Dog-friendly restaurants in Cape Town

The Mother City is in no short supply of dog-friendly spots. From leisurely weekend dining to quick morning coffee runs, here’s where your furry friends are more than welcome.

Aegir Project (Noordhoek)

After a stroll on the beach with your pooch, what’s better than an ice-cold beer? Head to the Aegir Project Brewery for a frosty one and a gourmet burger with your dog at your side. A heads up: Aegir, the brewery’s mascot, also roams around freely, so make sure your dog is happy with other dogs before you head here.

Bamboo Garden Restaurant (Joostenbergvlakte)

The Bamboo Garden takes care of every member of the family. There’s a small play area for young children and an outside section that accommodates dogs on a leash and offers them a bowl of water.

Bootlegger Coffee Company  (Bantry Bay, Kenilworth, Sea Point)

This popular coffee spot serves up delicious breakfasts and lunches in an ultra-cool setting. Dog-walkers frequent the buzzing restaurants on weekends, where they welcome your four-legged friends indoors. The pups are also given a bowl of fresh water.

Burger & Lobster (City Bowl)

You can still cure your burger or Maine lobster-roll cravings with the dogs in tow at this city bowl spot. Keep them on a lead and perch at one of the sidewalk tables to enjoy the sun.

Café Paradiso (Gardens)

This popular Kloof Street restaurant has a charming garden and a courtyard, where four-legged friends are welcomed and given water bowls to keep them refreshed. The garden area does close when there are high winds or rain, however, so be sure to keep your eye on the weather.

Café Roux (Noordhoek)

Let your dog join you for the no-frills but delicious fare at Café Roux. Sit outside with your well-behaved pup roaming freely or, if they’re the chaos-creating type, make sure they’re on a leash. Bowls of water are available for them while you enjoy pizza or freshly baked sweet treats.

Chardonnay Deli (Constantia)

Take the family and your canine friends to this upmarket farm stall and deli. Pets are allowed outside and are given bowls of water to lap up while their owners enjoy the likes of French toast with fried banana and bacon; grilled croissants with rosemary, ham, brie and hummus; and homemade lasagne, quiches and charcuterie.

Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room (City Bowl)

This lively diner on Bree Street is busy all day and becomes a local meeting spot for drinks and cocktails at night. The Clarke’s team loves dogs, but they do ask that all pups are kept on a leash so as not to disturb other dining customers.

Company’s Garden (City Bowl)

This spot is popular with families and you can take your fur-child with you. Sit outside under the lush trees with your dog by your side and enjoy the modern South African fare that includes generous sharing platters, serious salads and hearty toasted sandwiches.

The Dark Horse (Gardens)

Sit alongside bustling kloof street as you enjoy fancy bar nibbles and great cocktails all with the company of your fur babies! Bring your dogs along and join for a relaxing afternoon sundowner session.

Die Damhuis (Melkbosstrand)

This beach restaurant is welcoming to all doggos. They even have a dog-friendly menu with meatballs, sirloin with or without a bone, and Cool Dogs ice cream.

Dunes Restaurant & Bar (Hout Bay)

Keep your pet on a leash and they’re more than welcome here. Take in the awesome view with them as you sit outside in the terrace area. Buckets of water are provided for your pet as you indulge in the seafood offering.

Eagle’s Nest (Constantia)

Make your Sunday session a fur-family affair by taking them along to Eagle’s Nest. Spread out on the grassy lawns with a glass of their tasty wine and snack on a large cheese and charcuterie platter, all while your pup has the time of their life running around.

The Foodbarn and The Foodbarn Deli and Tapas (Noordhoek)

The Foodbarn – which offers fine dining in a laid-back country-style setting – as well as its deli and tapas restaurant, welcome furry friends with bowls of water to keep the tails wagging. There’s also a great patch of grass where your pet can roll around and socialise with other dogs.

Foresters Arms (Newlands)

All four-legged animals are welcomed here with bowls of water. Your pets can happily lounge in the tree-covered backyard area while you tuck into the popular pizzas and ice-cold draughts. Please note that patrons with dogs will be seated in the smoking area only, as per the restaurant’s rules.

