Green Point’s new neighbourhood brunch spot, Cushty – reviewed

The Atlantic Seaboard has no shortage of eateries, and Green Point in particular offers some pretty decent breakfast and lunch spots along its busy Somerset strip. But, if you’re looking for some respite from the hustle and bustle of the main roads, check out Cushty, the new neighbourhood gem hidden on the quiet corner of St George Road.

Fast facts

Serves: Wholesome breakfasts, harvest-style lunches and deli eats
Best for: A weekend breakfast or lunch with the family
Average main meal: Main meals range from R65 to R95
Star ratings: Food 4, Ambience 3, Service 4

Food

The daytime deli has no airs and graces about it. It’s fuss-free, homely and reminiscent of your favourite coffee spot in the ‘burbs. The small chalkboard menu means things are kept seasonal and ranges from healthy to hearty.

Breakfast options include light homemade granola with seasonal fruits and Greek yoghurt from Gay’s Dairy; a veg-friendly pesto; and cherry tomato toast with mushrooms, rocket, feta and pecans. If you’re an eggs Benny fan, you can’t go wrong here. The classic breakfast features two perfectly poached eggs from Usana farm with spinach, a glossy Hollandaise and Son of a Butcher bacon all atop two toasted English muffins. If you’d prefer toast, you’ll be looked after with slices from Woodstock Bakery (also available to take home).

Come lunchtime, the deli counter is filled with salads and sides as well as a couple of protein dishes of the day. Expect options like pork sausages, free-range chicken or lamb kebabs, and chicken phyllo pies. Pair with the colourful veg platters, featuring dishes like beetroot-and- quinoa salad, and roast Mediterranean veggies. Or go for pasta dishes like Aglio spinach and ricotta ravioli with crumbled feta.

For something sweet, grab a gluten-free brownie or chocolate croissant on your way out.

Drinks

Coffee is by the Portland Project and comes strong and skilfully made. There are also superfood smoothies, boosters and fresh juices featuring the likes of kale and apple, beetroot and pear, and orange, pineapple and ginger. A babychino or Cocoafair hot choccie will keep the little ones happy.

Service

It gets busy on weekends, but the small friendly team seems to have things under control.

Ambience

Cushty is suburban and homey with worn wooden tables and chairs. Expect to see chalkboard menus and shelves of colourful fruits and veggies. The tables outside seem to be hot property on warm days.

And…

The deli shelves are stocked with everything from Usana eggs and dairy products from Gay’s Dairy to sauces and relishes from The Cooksister and pastas from Aglio.
