On Sunday 7 August 2016, on the border of Parkhurst and Greenside, the brand-new Jozi Real Food Vegan Market will appear for the first time.

You might recognise the location – it’s where the Jozi Real Food Market takes place every Saturday. The organisers have seen increasing interest in a vegan market over the last eight years. It reached fever pitch last year, says Ingrid Goncalves, when they were inundated with requests from both the shoppers and suppliers. “People have now become more aware of the impact of consuming meat for our planet’s sake, but it’s also about the cruelty of farming methods used today,” she explains.

To begin with, the vegan market will be held on the first Sunday of every month. Vegan shoppers can look forward to finding vegan ice creams, ready-made cuisines, sauces, cheeses and yoghurts, superfoods, bars and mueslis, real raw juices, health supplements, coffees, preserves, jams and good pickles. There will also be arts and crafts, clothing and jewellery, plus entertainment for the children. It’s dog friendly, too.

Among the traders will be Antonia’s products from Leafy Greens Café, Lucy’s Fruits & Veg, The Chocolate Tree, Blue Skies fresh fruit and juices, Whisked Away, Rubi Roastery & Coffee Bar, Primo Delizia, Big Mama’s Deli and more.

The first vegan market this Sunday will also be part of the run-up to Women’s Day, so live music, art installations and vegan cocktails will match the theme. Visit the new Jozi Real Food Vegan Market from 9am to 3pm this Sunday at Pirates Sports Club, Braeside Road.
