Restaurants and the coronavirus

Note: The information below was correct at time of going live. As so many restaurants are responding to this crisis, we will not be updating this list any longer, but encourage you to follow Eat Out on Instagram where we will continue to share updates. You can also see which restaurants are offering dine-at-home options here, and if you are a restaurant owner who is offering a dine-at-home service or any other service you think we should know about, please let us know here.

LAST UPDATED: Friday, 20 March, at 14:22

It’s hard to believe that the first case of COVID-19 in South Africa was confirmed just this month. As countries around the world go into shutdown, there’s a lot of understandable concern about how coronavirus will be affecting SA restaurants.

While some restaurants are opting to close temporarily, others are simply changing the way they do business. You can continue to support them by being more sanitary when you eat out, showing solidarity on social media, using alternatives to cash, and tipping generously when you order a takeaway (casual waiting staff tend not to have medical benefits).

Let us know what you’re doing – and, in the meantime, here is the list of restaurants that are changing the way they do business to ensure the safety of their employees and customers. We’ll be updating it regularly, so check here before heading to your favourite spot.

A MESSAGE FROM CEO ANDREW MILNE ON COVID-19 📌 At Spier, we recognise that we are facing a very serious situation worldwide and increasingly for South Africa. This is the time for considered, calm caution to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff and remain operating in those areas where we are able to do so. We have implemented extensive protective measures across our farms, our cellar and our hospitality offerings to remain open. Some of the specific measures we have put in place include: Strictly following the social distancing guidelines at our hotel, conference centre, restaurants and wine tasting centre: – Group sizes and alcohol restrictions as stipulated by the government will be adhered to at all times. – Tables at all of our restaurants have been spaced at least 1.5m apart and guests are encouraged to sit outside. – Our hotel is operating at a third of its capacity. – We follow a strict and detailed hygiene regimen to ensure ALL surfaces at Spier are disinfected on a regular basis. – We have increased the frequency of the cleaning of our public areas. (including lobby, door handles, public bathrooms, etc.), using disinfectant. – We have increased the deployment of hand sanitizers across all areas. – Staff are working in shifts to minimise the number of employees on site at any one time. – We have conducted additional training to ensure our staff understand the hygiene techniques relevant to decreasing the risk of exposure to this virus. To date we have had no reported cases of COVID-19 at Spier. We have an incident reporting system in place and all management teams are maintaining vigilance. A message to our most valued diners: Following the Presidents state address on Sunday evening, weat La Coco C recognise that it is our responsibility to take the COVID-19 precautionary measures VERY seriously. As most of our diners know, La Coco C is a small family owned café that is responsible for 13 staff members that have been part of the team since inception – together we are La Coco C!. The personal touch is our secret – we know all of our local customers by face and also know their menu favourites! You are our passion! As a small business we are facing a serious challenge! Do we temporarily close our café amidst this chaos? We desperately need the support of our community to keep financially afloat! We have for the past few weeks been taking great care of our staff – they have all received “vitamin shots”” in order to boost their immune systems – we love them and their families! We have also been providing sanitizers for our staff to take home with them to further continue the safety precautions needed right now. In our world – a simple coffee and healthy meal – is essential! Catching up with friends or a quick business meeting is essential – it’s what makes our world go round! La Coco C has put all the necessary health and safety measures into place! Your health will not be compromised! : 1. We will greet you at the door and offer you alcohol-based sanitizer to cleanse your hands. 2. We have also installed a wash basin where you can wash your hands with soap if needed. 3. All our staff have been trained to clean and sanitize tables and chairs after every table has left. (If needed it can and will be done in your presence) 4. In line with food safety, we follow strict protocols – our disinfectants are food and consumer safe. All surfaces, tables, counters doors and machines are disinfected regularly during the day. 5. Menus are sanitized after each use. Our menu is also available on-line thereby preventing the need to touch it. 6. We have the following pay points, card machine with “tap” option, SnapScan and Zapper. Read comments below to continue 👇

Oranjezicht City Farm Market (V&A Waterfront, Cape Town)

Closed until further notice, but you can still get fruit and vegetables via drive-through collection for a limited time