Jason Bakery (Green Point)

Bring along your pups when you score your Saturday-morning doughssant from this buzzing spot. Dogs are allowed inside and outside as long as they’re well behaved.

Jonkershuis (Constantia)

This family-friendly spot extends to include your much-loved (and leashed) dogs in the outside area only, where they will be served water.

Kleinsky’s Delicatessen (Sea Point)

This trendy delicatessen offers a taste of New York City in the heart of Sea Point, with delicious breakfast and lunch menus. We’ve been told the hot pastrami on rye is a locals favourite. Dogs are welcome and water bowls are available on request.

La Belle Café (Constantia and Camps Bay)

Dogs are allowed to rest in the outdoor area, where they’ll be given a bowl of water to drink while guests enjoy baked treats and coffee. The Camps Bay branch welcomes dogs, too.

La Parada (Constantia Nek)

Take advantage of sunny weather and pick a table on the large outside veranda, where your furry friends are allowed to rest on a leash. Bowls of fresh water are also replenished for thirsty pups.

Leopard Bar at 12 Apostles (Camps Bay)

This grand five-star hotel offers guests the chance to bring along their dogs (which should be under knee height) for a luxurious getaway filled with plenty of pampering. Unfortunately (with the exception of guide dogs), no pets are allowed in the Azure Restaurant during meal times, but small pooches are welcome in The Café Grill and Leopard Bar, where they’re offered their own delectable menu. The Bark-a-Licious offering for small dogs includes beef fillet steak with boiled potato wedges and gravy; and ostrich mince with cooked oats, flax seeds, fresh apple and dried cranberries. The Purrfect Choice menu for cats features delicacies such as salmon trout with scrambled eggs; and poached chicken breast with flaxseeds, potato, garden peas and chicken comsommé.

Maria’s (Gardens)

Dogs roam freely at this sunny Dunkley Square eatery. Bring along well-behaved furry friends and sit outside under the trees while you tuck into the hearty Greek cuisine. (We highly recommend the veg platter for two.) Dogs are given bowls of water to drink and sometimes even a meaty lamb bone to keep them occupied. Sociable dogs are also welcome to sit inside.

Massimo’s (Hout Bay)

Massimo is known for being a lover of dogs, with his beautiful Border Collie named Luna often making an appearance at the restaurant. Diners are welcome to bring their own friendly pooches to sit outside while enjoying the legendary pizzas. Smaller well-behaved dogs are allowed inside on certain occasions and all pups will be given a bowl of water.

Olympia Cafe and Deli (Kalk Bay)

This quirky popular café is located in the heart of Kalk Bay, where crowds walk up and down the street, enjoying the interesting shops and restaurants on offer. Check out the bakery section to find something to enjoy with your coffee if you’re not staying for a meal. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re well behaved and controlled. Bowls of water are served on request.

Ons Huisie (Bloubergstrand)

A popular sunny spot known for relaxed South African pub fare, Ons Huisie is welcoming to all kinds of dogs in the outdoor seating area. Grassy patches, a beach and a doggie-only drinking fountain will make them feel right at home.

Rhodes Memorial Restaurant (Newlands)

With sweeping views, this tranquil family-friendly restaurant is the ideal weekend spot. Take your dog for a stroll on a mountain trail before settling down to a wrap, sandwich, salad, or tempting tea-time treat. Pets are offered a bowl of water to quench their thirst.

Simon’s at Groot Constantia (Constantia)

You and your pet are spoiled for choice here at Simon’s, where there are several areas available for you to sit outside – close to the vineyards and fields – with your pet or, in the case of the deli section, inside. There are many doggy bowls on the property for the drinking pleasure of your well-behaved pets. Simon’s is also looking into starting a menu for dogs.

Society Bistro (Gardens)

This popular bistro is located inside a restored Georgian-style home in the City Bowl. The menu changes seasonally. Dogs are very welcome but only in the outside seating area, so check the weather and availability of tables before heading on over. Water bowls are available on request.

Sotano (Mouille Point)

Situated directly in front of the dog-friendly grassy patch of the promenade, this easy-going Mediterranean eatery will gladly offer your canine a bowl of water and a shady spot to relax when you’re seated outside. You can look forward to lamb burgers, seafood pastas, tapas and sushi, as well as leisurely sundowners.
