Where to dine during Restaurant Week South Africa

With 100 restaurants to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice during the XXL Edition of Restaurant Week South Africa. So, to help you decide, here are a few suggestions.

La Petite Colombe (Franschhoek)

Dine at one of Eat Out’s top 10 restaurants and enjoy an experience like never before. La Petite Colombe is offering an autumn-inspired eight-course tasting experience for R625 per person. This culinary journey will take you from yellowfin tuna to Purdon Wagyu, then to dry-aged duck and Karoo lamb. Vegetarians are also well catered to with their separate vegetarian menu, which includes delights such as confit butternut tart, lavender brioche and herb gnocchi with salsa verde and harissa. Both menus end with the memorable sweets trolley and can be enjoyed with a wine pairing at an additional R425 per person.

The Chef’s Table (Umhlanga, Durban)

This top spot in Durban has been making waves for all the right reasons, so you don’t want to miss a chance to dine here. Their culinary three-course dinner comes with a welcome drink for R395 per person. Starters include options such as fresh market fish, woodfired octopus with pork belly, butter-roasted prawn risotto and portobello fagottini with burnt pear and camembert. For mains, choose among sweet potato and ricotta gnocchi, a 28-day wet-aged fillet, confit king oyster, prawn ravioli and more. End off with a choice between the Gems of KZN (banana, macadamia and burnt sugarcane), Variations of Cacao Barry Chocolate (60% Amer, Zéphyr white, pecan, nectarine and caramelized milk ice cream) or carrot cake served with cultured cream.

Embarc Restaurant (Parkhurst, Joburg)

Embarc will take your tastebuds on a culinary journey they won’t soon forget! Their seven-course tasting menu experience costs R395 per person and includes experiences such as tuna tataki with watermelon, ginger and radish; mushroom tortellino with parsnip and black garlic; ostrich fillet with Malay pumpkin wontons and mango chutney; and chocolate meringue with Kahlua mascarpone and brandy snap. Vegetarians won’t feel left out with a choice of sundried tomato arancini (instead of the tuna tataki), and crumbed polenta and sweetcorn panna cotta (in place of the ostrich fillet).

Embarc Restaurant

Greenhouse (Constantia, Cape Town)

This beautiful location is offering a delicious seven-course African Modern tasting menu for R550 per person. You’ll start with veldt brood, move on to oodhingu (a Namibian dried meat dish) served with chicken parfait and biltong dust; beetroot three-ways with baba ganoush, labneh and couscous; linefish with coconut, cauliflower and fennel; and shisa nyama, a grass-fed Picanha steak served with an onion and garlic puree, sweetbreads and creamy pap. End your feast with a roasted banana sundae and an African espresso. The optional wine pairing comes at an additional R350.

Basalt Restaurant (Melrose, Joburg)

Basalt’s culinary four-course dinner menu for R420 promises to wow your senses. You’ll start with an amuse bouche of mushroom arancini, move on to a choice between roasted tomato and red pepper soup or crispy fried calamari for starters, tuck into lamb rump, handmade cappelletti or grilled linefish for mains, and finish with rosewater panna cotta, dark chocolate and caramel tart, or cheese and fruit for dessert.

Bilboa (Camps Bay, Cape Town)

Watch as the sun sets over the ocean while you tuck into a Mediterranean three-course dinner for only R295. Starters include a choice of fried baby squid, black mussels, Moroccan beef kofta or asparagus hummus with feta and flatbread. For mains, choose between grilled calamari, beef sirloin, dukkah-crumbed chicken, or spiced lentils and yoghurt with red onion and flatbread. Round it all off with a baked chocolate cheesecake or a zingy lemon tart.

Make a day of it in the Franschhoek winelands and indulge in a seven-course tasting menu with a glass of MCC for R695 per person. After your bread course, choose between three-hour cured and cold-smoked trout, eight-hour braised springbok lamb shank, butter-poached langoustine, or roast cauliflower and Boerenkaas tortellini. For mains, you have a choice between confit duck with cauliflower and vanilla purée or sous vide sea bass with squid and limoncello cured fennel and asparagus. End your feast with almond cremeaux, poached pear, salted pear caramel and semi-freddo, or a 70% chocolate fondant sphere. The optional wine pairing costs an additional R350 per person or opt for the non-alcoholic pairing at R325 per person.
