The brand-new hot spots in Joburg

The world may have been on a go-slow this year, but some restaurateurs and chefs have been busy despite it all. As we start venturing out of our houses this spring, here are some new and revamped Joburg restaurants to add to your list.

L’atelier Bakery (21 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank)

Do you have a sweet tooth? L’atelier has you sorted. This French-style delicatessen and café serves gorgeous baked treats, filled baguettes, eggs Benedict, quiches, pain au chocolat and serious croissants. And we say “serious” because they don’t cut corners when it comes to viennoiserie: imported French butter and only the best flour are used during the three-day croissant process. Notable, too, is their Paris Brest: a choux bun filled with milk chocolate and hazelnut praline ganache. And, if you’re after a little bit of everything, opt for their exquisite high tea (booking ahead is preferable). R200 per person gives you a three-tiered cake stand burgeoning with delights.

Open Mondays to Saturdays, 9am to 4pm.

La Parada (Parkhurst Square)

Best known in Cape Town for its great tapas and awesome vibe, La Parada is the newest addition to the Parkhurst strip. The décor is sizzling and so is the menu: opt for an eclectic mix of tapas including deep-fried miso aubergine, seared tuna tataki with avo mousse and a lemongrass dressing, and seriously sticky paprika-and-orange-glazed short ribs. There’s also a range of tantalising salads and mains on offer, including a Wagyu beef burger on an artisanal brioche bun topped with mature cheddar, mustard seed aïoli and roasted red pepper chutney.

La Stalla Deli (Corner of 7th & 4th Avenue, Parktown North)

Just down from Il Contadino, chef James Diack has created an oasis of free-range, organic, hormone-free products. Everything comes from his Brightside family farm in Magaliesburg, where the animals roam and the veggies grow pesticide-free. You’ll find rotisserie chickens and fantastic eggs, cheeses, sausages, pasta sauces, salad greens and seasonal veg, as well as a host of homemade preserves, pickles, cordials, jams and jellies. Plus there’s a wonderful hotdog stand and casual seating area, so you can get a scrumptious free-range hotdog with all the trimmings for the perfect lunch on the go!

Open Tuesdays to Saturdays 8am to 5pm and Sundays 8am to 3pm

Hallmark House (Maboneng)

Celebrity chef Katlego Mlambo (the 2019 Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star) is the hottest name on the Joburg food scene. He’s also the guy behind Joburg’s live-jazz fine-dining masterpiece, The Marabi Club. And guess what? Hallmark House (home to The Marabi Club) recently opened a rooftop venue, too! The views across Joburg are unbeatable and the offerings are absolutely tantalising: Thursdays to Sundays you can get an array of mains for just R150, including a kimchi prawn salad, 1kg of BBQ or chilli chicken wings, or even a 400g sirloin with a beef jus, crispy wedges and chimichurri sauce. Follow Hallmark House’s Instagram to stay up to date with events. Booking is essential.

Pablo, The Mint Hotel (84 Katherine Street, Sandton)

They closed their doors in Melville, but this shakshuka haven has found a new and even more stylish home in the centre of Sandton: The Mint Hotel. The menu is now divided into the breakfast/brunch of Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar and a petite lunch/early dinner menu comprising primarily signature dishes from their guesthouse restaurant, Dos Manos. Think mezze and small plates, wood-fired pizzas and Middle Eastern-inspired tacos, as well as delicious wood-fired grills.

Open Wednesdays to Mondays from 7am to 8.30pm

Sweet Tea and Chickadee (3 Levubu Road, Emmarentia)

This Southern American-style bakery and café specialises in sweet and savoury American-style “biscuits” – what we call scones. The pulled pork and apple jalapeño slaw biscuit sandwiches – served with four different homemade BBQ sauces – and the crispy fried chicken and pickle biscuit sandwiches are top-notch. Plus they have the best key lime, pumpkin and apple pies – all homemade with love and lots of butter.

Open Wednesdays to Sundays from 8am to 5pm