View this post on Instagram

The Market is closed but online veggies are sprouting. If you are looking to have a grocery shopping experience that doesn’t feel apocalyptic and leave you scratching your head wondering what your fellow Capetonians plan to do with all that toilet paper, you can continue to support your local farmers via our online fruit and veg box offering. Our farmers have loads of produce that they are continuing to harvest. So, from next week onwards, we will have a limited selection of veg and fruit boxes available to purchase online for drive-through collection at the market at specific times. Our packing team will be taking all the hygiene protocols to stay safe themselves. We have also taken the advice of event safety consultants and will be working with them over the next period to ensure the implementation of additional safety measures and stringent cleaning and disinfecting procedures, whilst receiving stock from farmers and packing these into boxes. Still, even with new strategies at hand, it is a difficult time for farmers and producers. The uncertainty is of great concern to all of our producers who rely on the market for their livelihoods – as it is for our customers who rely on the market as a source of great food. Our fig farmer in Paarl, for example, reports that his exports have decreased by 50% and now that the market is closed, he is not even picking the fruit off the trees. Stay tuned for more info or email market@ozcf.co.za to place your name on the veg box list.

View this post on Instagram

To our friends, clients and fellow members of the community … As South Africa and the world face this testing time and in light of the number of international guests that we host, as well as the number of cancellations we are experiencing, we have decided to close the Foodbarn restaurant for the next 2 weeks (starting Thursday 19th March to Thursday 2nd April) We will support all our restaurant staff financially during this time. We choose to remain positive and hope that we are able to return to normal trading once we know that it is safe to do so. We are unwavering in our commitment to our staff and wish to continue to serve our community and keep our business afloat. To this end, we are actioning the following: * our Deli, Bakery and Tapas Bar will be open as normal * all our staff will be subject to daily temperature checks. Any individual who shows signs of having a fever or a raised temperature will be asked to remain at home * increased frequency of routine sanitation and hand-washing and at the start and finish of every operational process * routine sanitation and cleaning of all surface areas after the completion of each production phase Our gorgeous Queenie will be at her post should you have any enquiries regarding the above or questions about the shop and the availability of our frozen meals. Please be assured the above decision was not taken lightly and we trust you understand. We sincerely hope that you all stay safe and healthy and look forward to seeing you on the other side of this massive challenge. As you know, the scenario we find ourselves in is developing rapidly so the above decisions could change in a heartbeat. Warmest regards, Franck, Pete and the Foodbarn team

Important Notice: COVID-19 WHAT ARE WE DOING? As a client of GOLD, you trust us to not only give you and your clients an amazing African Experience, but to also do it safely and responsibly. Today, as the world comes to terms with an unprecedented health scare in COVID-19, these values are more important to us than ever. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to share some insight into the steps that we are taking to guarantee that our Restaurant continues to meet and exceed the highest standards of hygiene. As we are only open at night, we spend the day ensuring that our dining rooms and common areas are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. These procedures are designed to the highest standards and include both personal spaces – tables, chairs, djembe drums – as well as communal areas such as our entrance, passages, staircases and toilet areas. During our evening service, we have dedicated staff ensuring that public spaces are again cleaned and disinfected continuously during service. Hand sanitizers are offered to all our guests as they enter the restaurant and we have made this part of our service – our wait staff spray their hands. We offer hand sanitizers with all credit card transactions too. All our staff follow the same procedure, on arrival we sanitize. Hygiene protocols in the kitchen are maintained, namely, sanitize hands when entering and leaving the kitchen. This strong focus on hygiene extends to our kitchen and food services. Ingredients are fresh and sourced locally, and our HACCAP kitchen meets the strictest guidelines for hygiene and safety. Addressing the new restrictions of gatherings of no more than 100, we have 7 different dining areas over 4 different floors so clients will be in their own dining room which will accommodate no more than 40-50 clients We hope that these measures will put your minds at ease when visiting GOLD. We ask that we all stand together as a community to ensure that we first and foremost keep our loved ones, staff and customers safe. We also ask that you continue to support small local businesses, who now more than ever are dependent on you. We want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to support our community by strengthening already stringent hygiene protocols, aggressive education and enforcement of Government guidelines to name but a few. Should you have any concerns, suggestions or comments, please feel free to reach out to us. Please note that our cancellation policy is to issue a store credit voucher which is valid for one year from date of cancellation. We respect your decisions to alter plans and want to work with you to find another time to celebrate. We are still committed to creating the best quality and tasting cakes and business as usual will continue. Please note all order changes need to be made at least 72 hours in advance. Whilst we encourage all to practice social distancing for the best of the community, this does not mean that we should cancel celebrating life, you can still make your little one’s face light up on their birthday morning with a beautiful cake, you can still sing and laugh and dance, and you can certainly still eat cake. Should you wish to discuss cost-effective mini celebration cakes, please get in touch. What should be at the forefront of our minds during these trying times, is the health of our community. Please keep safe and continue to follow guidelines, protect against allowing our anxiety to conquer reason, and if all else fails, keep cheerful by eating some cake! Together we are stronger!

