Friday takeaways: Where to get amazing burgers across South Africa this weekend

We love burgers of all shapes and sizes! Here’s where to find delicious “burgers near me”.

For when you want healthy: Kauai (Countrywide)

Known for their healthy and flavour-packed wraps and smoothies, Kauai has just added their Normal Burger to their offering. It’s a classic burger, but good for you – free from all added sugars, GMOs, hormones, preservatives, flavourants, colourants, stabilisers and flour improvers. The juicy 100% SA Angus beef patty packs a huge flavour kick – seasoned and grilled to perfection! The fermented bun is made with high-quality SA wheat and holds the whole burger together in a hug of warmth and softness. Grab a smoothie on the side, for a burger meal that will leave you glowing.

For when you feel like dressing up: Buns Out (Linden and Rosebank)

Buns Out is the runaway success of renaissance man and burger lover Maps Maponyane. Evenings see this vibrant spot spilling out onto the pavement, while the glamourous Jozi set sit down to some amazing casual food. Order the New Bacon-ings – a juicy 200g beef patty with crispy streaky bacon, smashed avocado and chilli feta spread – and an iced cold beer (or three) to wash it all down. Oh, and don’t forget to take a selfie!

For when you feel like something different: Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room (Cape Town City)

Clarke’s American diner-inspired menu is where Cape Town’s best chefs go for a burger, and once you’ve tasted this indulgent cheeseburger it will be hard to go back to anything else. The flaky butter croissant bun is the real hero here, cradling a grass-fed 210g beef burger patty topped with melty Klein River Havarti cheese and jazzed up with homemade pickles.

For when you want a combo: Ribs & Burgers (Gauteng)

Half the fun of burgers is eating with your hands (wash them first, please!), so why not add everyone’s other favourite hand-food – ribs. Get stuck into a combo meal and enjoy the best of both worlds. With ribs that are cooked low and slow for eight hours, then flame-grilled with their home-made BBQ basting sauce, your first visit won’t be your last!
