Where to go for inspired brunches in Cape Town

The Mother City is showcasing the trendiest meal of the day with some pretty glorious brunch choices. Here’s where to go for your next mid-morning feast.

Between Us (Cape Town)

The menu at Between Us offers a diverse selection of brunch options. The porridge option from the ‘Grains’ section of the menu comes with a variety of unique and delicious toppings. Try the porridge with cashew butter, honeycomb and stone fruit compote; or rhubarb caraway compote, Kültüre yoghurt, activated granola and a sprig of chervil. Another popular choice worth trying is the activated granola with orange and lemon thyme, dehydrated apple crisps, grapefruit curd.

Bistro Sixteen82 (Tokai)

Enjoy a pre-wine-tasting brunch at this popular spot. Kick things off with a few Saldanha Bay oysters before moving onto breakfast dishes like mushrooms on a rosti with gorgonzola cream, beef ragout with poached eggs or the always-popular eggs Benedict with 1682 bacon, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce.

Bootlegger Coffee Company (Bakoven, Cape Quarter, Kalk Bay, Kenilworth, MuizenbergSea Point and Tokai)

Weekend breakfasts are served until 12.15pm for those wanting a lie-in. Expect the likes of DIY breakfasts, scrambowls, healthy chia seed bowls or creamy porridges, plus some buttermilk flapjacks with powdered sugar and maple bacon. If it’s omelettes you’re after, the green version with avo, goat’s cheese, baby spinach, peas, pesto and spring onion is a hit. Wash it down with one of the coffees, a superfood latte, fresh juices or even something boozy.

Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room (City Bowl)

This spot offers American-style brunches at their best. It’s comfort food with serious flavour. Start with a fruity portion of grapefruit brûlée with ginger sugar before moving onto the main events. Eggy options include the ever-popular hash eggs with toasted cauliflower, parmentier potatoes, peppers and spring onion with two poached eggs, asparagus, hollandaise and pea shoots, or the spicy huevos rancheros with organic black beans, smoked tomatoes, two fried eggs and house-made queso fresco. Wash it down with the famous Bloody Mary or a coffee by Deluxe. Late-risers can also enjoy their breakfast and brunch treats all day.

Clay Café (Hout Bay)

Those with little ones will love this easy-going spot that offers fun clay-painting activities and a playground for the kiddies. Mid-morning dishes include classic egg favourites like the Benedict or creamy scrambles on a croissant. There’s also smashed avo with chilli, mint, bacon and feta with poached eggs, or light home-baked granola (that’s both wheat- and gluten-free) with fruit and yoghurt.

Four & Twenty (Wynberg)

This busy spot is hugely popular with the brunching crowd. The all-day breakfast menu features playful dishes like granola with white chocolate and mixed nuts; a sweet breakfast ‘hot dog’ with a caramelised banana in a honey-butter croissant; green eggs and ham with basil hollandaise; and the popular eggs Be-Lean with an aubergine-and-mushroom rösti and yoghurt hollandaise. Pair it all with one of the bubbles on offer, some mimosas or some sparkling raspberry-and-thyme spritzers.

Hail Pizza (City Bowl)

Take advantage of the bottomless mimosas for R150 on Saturdays and Sundays, and pair it with your brunch food of choice. The breakfast options are served until 4pm and include options like seasonal fruit with double thick yoghurt, croissants filled with buttermilk ricotta or Nutella; kimchi fried brown rice with poached or fried eggs; and fire eggs baked with a tomato and chickpea stew. There’s also a section dedicated to things on toast, and Clarke’s famed granola also makes an appearance.

Hemelhuijs (City Bowl)

This inner-city breakfast hotspot serves stunning breakfasts all day long. Enjoy simple salted butter on toast with preserves to start, before moving on to dishes like baked guavas with double-cream yoghurt, poached farm eggs with artichoke hearts or soft scrambled eggs with home-baked date loaf. There’s also French toast with salted caramel for something even more decadent. To drink, sip on interesting creations like kumquat-infused vodka with freshly pressed orange juice, or a quince Bellini with prosecco. The freshly crafted juices like ruby grapefruit and navel orange will also quench your thirst. If you’re wanting something warm and comforting, sip on Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk or a matcha latte.

Jarryds (City Bowl and Sea Point)

This popular Sea Point espresso bar is a hit when it comes to lingering brunches. Breakfasts are served all day and feature the likes of health-packed smoothie or granola bowls and eggy delights in the form of Benedicts, scrambles and omelettes. If you’re after something sweet, look out for the banana-bread waffles with butterscotch, brûléed banana and peanut-brittle ice cream.

The Jason Bakery (Green Point)

The menu at The Jason Bakery is separated into four sections according to the times served, with two of those options including breakfast and brunch options. The morning section of the menu comprises toast and breakfast options that are served from 7am to 12pm. The toast served on sourdough includes the avo smash with a soft-boiled egg, avo, coriander and chilli flakes. The breakfast option includes the usual breakfast favourites such as scrambled and poached eggs with roasted rosa tomatoes and wild rocket on either sourdough bread or croissant; or the shakshuka with two baked eggs, coriander, local parmesan and toast soldiers covered in cumin butter. The selection of sandwiches and toasties from the mid-morning section of the menu also offers great options for brunch.

