream sandwiched between cookies is your thing – and we’re not sure why you’re reading this if it isn’t – we have even better news: a dedicated ice-cream sandwich store called Crumbs & Cream has now opened in Sea Point, Cape Town.
The owners, sisters Shahar and Or Peled, didn’t always work in food – Shahar worked in advertising, and Or owned a spa in East London – but they have long shared the dream of doing something together that would make people happy. They started out with a small three-wheeler food truck, but now the business has a bricks-and-mortar home, too. “For us, it’s a dream come true,” the pair declares.
Crumbs & Cream offers a range of ice cream sandwiches, assembled to order with Italian gelato and magnificently chewy homemade cookies. The gelato flavours are constantly changing, but at any given time there could be classics like chocolate, vanilla and a vegan sorbet.
As for cookies, the best sellers are Oreo, brownie cookies, choc-chip and rainbow (studded with hundreds and thousands). They also serve limited-edition cookie flavours, which in the past have included peanut butter, vegan heaven and red velvet.
At the store, you’ll also be able to add a spread to your order – think Nutella, peanut butter and dulce de leche – and toppings like mini Smarties, coconut, Oreos, cookie crumbs and white-chocolate chips. (We’ve entered a small diabetic coma just thinking about it.)
A basic sandwich is R35.
They’re also offering takeaway freezer ice-cream sandwiches to order; just make sure you place your order 24 hours ahead.
Eat Out has sampled the cookies, and is happy to report that they’re superlatively chewy. (Cookie elasticity is crucial in ice cream sandwiches – else you’ll have a leak on your hands.)
Find Crumbs & Cream at 16 Regent Road, Sea Point.
The food truck is still in operation, too. Find it at the V&A Waterfront between the Watershed market and the aquarium daily from 10am to 7pm.