To all our beloved guests, As you know we have always adhered to the highest cleanliness and food safety standards. With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, we want to ensure that our guests and staff know that we are going above and beyond and taking extreme measures to ensure the safety of ourselves, our staff and our customers. This is our top priority. We are working in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the World Health Organisation. We are putting into place, in both the UAE and South Africa, the following measures: Dedicated training of all staff members, additional hand sanitisers at all locations, special cleaning solutions in-store, as well as thermo-scanning of all employees before every shift.  On each shift, there will be one staff member responsible for ensuring all measures are adhered to closely. We feel that every single one of us has the responsibility to “flatten the curve” and we encourage everyone to do the same.

MOJO'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19 Faced with this grave situation, with full knowledge of the dire scenario, which may play out, it is our social responsibility to close @TheMojoMarket from the close of business tonight, Monday 16 March 2020. . . . #MojoMarket, having, shared ablution facilities for patrons and staff coupled with the inability to affect social distancing, is a potential breeding ground for this virus. . . . As wisely instructed by our President we cannot allow gatherings to take place of over 100 people. In fact, even under 100 people in the Mojo context, gatherings would be irresponsible. . . . Please understand that we make this decision as a response to a very grave situation. . . . We encourage other establishments to follow this example so as to protect the community especially our senior citizens and the most vulnerable. . . . We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as it is socially responsible to do so! . . . Yours faithfully, THE MOJO MARKET TEAM

Delivery personnel will sanitise their hands before and after each transaction 4. You can request for deliveries to be left at the security desk when placing your order 5. Always wash your hands before eating Handwashing The best way to mitigate the spread is through proper hand-washing for 20 seconds. We ask all customers to make use of our handwashing facilities at the shop. DELHEIM CORONAVIRUS PROTOCOL In the light of the recent confirmed cases of Coronavirus COVID-19 in South Africa and as one of the leading tourist destinations in the Stellenbosch Winelands, Delheim Estate has made it a top priority to be pro-active and have taken all the necessary precautionary health and safety measures in the past week – not only to safeguard our valued visitors but also our fantastic team. Proper informative and risk review meetings were held and additional sanitation measures were put in place, to ensure our staff was fully briefed and informed and in return, create more awareness amongst our guests to try and prevent the spread of the virus. A Dutch Tour group has since visited our popular estate where we have been informed today (Sunday, 15 March) that one of the members of the group has indeed tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. As five members of our team have been in contact with this group, we have decided to implement self-isolation for these individuals. To take further precautions and to limit any potential exposure to infection – for both guests and staff – we can confirm that our hospitality sector of the business will be closing for 2 weeks whereafter we will reassess the situation. During this period we are investing quality time in staff training and general maintenance. We have thus far celebrated a fantastic harvest and have been blessed with a great season and we are looking forward to being up and running again soon, welcoming back healthy visitors and staff to our iconic farm. Together we have the opportunity to react timeously and with integrity to minimize the infection rate in our country. Rest assured…your favourite Delheim wines are still available in stores nationwide or simply order online at www.delheim.com and we will ship your wines to you! We thank you for your continued support. The public hotline for the Coronavirus in South Africa is 0800-029-999. Please use this hotline if you display any signs of infection. #coronaprotocol #covid_19 #flattenthecurve #delheim #mindfulness #healthfirst #wecare #worththejourney

ACT EARLY, FLATTEN THE CURVE #covid19 Following the announcement of a state of emergency in South Africa with regards to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to ACT EARLY. Given the fast rise of cases in South Africa, and specifically the Western Cape, and thinking of the devastating impact the arrival of COVID-19 could have on our team and their families, and on a small community like Paternoster as a whole, we have closed all further reservations at Wolfgat for the time being. We have also decided to temporarily close Wolfgat and Oep ve Koep bistro from 18 March 2020 until 1st April 2020. We will offer guests with existing bookings for the remainder of March 2020 the opportunity to move their reservations to dates later in the year, or in cases where a rescheduling is not possible we will offer a full refund in accordance with our cancellation policy. If you have a reservation with Wolfgat or Oep ve Koep bistro in the next two weeks, we will be in contact shortly to make alternate arrangements.