Kleinsky’s (Sea Point)

This buzzing deli is a quintessential New York-style spot with queues spilling onto the pavement on weekends. The brunch offerings include all the favourites: home-baked bagels and schmears, potato hash and eggs, challah French toast and creamy scrambled eggs with salmon and spring onion. The latke Benedict is a top choice, made with two perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and a choice of pastrami, salmon or lamb bacon. Wash this all down with the Bloody Mary Elixir with pickle brine and horseradish. There are also freshly squeezed juices and good coffee.

La Parada (City Bowl and Constantia Nek?

The breakfast menu at La Parada is divided into four sections: breakfast grains, all kinds of eggs, breakfast on bread and indulgence – with each section consisting of a combination of gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, vegetarian, vegan and carb-conscious options. The breakfast grains includes melktert sago pudding, creamy rooibos and cinnamon oats, and coconut chia pudding. The egg selection has frittata, crispy jamón Benedict, salmon trout with cauliflower purée, creamy savoury polenta bowl and breakfast fry-up. Breakfast on bread consists of avo on toast and saffron egg on bean purée. The indulgence section is a sweet selection of banana bread flapjacks, s’mores French toast and croissants.

Loading Bay (De Waterkant)

Hidden up a side street in De Waterkant is this incredibly hip brunch spot. Morning feasts might include options like hotcakes with seasonal berries and mascarpone; health bowls filled with oats and buffalo yoghurt; killer egg options like the breakfast roll with fried egg and boerenkaas cheese; or a comforting option of wilted spinach and pesto with mushrooms on sourdough, topped with crispy onions and a poached egg. Pro tip: order a side of truffle fries and you won’t be sorry.

Mulberry & Prince (City Bowl)

This stylish New York-style restaurant recently added Sunday brunches to its repertoire. Look forward to an American-style feast filled with bubbles, bloody Marys and dishes like biscuits and gravy, chicken waffles, shrimp and grits, and buttermilk pancakes with whipped honey butter.

Open Door (Constantia)

Families flock here for long lazy brunches on the outdoor deck. Let the kiddies play on the jungle gym while you tuck into eggy breakfasts such as the Green Belt breakfast with poached eggs, spinach, mushrooms, avo and a walnut-and-rocket pesto, or sweeter bites like the almond-crusted French toast sandwich with orange marmalade, boerenkaas and sour cream. Book a wine tasting afterwards, or swing by the pop-up wine shop for some weekend wine on your way out.

The Pot Luck Club (Woodstock)

On Sundays, this stylish tapas-style restaurant transforms into a humming brunch spot. The set menu is made up of a collection of Pot Luck favourites served on platters to share with the table. Begin with your DIY Bloody Mary before moving on to dishes like mini Arnold Bennetts, burrata with braaied pumpkin, The Pot Luck Club fish tacos, arancini, peri-peri chicken and an ending of burnt-vanilla churros with dolce de leche. Brunches are served on Sundays only from 11am and cost R450 per person, and an additional R200 for bottomless bubbles and DIY Bloody Marys.

The Raptor Room (Zonnebloem) ?

This fun eatery offers a quirky range of comforting brunch-time eats. Think dishes like Ouma Jean’s flapjacks with banana and berries and a buchu ice cream; Benedict bagels with bacon, eggs and house-made hollandaise; or banana French toast with granadilla curd. Sip on some coffee with beans by Flat Mountain Coffee Roasters or enjoy one of the glorious floats like the Beyoncé, with sparkling watermelon juice and vanilla ice cream.

Solo Restaurant (City Bowl) ?

This stylish gallery restaurant offers a brunch menu filled with sweet and savoury options including waffles, fruit bowls, eggy dishes and smoothies. Tuck into a bowl of shakshuka with cumin-spiced tomatoes, or enjoy a decadent veggie option of mushrooms on toast with herbed crème fraîche and goat’s cheese. Eggs Benedict options will tempt, with variations topped with crispy bacon and fennel hollandaise, creamed mushrooms and sumac kale or Franschhoek trout with crispy capers.

Swan Cafe (City Bowl)

The menu at this crêperie is split into two sections: savoury galettes and sweet crêpes, each of which is divided into a selection of classic and speciality toppings. The classic selection of the savoury galettes includes breakfast options of streaky bacon, roasted baby tomatoes, mushrooms, a cheese duo and a free range egg. The Swan speciality galettes include the Biquette with goat’s cheese, caramelised apple, toasted walnuts, West Coast wild honey and fresh thyme. The selection of the sweet crêpes includes cinnamon sugar, classic Nutella, homemade salted caramel, and homemade lemon curd with fresh thyme. The speciality crêpes includes a combination of fillings such as the mouthwatering Tantalising Tom with red wine poached pears, dark chocolate ganache and candied walnuts.
