Road-tripping foodies who find themselves on the long slog of the N3 highway will soon have an exciting new pit stop that’s promising to be KZN’s newest culinary destination.

The Midlands Kitchen, found at the turn-off for Nottingham Road (Exit 132), is a new addition to the Midlands Meander, with 15 different kitchens that will serve a multitude of different cuisines and eats. Using a market-style concept, the new destination will offer Mexican, Mediterranean and Indian food, burgers, pies, vegan treats, baked goods, a harvest table, wood-fired pizzas, gelato and much more. Visitors can look forward to relaxed, communal, farm-style dining whilst enjoying views of the countryside.

The new venture is set to launch on 18 July, with menus developed by chef Terrence Ford of neighbouring Brahman Hills, who has taken on the role of culinary general manager. All restaurants in the venue will be using fresh produce that is either grown on site or sourced from the local farmers in the area.

“The idea is to create an artisanal eating experience based around really good food, using high-quality ingredients in dishes that are produced with speed,” says Gill Bowmaker, the business brains behind The Midlands Kitchen, alongside owners Iain and Carol Buchan.

“We are trying to keep it simple. You might get eight options on the menu, but they’ll be eight difficult decisions; and, with choices from each of 15 kitchens, that’s a wide array of flavours.”

The Midlands Kitchen has been specially built for easy access off the N3 freeway and will be open from 6am to 4pm daily. The grab-and-go section will stay open until 8pm, and will be complemented by a dog-friendly picnic area. The dining area will seat about 400 people, including space for 120 in an area served by waitrons for those who want to make their meal more of an occasion.
