Where to get the crispiest chips in South Africa

Brought to you by McCain SureCrisp

The Chief of Chips, Catharina Bester, from McCain said it best: the perfect chip is golden and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. (If you want to know more about the science behind the new McCain SureCrisp chips, watch this video.) But where to find such golden deliciousness? We put the call out on social media and here’s what you had to say.

1. McDonald’s

The American franchise that has been a South African staple for decades came out on top. And no wonder – their “fries” are always golden and crispy. Best enjoyed piping hot before you even look at your burger, they also offer a lovely salty kick and are perfect when dipped into tomato sauce (or even ice cream – trust us!).

2. Steers

Coming in at number two is a local favourite. They’re known for flame-grilled burgers, chicken and ribs – all of which are best when accompanied by Steers hand-cut chips. Golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside, they have just the right amount of salt and grease to satisfy all your fast-food cravings.

3. Burger King

Battlelines are always drawn when chip fans are asked which is best: Burger King or McDonald’s? The latter offers crispy, thin, American-style fries, while Burger King’s full-on potato chips are more familiar in size and texture. Their chips meet the brief of being soft and fluffy on the inside and pair well with tomato sauce, mayo or sweet chilli sauce.

Best of the rest

While McDonald’s, Steers and Burger King may have taken the top spots, any true chip aficionado will want to try them all, so here’s the full list for you to work your way through.
