Friday takeaways: Where to get great vegan food

For those living the plant-based life, these spots offer up some of the best vegan-friendly takeaways around.

The Kind Kitchen (Woodstock, Cape Town)

This Woodstock-based vegan café and deli serves a seasonal menu of impressive brunch options, smoothies, wraps, tacos, cold-pressed juices, and tasty sugar- and gluten-free desserts. Think melt-in-your-mouth peanut butter pies and lip-smacking apple crumble tarts. They serve comfort food at its best – the Philly “cheesesteak” and beer-battered avo taco are rumoured to be incredibly addictive and the calamari burger with king oyster mushrooms marinated in a wakame brine is a winner.

La Coco C (Silver Lakes, Pretoria)

At La Coco C they specifically aim to accommodate vegetarian and vegan requests from breakfast right through to late lunch. The brekkie menu features buckwheat flapjacks topped with roasted pecans, banana and peanut butter or pumpkin flapjacks with fresh fruit and almonds. For lunch, tuck into the Vegan Burger Bowl, a black bean burger with vegan cheddar, roasted butternut, salsa and avocado, served with a baobab mayo and burger bun. There’s also a range of vegan salads and even some vegan nachos if you’re in the mood for a treat.

Lekker Vegan (Gardens, Cape Town & Kyalami, Johannesburg)

This gourmet vegan eatery offers vegan burgers, fries, gatsbys (foot-long baguettes stuffed with savoury fillings), snacks and soft serve. Lekker Vegan serves all the best junk food, while remaining plant-based. Don’t miss the crispy burger with “cheese”, tomato, “bacon” and their secret Lekker sauce with crispy onions, as well as the nacho bowl and a chocolate cheesecake. They’re also offering an option to order straight from their website and they’ll personally deliver or you can do a contactless pick up outside the restaurant.

Lexi’s Eatery (Sandton, Modderfontein, Rosebank, Hazelwood)

The menu here features very little to no animal products, as well as no refined sugars or products containing gluten. For breakfast, order the Farmer’s Breakfast Bowl with tofu scramble, grilled mushrooms, roasted potatoes, grilled tomatoes and fresh avo with a vegan hollandaise. Or go for the gluten-free vanilla power waffles with berries, coconut cream and vegan Nutella. Come lunch and dinner, the dishes take on a more gourmet slant. Nibbles such as beetroot falafel, carrot hummus and crudités are a great bite before some of the main events, which include a black rice porcini risotto with basil, green peas, zucchini and a broccoli mousse and a green lasagne with a medley of green veggies in a green sauce, between layers of pasta sheets and cashew bechamel topped with vegan cheese.

Oh My Soul (Durban North, Durban)

This 100% vegan eatery caters for everyone who is vegan or trying to become more plant-based or health-conscious, or who is just curious to try a delicious cruelty-free option. The menu boasts dishes like smoothie bowls, vegan cheese toasties, veggie bowls, loaded sweet potatoes and the signature vegan burgers. The latter comes in options such as the chickpea and beet burger, Mexican-style burger with smashed avo, and hot green chilli and garlic burger with chilli mayo. End with a gourmet shake or one of the toppling vegan waffles.
